To hold my nose and vote for Hillary should it have turned out she was our nominee.

3. They're here
they're just not doing anything other than press conferences and meeting with elected officials.

You don't expect them to get their shoes dirty do you?

The National Guard is doing an awesome job along with all the Iowa citizens. This state is an incredible community.

4. When you say "They're here" is it more than one or two people
who were just sent by Chertoff for PR reasons, or are there really organizing things and providing some help?

Someone on another thread said CNN had announced that Chertoff sent one rep. to Iowa to walk around and report back to him. Looks like we have a real Brownie still in place!

8. Here in Cedar Falls there is a FEMA and an SBA meeting room right across the street from the
Red Cross shelter on the UNI Campus.

I saw two men in FEMA hats walking around downtown Waterloo yesterday.

23. Actually the majority of downtown Waterloo flooded - banks, courthouse, jail and many businesses
were flooded AND several blocks of homes flooded as well as the railroad bridge swept away. FEMA is needed in Waterloo. We're just lucky that it didn't get hit as bad as Cedar Rapids.

www.kwwl.com <- link to Waterloo's tv station, in downtown Waterloo - had to run for a day outside off of generators because of lack of power.

12. What are they doing in Waterloo? I thought they were OK.
Most of the FEMA people are probably out collecting all the equipment ($85M) they gave away.

I have grandchildren in Cedar Rapids and Marion. Their homes weren't involved, but their places of employment were, so they stayed home and filled sandbags. I was proud of them.

6. Glad that the Guard is helping.
And that your state knows how to pull together. Nothing is better than community.

Sorry for all you are going through.

11. Are you far from there?
I see your profile says you're from Cedar Falls. Is that far from Cedar Rapids?

Maybe you could post some personal stories on the floods.

We'd like to know how everyone in Iowa is faring.

13. We're hangin' in
Here in Iowa City, we have our chins up and are doing our level best. We just had a fifteen minute downpour and hail - we just can't catch a break. Cedar Rapids and Iowa City both have a lot of flood evacuations, neighborhoods underwater, etc. The east side of The University of Iowa campus is a mess. A mess. Downtown Cedar Rapids was/is totally flooded and they have severe water availability problems.

All that said - it's beautiful to see how hard everyone here is working to help everyone else. It's just depressing when the water just keeps winning.

Thanks for asking. It really is helpful to know there are people out there who give a shit.

22. Iowa City's response looks a lot like Cedar Falls' response earlier this week
Real community there. Looks like the campus is going to need some drying out. How about elsewhere?

21. We're a good 50 miles north of Cedar Rapids in rural Cedar Falls
If you want to see some crazy footage of Cedar Rapids flooding go to www.essentialestrogen.com and to www.IowaIndependant.com for statewide stories.

If you can, head over to the Iowa Forum - we're all keeping track of each other over there.

14. When our town flooded last year..........
.....FEMA rolled into town within two days, set up shelters, trucked in food and supplies. I was impressed after the bad press they got from Katrina. Of course, it doesn't hurt that their headquarters are only thirty miles away!

Anyway, I just wanted folks to know that they can/have done things right!

17. Shhh...you'll ruin a lot of self-righteous indignation
I'm amused at all the high-n-dry keyboard warriors screaming bloody murder for FEMA's head. I have close relatives in
IA - I'm told that FEMA is there and resources are available. They blew it for Katrina, no doubt - doesn't mean they're blowing
it in IA.
