162. There was a miscarriage. Some people count that as a child.
Go to http://www.labelledame.com/memorials/guestbook.php...and prepare to go "whoa."

Apparently, JimBob and Michelle got pregnant, had a miscarriage, then visited a "Christian medical practitioner" (that sounds like a witch doctor to me, but what do I know?) who told them the miscarriage was God's punishment for their having used birth control. And not, as it turns out, the end state of between fifteen and thirty percent of all pregnancies. Anyway! The Duggars immediately decided to let God control their fertility, which means that in five more kids and ten more years they'll be able to use standard NFL formations at their touch-football games. Because God, in His infinite wisdom, is using the Duggars to show the rest of us that when He invented the condom He intended for it to be used.

20. Oy my....from their own website:
About The Duggar Family

Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar married July 21st, 1984. At that time, they chose to use the birth control pill. They thought, “We don’t want children right now. We can’t afford them. We want children in our timing, when we’re ready.” Four years later they decided to have their first child. Then, Michelle went back on the pill, but she conceived and had a miscarriage. At that point they talked with a Christian medical doctor and read the fine print in the contraceptives package. They found that while taking the pill you can get pregnant and then miscarry. They were grieved! They were Christians! They were pro-life! They realized that their selfish actions had taken the life of their child. They prayed and asked God to forgive them, and to teach them to love children like He loves children. They asked God to bless them with as many children as He saw fit in His timing. Right after that Michelle got pregnant with twins! To date they have been blessed with 16 children, (10 boys and 6 girls) Joshua, Jana & John-David (twins), Jill, Jessa, Jinger, Joseph, Josiah, Joy-Anna, Jedidiah & Jeremiah (twins), Jason, James, Justin, Jackson, Johannah (& Jennifer due July 28, 2007).

Now, my question...How the hell do they support themselves and all these kids?

when they found out the pill was dangerous, why didn't Mr. Duggar use a condom? That's how MY family kept down the number of kids they had for at least a couple generations back.

22. well, i f they think life starts at conception, I imagine they view
loss of sperm similarly as killing life!

Good heavens.... I want to be tolerant, but as some have pointed out, we are way on our way to destroying the earth with the numbers of humans we have now, so I am very uncomfortable with a family breeding to this extent in this day and age....But, I imagine that they don't care what I think...

who view reproduction related issues so differently than do I. But I would only criticize if they are not self-supporting of all these kids (and it clearly appears that they are fully capable of providing for them)or from the more standpoint of exceeded global carrying capacity. That overpopulation on a global level is causing great sustained harm to the earth and its people-- both current and future-- does call into question whether this is irresponsible to have so many kids--from a societal level... But, this is criticism based on the far wider effects of their reproductive choices, not intolerance, at least in my views.

On the other hand, the far RW IS trying to define life at the conception level (and for some possible even at the egg and spermatozoa level). THIS is dangerous if it informs birth control and other policy and I do not think it intolerant to denounce their views on this issue.

I have no problem with your or anyone else's views on life beginning at conception as long as you don't try to enforce a ban on birth control, women's choice over their own reproductive issues, or other policy that stems from this belief on others. It is You who has made many wrong assumptions, it seems. I have denounced NO ONE.

Something tells me that if all 18 or whatever of them showed up on
TV, half wearing "FUCK GOD" and the other half wearing "FUCK BUSH" t-shirts,
they'd catch an even break here. Maybe.

Geez, they're goofy and sort of creepy, and at at least a few of those kids
will probably have issues later in life, but I can point to MANY 5-, 6-, or 7-person
families that are the same way.

Just asking why you're calling them "human filth." Seriously - so they have a lot of kids, and they have odd
beliefs. There is quite a bit of distance between "defending them," and calling them "human filth." Which child
would have flipped your switch: one? two? three? six? Was the first child just sort of sub-human, and successive
ones were even less worthy of simple human (and Democratic) decency, or were the first two OK, and then became
human filth when numbers 3-17 came around?

