I would not even attempt to list the words that are not permitted to be said, let alone the ideas that cannot be expressed. Every word must be guarded lest someone is offended. Be careful if you talk about your beautiful pansies that are blooming. It is difficult to find a politician that has not said or done something "politically incorrect" and is crucified by some DUers. Oops! I shouldn't have said "crucified". Friendly Democrats are exiled to some black hole of "ignore" if they are guilty of committing the sin of disagreeing with the general consensus of DU. There is less and less room for disagreement. God is such an over-whelming responsibility.

1. Donate to "Punch the Admins"
It has to be a tough job. Especially these last several months. I feel the mood here lightening up a bit.

3. I don't think anybody's ruder, cruder and lewder than I am
and DU is one of the few places I don't have to keep a major lid on it.

There are 2 small forums I've left because of the language police, people who will throw a wet blanket on any open forum by quibbling over every unflattering word used to describe some cretin who richly deserves it.

However, as a whole, the board is friendly to all of us who share the same core Democratic values.

That doesn't include the official DU booby hatch, a forum I clicked into oblivion as soon as I could and which will remain nameless. That forum serves as a safety valve for the rest of the site, allowing the overly passionate to blow off steam without scalding the rest of us.

is that they're far too cretinous to realize they're cretins.

4. There are plenty of places
But, on the other hand, the prevailing winds of opinion blow pretty strongly around here, and bucking the prevailing opinion has gotten me into more than one flamewar over the years. My advice to you is to not take it personally. Remember, it's all just ones and zeroes!

7. PC is a bullshit term.
Sorry, but for the past couple of decades it's come to mean whatever the user wants it to mean. It's lost any meaning to me.

If you've got specifics about terminology where people have been unreasonable, then give actual examples, please.

11. It's always been BS. The entire point is to allow crude humor and language and
to put those tha might object to such to be put on the defensive--and often to cause them to not speak out.

17. It also serves to dumb down our needed introspection about language
Edited on Mon May-12-08 11:27 AM by bunkerbuster1
Yes, we can get too wrapped up in terminology, but we do have to talk about it, because words have meaning, and (just to pick my pet example) when we call human beings "illegals" I GET the shorthand, I GET that the people using the term don't necessarily think of these folks as sub-human. But I think such terminology is dehumanizing.

And I should be able to write about the wisdom of such terminology without hearing anyone whine that I'm being too "PC."

19. Exactly. I may despise Frank Luntz with every linguistics-loving
cell in my body, but I have to admire him--he's a master manipulator. You can see his effects in threads like these and others where the terminology seems to drive the opinion, rather than the reverse, which is more natural.

8. "Politically correct" is itself problematic.
Add that to your list.

Yes, there are some words that are not permitted and many more that are discouraged. How hard is it to write the message without derogatory terms once you are aware that the words are offensive to many in your audience?

There are few ideas that can not be expressed, there are many that will be shot down as wrong headed. Your warning that one can't talk about pansies blooming is silly. I suspect that you know full well that the problem arises when the pansy reference is directed at a person. It's not subtle.

It is difficult to find a politician who passes every litmus test and yes, there will always be someone who uses one failure to dismiss the worth of that pol. Such is life.

There is no black hole of ignore for friendly Democrats. There are individual ignore lists. Let's say that each of us has earned a spot on the ignore lists of 20 DUers. I would hazard a guess that few of those ignore lists would include us both. That's the beauty of it. When you can't have a civilized discussion with someone, you can ignore that person and still participate.

10. Sheeesh ... what a bunch of whining ....
YOU are free to say what you wish, and OTHERS are just as free to criticise you for what you say ....

What kind of free ride are you looking for ? ... YOU want to make ANY sort of lame-ass stupid statement and be completely free of ANY criticism whatsoever ? .... How is THAT better ?

What kind of world are you living in ?

Sheeeesh .....

13. That's precisely the machinations of "political correctness."
Anyone can say what they care to say, but if another objects to it, the "PC" term is foisted on them and it puts the victimized on the defensive, not the offender.

15. That is life ....
You say something, someone agrees, someone else disagrees ....

You are NOT free to be completely insulated from the responses of others ....

You have many different parties defined in your statement .... exactly WHO is the 'victim' and WHO is the 'offender' ?

16. DU is the most politically correct place I can find.
but there is no authoritarian control of speech on DU.
as long as you treat other members with respect.
Members are free to use any words, and have their opinions challenged.
Thats one of the reasons for posting.

The old days of politics, like wanting to be politically wrong, with dumbya over a beer, are over.

and ridicule people who didn't care to be insensitive assholes.

Therefore I take it as a compliment.
