Breaking! Darrell Issa to testify along with Carol Lam tomorrow!??
I just saw this subscription story come across the wire a few minutes ago.

Hmm.... I wonder if they're going to go after Issa the way they did Domenici too, since Issa is rumored to be the congressman that complained about Lam's "record on prosecuting illegal immigration and arms smuggling" that lead to her being fired. I wonder if it was more like, "You gotta stop this indictment of my buddy Duncan Hunter! He can't say anything or it will look bad! So do me this favor and don't let him get nailed before the election!"

Anyone have another article or a subscription to this rag so we can get the full story on this?

Anyone know what CSPAN channel these hearings might be on tomorrow AM? It might get VERY interesting!

1. Issa was a Lam critic.
He may be catapulting the propaganda, or he may be trying to play nice to prevent being the next Domenici/Wilson. Ooh, pass the popcorn!

This looks to be where the Republicans will derive their talking points to help them focus on defending themselves, with the following part of this post on his site talking about "the facts" of Carol Lam. He even accuses DiFi of bad mouthing her.

Rep. Issa, Former U.S. Attorney Carol Lam to Testify at Subcommittee Hearing on Removal of Seven U.S. Attorneys

March 5, 2007 - Rep. Darrell Issa (CA-49) will testify at a Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law hearing scheduled for Tuesday at 2 PM on the removal of seven U.S. Attorneys including Carol Lam, the former U.S. District Attorney for the Southern District of California. Carol Lam and other removed U.S. Attorneys will also testify at the hearing.

...

FACTS ABOUT CAROL LAM:

A Department of Justice evaluation of Carol Lam’s office in February 2005 found:

*The number of immigration cases per attorney in Carol Lam’s office was the lowest among the five U.S. Attorneys offices on the Southwest border.

*Carol Lam had made efforts to reduce the number of border cases assigned to the General Crimes trial teams.

*The Border Patrol believed that revisions to the guidelines to for prosecuting alien smugglers would constrict them to an “unacceptably low level” of prosecutable apprehensions.

*A number of law enforcement agencies disagreed with the prosecutorial guidelines thresholds and felt the guidelines thresholds unduly hampered their enforcement efforts.

*There was a perception that the less experienced attorneys assigned to the team that processed all immigration and border cases needed more support and instruction before, during and after court proceedings and during plea negotiations.
In June 2006, California Sen. Dianne Feinstein wrote to U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to express concerns about Carol Lam's performance in office:

in the last Congressional election (11/06).

She has met with him to discuss issues (I never heard the results of that).

I can't stand to watch him either. When it counts, he always does the Administration's bidding (just MY own observation).

He did call to congratulate her on winning the primary in our heavily Rethuglican district, however.

On the other hand, the local newspapers basically consistently declined to print any articles mentioning Jeeni's name, for the most part, during the campaign (my own observation, again). Now, when she plans an activity, they do (after the election)(e.g. the last vigil). Interesting ...

House Democrats eliminating the secret ballot

By: DARRELL ISSA - commentary

House Democrats have voted to deny Americans one of our most precious rights ---- the right to a secret ballot election. With Thursday's passage of the misleadingly named "Employee Free Choice Act," workers will no longer be able to vote privately on whether or not they want to be represented by a union.

The secret ballot is at the core of our democracy. Last November, the Democrats gained the majority in Congress in an election conducted by secret ballot, acknowledged as the fairest way to carry out an election. The freedom and right to hold privately a personal belief, opinion or decision is at the heart of what makes this nation great. Taking away this right and stripping workers of their freedom to choose is unfair.

Proponents of the Employee Free Choice Act, including the Communist Party U.S.A., the AFL-CIO and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (the latter two are major donors to the Democratic Party and to Democratic candidates), argue that it will free workers from employer pressure against organizing a union. They say employees are so intimidated by their employers that they are no longer guaranteed the right to organize. This is simply not true. Union membership in California has remained unchanged over the last eight years. With 2.3 million members, California has the highest union membership in the country.

The Employee Free Choice Act actually makes legal the intimidation tactics used by union organizers. By denying workers their right to a private ballot, and instead forcing a system that uses a non-secret "card-check," workers are left exposed and will be easily identified as not supportive of joining a union. Once identified, these workers are often subjected to coercion, threats and bullying. They are terrorized by union organizers and other employees before, during and after work hours, in both work and non-work areas, and even at their homes, until they agree to join the union.