175. For the money, always for the money
Edited on Mon May-12-08 05:02 PM by NotGonnaTakeIt
My wife likes that show on TLC "Jon and Kate Plus Eight". The woman had 2 children then sextuplets. I suspect that the real reason these people let cameras in the house is really for the extra money it brings. I sure don't know how I'd pay for 8 kids in this day and age with my job!! I've got one, who's now a 15 year old. We've often thought of having a 2nd, but my wife doesn't work since she's practically disabled with rheumatoid arthritis. I barely make it just providing for my one son.

Putting them on TV and getting paid for it is the modern media equivalent to selling tickets at a circus sideshow to see the freaks.

I'm one of 7; I don't know how my Mom and Dad did it!! And of course, Mom didn't work. Growing up in a large family made me realize that I did not ever want a large family myself. I grew up Catholic; I believe they took the pope's edict on the rhythm method as the only approved form of birth control seriously. I've always said that you could tell the success of the rhythm method by the size of Catholic families!!

I disagree with you on that
however much it is your opinion. I have seen many, many women who don't have the ability to make their own choices. Many of these women are highly intelligent, but the fact is, many women will become embroiled in co-dependent relationships on an emotional level that has no bearing on their intelligence at all. They somehow have put on blinders to the dubious nature of the men in their lives, and will make wrong decisions on that emotional level, and not on a more cerebral level.

Whether Ms. Duggar is an "emancipated" women or not, I doubt if she has the knowledge necessary and the conscience available to really see how much continued pregnancies are not only not in her best interests, but are also raising the level of risk of physical harm to herself.

I know the Duggars are strict in their beliefs, and belong to organizations that are purely part of the religious right, and while they have the resources available to take care of their children, they are also pretty ignorant of some major child welfare considerations. In their family, the older children take care of the younger ones, and that mostly only the male children are home-schooled in the militant religious right fashion. How much the older children have lives of their own is a question in my mind, and the system set up to treat all the female children as nothing but wet-nurses is disturbing. The girls are taught only the "old-fashioned" and "traditional" housewife skills, and are not allowed to gain much of an education beyond that.

Is that right? I don't feel it is. Shit, when I was growing up, I learned how to cook and sew, and other such "home" jobs, but I also learned science, math, english, reading and so much more. I excelled in school and still learn even today to whatever degree I can. I consider it abuse that these kids aren't learning a whole helluva lot being under that roof--the parents are stifling the girls, and keeping up the tradition of male domination and female subservience.

What it boils down to is that this family is just "wrong" and are an abomination of all that families should stand for. Whether they had 7, 10, 14 or 18 children isn't the problem. Making out that the mother is nothing but a baby machine and the father is the Lord God of their household IS the problem. I've seen even larger families in the news through the years, where the parents have become foster or adoptive families, and I see nothing wrong with a family that shows both parents in a positive light. With the Duggars, to me, it's just plain disgusting how fucked up those girl children are going to be, in perpetuating the stereotypical roles of the hypocritical religious right.

We can try to make changes in the way women are being treated right now and in the future, but when girls are treated from birth to be nothing other than brood mares, it's disillusioning at best.

That is monstrous arrogance. Do you also judge millions of Catholics around the world who object to the use of birth control on a religious basis?

Millions of people grew up in families of 10 or more- whether you approve of it or not.

She's a "brood mare" to you. For some strange reason you think she should exchange her values for yours.

To me she is a woman choosing what kind of family she wants to have. I have to right to judge her.

149. Evidently you only gleaned a modicum
of what I wrote.

Quality, not quantity. Children are being abused in the family on very obvious standards. Being homeschooled by people who are members of the radical religious right. The girls never getting any kind of real education. The girls being unwittingly brought up to be ignorant of the world in general. The older girls being raised to take care of their younger siblings. The boys getting away with all kinds of shit.

Male dominance, and female slavery. Is that what you consider a "choice"? These kids are in the same category as the FLDS women, except for the fact that they will never be "rescued." We don't KNOW that their father has not been screwing them, but who cares? The girls are never going to get any knowledge outside of their own family, and you can learn to be a perfect little mother without ever knowing anything about the world.

