Casey: The real China syndrome

Medford - Over the last few weeks, we have been inundated with news reports concerning international protests targeting China’s involvement in Tibet.

Tibet receives abundant media coverage largely because it has become a trendy cause for Hollywood liberals, Europeans and others looking for something to do when they tire of criticizing the United States.

However, when looking at what’s wrong with China, Tibet is just the tip of the iceberg.

China fought with North Korea against the U.S. during the Korean war. Though a cease-fire has been in place since 1953, a state of war technically still exists. A battle is also brewing between China and Taiwan, an island holdout since Mao Zedong’s communists took control of mainland China in 1949.

Like any totalitarian anti-democratic regime, the Chinese government controls the media and feeds its citizens a steady stream of propaganda. Those who commit the crime of expressing an opinion contrary to the party line are prosecuted and imprisoned.

China’s constitution guarantees its citizens “freedom of speech, of the press of assembly.” However, the same document also dictates that the rights of the people “may not infringe upon the interests of the state, of society and of the collective.” In other words, the Chinese people are free to say whatever the Chinese government allows them to.

FULL story at link.

1. is it racial? mental? are the Chinese stupid?
why on earth would a proud people having an ancient culture like China's descend into tyranny? Could history have anything to do with it? Is it possible that the history/story is 999 pages long, and this Casey feller stewed up a little paragraph which he tacked onto page 999?
Another thing. The PRC was born OF revolution, and the government of China was driven out, across the straights to Taiwan, formerly Formosa, where it remains today. The gov of China set up shop in Taiwan, and dreamed one day of returning to their capital, Beijing. BUT. Beijing was already the capital, of the Peoples Republic of China! And indeed the PRC government, whose authority was won with untold bloodshed and in defiance of the nuke powered west, making it about the most legit government on earth- blood being precious to the Chinese people (though of no account to western journalist, it seems)...anyway the PRC claims authority over TAIWAN too!
In other words, the 'real' China syndrome may well be that the nuclear powered PRC might not take no for an answer regards Taiwan (which has quietly shelved its own claim to the mainland) and this is probably something a 5000 year old culture should work out itself ...little lies told in charming ignorance about this heavy duty stuff...impresses no one, but the busheviks sure have lotsa money, and they sure need lotsa distractions from the blatantly criminal regime of junyer bush. Ahem....Move along, nothing to see here....
