How much are you spending just to drive to work? We've tabulated the cost of a one-way commute from the suburbs to metropolitan areas nearest them, across the U.S.

To determine daily cost of commute, simply double the cost of the daily commute.

1. I wish my commute were that cheap!
I'm currently spending somewhere in the neighborhood of $85/week to drive to work and back. :(

2. 9 gallons a week for me
Cost this morning:

$3.90 x 9 = $35.10

Thanks Bushco for charging me more to work :sarcasm:

3. I filled up my tank last week when gas was $3.78
It was on a quarter of a tank and I paid $38. I drive about 26 miles round-trip to work. I will have to fill up again on Tuesday and gas is now up to $3.85 to $3.91, which means I will pay about $40 to fill up.

4. We filled up the VW Thursday
because I knew prices would go up Friday. We have a Passat that uses premium gas. Was $3.90, this morning it's $4.159.

Traveling much this weekend?

8. They show the commute as one way
so 2x = to and from work.

10. So, it should read:
"To determine daily cost of commute, simply double the cost of the one-way commute"

6. They forgot parking costs
Which would make your weekly $20 commute more like $70-$100 in most major cities.

These figures don't accurately reflect the real cost of driving as opposed to public commuting in major cities (putting aside issues of maintenance and insurance on an automobile).

Still, with bus/train fares at an average of $2.00 per trip ($20 per week), if parking isn't an issue, the price of gas still isn't high enough to discourage driving.

7. About 25 cents
I drive a 2001 Ford excursion 7.3 Liter Power Stroke (17 miles to a gallon). The biggest SUV they made. Converted it to run on old waste grease (WVO). I get it free from local restaurants.