6. They should call the prosecutors to the stand that didn't adequately investigate HIS ass!
... for the times he was found with his car thief brother in auto theft incidents as a young end before these experiences helped him build his car alarm scanner company (Viper). Or the time when he was working on a computer into the night the night before one of his company's new affiliates burned to the ground in the midwest. I think he knows that a "well paid" and "owned" set of prosecutors is necessary for folks like him to keep themselves out of jail!

14. good editorial on Issa's fingerprints on Lam's back, her firing. local paper
Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 07:16 PM by caligirl
"When a prosecutor goes after powerful, white-collar criminals, power brokers and politicians, such as Duke Cunningham, defense contractor Mitchell Wade and Brent Wilkes ---- a Poway defense contractor believed to be another Cunningham co-conspirator ---- sensitive and powerful nerves are struck in unexpected places higher up. Obviously one nerve leads to Rep. Darrell Issa, for, as the NC Times editorial ( "The one that got away," Feb. 1) stated, "Investigators could easily pick up the fingerprints of Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista, on Lam's back." Something about Lam's investigations was making Issa very uncomfortable. This in itself is reason for further investigation."

The one that got away

By: North County Times Opinion staff -

Our view: U.S. Attorney Carol Lam forced out for favoring big fish like Duke over small fry

Let us now praise Carol Lam.

The U.S. Attorney for San Diego for the last 4 1/2 years announced her resignation Jan. 16 and will leave office Feb. 15. We'll miss the widely praised, quietly effective and thorough prosecutor who rightly concentrated her efforts on big cases. And these were no small fish she bagged.

Among her accomplishments: a guilty plea by Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham in the biggest congressional corruption case in history; a pair of convictions of San Diego City councilmen on extortion, fraud and other charges in a sleazy strip-club bribery scheme; and, sometime this year, her office will begin a death-penalty case against Francisco Javier Arrellano-Felix, the elusive alleged kingpin of a notorious Mexican drug cartel arrested in his yacht off Baja in August.

Sure, she might not have delivered enough gun- or people-smuggling cases to please her bosses in Washington, D.C. ---- that's the official story, anyway. But Lam did dunk Duke, and for that, we are quite grateful.

In a scene few of us will forget, Cunningham pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery and tax evasion on Nov. 28, 2005, in a tearful confession outside of U.S. District Court in San Diego, and resigned from his 50th Congressional District seat. The Navy ace of Vietnam and Top Gun fame admitted to accepting cash bribes and embarrassingly lavish gifts from four unnamed co-conspirators in exchange for helping two defense contractors get federal contracts worth millions of dollars. Cunningham is now serving an eight-year, four-month sentence at a federal work camp outside Tucson, Ariz.

One of Cunningham's co-conspirators, Washington-based defense contractor Mitchell Wade, pleaded guilty last February to bribing Duke with more than $1 million and committing election fraud to line his own pockets. Wade is said to be cooperating with federal investigators and faces more than 10 years in the clink himself.

Next up is Brent Wilkes, a Poway defense contractor believed to be another Cunningham co-conspirator and the target of a federal grand jury for more than a year. Well-placed sources told our William Finn Bennett that an indictment of Wilkes should come any day now; the Wall Street Journal reported last month that Lam is pushing to indict Wilkes before she steps down.

We urge Lam's successor to pick up this investigative thread. We must continue to unravel a knot of corruption that endangered our troops by, at best, compromising what is supposed to be a performance-based defense-contracting process. Of course, we can't call Cunningham's capture Lam's victory alone; the reporting done by Copley News Service's Marcus Stern especially, and, to a lesser extent, our own Bennett and Mark Walker, laid down a roadmap that greatly assisted Lam's prosecution.

Lam's decision to concentrate her office's efforts on white-collar crime, corruption and criminal kingpins necessitated a shift in resources ---- time, money and cases ---- away from the border-related crimes that had dominated the dockets of Lam's predecessors. A Syracuse University analysis found that the number of prosecutions dropped 38 percent between 2001 and 2005.

Her priorities set Lam against the powerful forces, including the Border Patrol union, pushing for tighter enforcement of the nation's border laws. But Lam's office also targeted corrupt Border Patrol agents and border inspectors, and her office caught seven such poor guardians of our southern gates.

*****CSI investigators could easily pick up the fingerprints of Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista, on Lam's back; Issa has campaigned for more than two years against Lam's priorities and failure to pursue prosecutions of "coyote" smugglers.

