The best replacement for Russert would be Bill Moyers.
There is little chance of that happening, however Bill Moyers is in my opinion the best interviewer on TV. Outside of that I like Chuck Todd and David Gregory, however they don't have a lot of pinache. The other good choice would be Keith Olbermann although I think he'd have to tone the theatrics down a bit and be equally exhaustive in challenging all sides.

I have a feeling they are going to pick someone who is non-controversial and probably boring, which will effectively kill the show but at least they won't offend the status quo and monied interests that big pharma, big agribusiness, big defense contractors, and big oil advertise to on that show.

1. My other choice would be David Brancacci
Moyers would be my first choice but I don't think he'd do it. That's why I suggested David Brancacci in another thread.

3. Absolutely.
He would be ideal; hence, it is unlikely to happen.

4. Bill Moyers is a REAL Journalist -- he hasn't a chance
You know there is all sorts of sucking up going on, when the various talking heads aren't sobbing dramatically on camera about the loss of Russert.

They will probably go with Gregory. He's had lots of training as a press poodle for the WH. He'll jump through the right hoops, and kiss the right amount of ass for GE MSNBC.

After all, they OWE him for his work in the WH Press Corps. :sarcasm:

15. War profiteering corporate interests would never allow Moyers such a position
Edited on Sun Jun-15-08 08:40 AM by Echo In Light
Why would they want to sabotage their own interests?

5. Nothing would be more painful than watching the slow destruction of Bill Moyers by GE
The people running MTP don't have the slightest interest in journalistic integrity.

6. It will be interesting
I think Bill Moyers might take it temporarily, just through the election season, but I don't see him signing on permanently. He just turned 74. I love his show on PBS, but the schedule can't be as demanding as a weekly broadcast on national TV. If Moyers filled in, it would give NBC time to decide who the next full time moderator will be, and try different people out as interviewers in the interim.

I'm not sure Keith Olbermann would take the job. He's have to "tone down" too much. I just hope they don't pick Chris Matthews, although he is certainly higher profile than Chuck Todd or David Gregory.

11. My worst nightmare would be for them to persuade Tom Brokaw to get
Off his perpetual book writing, book signing parade and back on the tube.

But if he was busy with Meet the Press, maybe he wouldn't have time to redefine every cultural phenomenon that's ever happened in America (Sources tell me he's just gotten an advance for his newest title: "My life as a Gen X-er")

12. I think Rachel Maddow would be perfect.

she's new on the scene, but better and smarter. 2 traits along with being a Dem that will totally disqualify her.

16. NO chance for Bill Moyers
He pretty much slammed MTP for being a mouthpiece for the Bush Ad. before the war. I wonder if there's any chance Tom Brokow would come out of retirement for the job?

18. Excellent Suggestion
Edited on Sun Jun-15-08 08:52 AM by Phred42
Other choices after Moyers would be:

Olbermann
Rachel Maddow
John Dean
Donoghue
Mike Malloy (ok, you know that would be fun but never gonna happen)
Randi Rhodes (Ok again, ......)

Unfortunately we will probably end up with

Tweety
Tucker
Gregory (David not Dick)
or Glenn Beck.