Arrogance? No, anger. Shock. That while this family is filled with enough shit to sink a battleship, it's difficult to understand why they've never been looked at with enough gravity to have someone suggest they put a stop to their procreating.

But then, I guess McDonald's will still always need employees, and this family could certainly provide them for years to come.

Edited on Fri May-09-08 10:39 AM by Gormy Cuss
The Duggars have the right to have as many children as they can cram in before she loses her fertility, they have the right to raise them in their homebred version of Christianity, they have the right to home school their children with that doctrine and they have the right to parade their family like a sideshow act in order to fund all of the above choices.

That said, since they are holding themselves out as a public example they also should expect to hear criticism of some of those choices, the biggest one being that having two quiverfuls of children is not a sustainable model for the planet.

38. I just found this very lively debate on them on a message board at the Arkansas Times.
http://www.arktimes.com/blogs/arkansasblog/2006/04/the_duggar_plan.aspx

One interesting comment

Jim Bob was reported, by Doug Thompson for the Arkasnsas News Bureau, as claiming to be "...one of those parents who are paying thousands of dollars in property taxes while we teach our children at home, and I'm paying double for my children's education." Compare J.B.'s self-pitying claim to the facts found by clicking on the link to Arkansas property tax records provided by anonymous in his/her post of May 5, 2006. That's at least one lie we've caught J.B. in.

So many people seem to be enamored of the Duggar's supposedly self-sufficient lifestyle. They've turned their home into a church to avoid paying property taxes. They've probably also found loopholes to avoid paying income taxes or making payments to Social Security and will teach their offspring to do likewise. There goes the argument that all these kids are going to help support the system when they become adults. The Duggar's seem to be living off of church charity and fees for posing for photographs and doing interviews after their latest baby is born. They don't have a vegetable patch or fruit orchard or livestock. They produce nothing except more mouths to feed and have whooping monthly food bills. Their food appears to be mostly the cheapest available, which means commercially canned food full of sodium, sugar and corn syrup and sickeningly sweet junk like ice cream bars and chocolate syrup. All in all, I would have to say their lifestyle is hardly a healthy one--either for J.B.'s conscious or their physical health.

She is utterly crazy. Not to mention I was chastised by my doctor for having a baby so soon after the second one, developed gestational diabetes with my second daughter and eventually ended up with flew blown type 2 diabetes six months later. (It was an accident, we did birth control, its not 100% fullproof). Anyways, that woman is slowly killing herself not to mention she has been pregnant like every year for 18 years. Not a good idea. Plus, very irresponisble in today's world with climate change and food shortages and all that.

"Due to the rise in inflation and the rise in the price of food, the Duggar family are going to start eating the kids that aren't pulling their weight.

Because their family is so large, they will start with the older children. They will fill more mouths."

I watched every episode of their reality show. Something is seriously wrong with these people. The mother sounds like she has an IQ of under 60 and the kids talk like zombies, as if they are on drugs or something.

And it was interesting just because they are so strange. She dresses all the kids alike, the girls all wear dresses or skirts (and really bizarre hairstyles) and all the kids talk like robots. If it's possible to imagine people with no personalities, that's this family.

Kate is a total bitch and before someone goes all nuts on me for saying that about a mother of 6 kids - I fully believe she was a bitch before she even had her first child.

Plus, she treats her children horribly.

146. I posted in another thread that I watched it once and about 90 seconds into
it my jaw hit the floor and even the ads didn't dislodge it--diapers, cleaning products, manufactured eats.

My jaw stayed on the floor for about 59 minutes. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing and that it wasn't a joke.

167. I don't know how old your dad is
but my dad was one of a large family. In his day, though (the 1920s), families had large families because many children never lived beyond childhood. My dad's dad, in fact, died when my dad was about 6 from tuberculosis. Technology and medicine hadn't developed much in the way of antibiotics when my dad was born, hence, many families had a lot more kids in those days just to make sure some of them lived longer.

My mom had triplets in between my two brothers, in 1958, but they all died--if the science and medicine we have now had been around then, they most likely would have survived.