But just this December, Lam bagged a huge fish in another immigration-related case when the Golden State Fence Co. and two of its top executives pleaded guilty to knowingly hiring illegal immigrants. The Riverside-based fencing giant, which also has an office in Oceanside, agreed to give up $4.7 million to the federal government, and other employers shirking their responsibilities had to take note.

The Bush administration says it will seek Senate confirmation for whomever it selects as Lam's replacement. That's certainly a better choice if the goal is to make this political decapitation more palatable across the aisle. The administration slipped a provision into last year's reauthorization of the Patriot Act to allow the appointment of U.S. attorneys without the Senate's OK, but using it would cast an unnecessary cloud over the appointee's tenure.

And before she leaves, we thank Carol Lam for her service. If she hadn't done anything other than catch Duke, North County would still owe her a tremendous thank you.

I'm glad she busted Duke Cummingham, but to make a real difference in the quality of life of the average San Diego citizen, putting criminal illegal aliens in jail for long sentences is more important. Every one of those criminals will commit a robbery, burglary, rape or murder every day there are in this country. Protecting the average citizen is JOB 1. Goodbye and good riddens to Carol Lam."

The difference was The Dukester's bribe by the contractor to steer juicy DOD contracts to him by, yes ~ THE DUKESTER. So......all Lam did was sic some of her attorneys on the case...and it went from there. This after huge publicity and a public outcry. Lots of posturing and taking credit by Lam. Meanwhile, whe was neglecting issues of illegal immigration, drug smuggling and such. Her dismissal was appropriate ~ she set her own priorities and was insubordinate in not following those given to her by The Attorney General. 15. Issa history, car theft to congress, perfect gop material.
The Issa family, on the other hand, encouraged a do-for-yourself attitude in its boys, with only one of the Issa brothers going to prison as a result. And it wasn’t Darrell, who’s never been in jail longer than it takes to be booked. Even so, Darrell’s doing-for-himself has attracted the attention of so many police departments and insurance-fraud investigators it can sometimes be confusing to remember which allegation against him you’re dismissing as unimportant. To help, I’ve composed a little song to the tune of "These Are a Few of My Favorite Things":

Arson and car theft and threatenin’ employees,

Suspected, indicted, but never convicted,

Except for that one time involving a gun,

But no shots were fired, so why should I care?

As impressive as Darrell Issa’s do-for-yourself spirit is, I’m not sure he has the discipline to restore order in Sacramento. True, Issa did turn a longtime interest in car theft into a thriving car-alarm business, http://www.ocweekly.com/news/news/total-recall/20797/

2/8/2007 3:48:24 PM

My apology to readers for another letter, but our local congressman, Darrell Issa just will not let his deceit rest. He continues to cast votes against our veterans and for the oil energy moguls.

The Republican led congress should have approved the giant spending bill before Democrats took control in January, but seem to have lost interest, and turned the unfinished bill over to the new congress. This giant multi-billion spending bill was given a quick tweaking by the Pelosi leadership to make badly needed changes, to add healthcare for veterans, notably those wounded in Iraq, by including an extra $3.6 billion. In addition, the Defense Dept. got an additional $1.2 billion to provide healthcare to active-duty personnel, again including Iraq war casualties.

The bill passed within one hour’s time in the House by a lopsided margin of 286-140 last week. So who voted against this bill? Rep. Darrell Issa. Several times in recent years Issa has voted against appropriations for our veterans. We know Issa is against excessive government spending, but it seems unconscionable for a politician to say he supports the troops, but then votes against providing the medical care they need for war injuries. Surely Issa can cut somewhere else - perhaps in the fraudulent war-profiteering contracts of Halliburton.

It is public information (Congress.org) that Issa has accepted several thousand dollars in contribution from Exxon-Mobil, and that he voted in January against rescinding billions of dollars in giveaway leases for oil drillers. We could forgive Issa’s charity toward needy giant Exxon-Mobil. That is, until last Friday, when we learned Exxon-Mobil racked up an all time record profit of $39.5 billion last year.

It seems Issa has a lot more charity for Exxon-Mobil than he does for our wounded soldiers and Marines.

his staffers seem to get rattled too easily by questions about investigations of the GOP, Cunningham, and possible involvement by Duncan Hunter who is a candidate for POTUS. I asked the person in Issa's office if Issa wasn't doing his part to stem the GOP losses in 2008 by squelching criminal investigations in US attorney's office by firing them. He then wanted me to register as an official caller and give my personal info. This rattled him. I smell something foul.
