Medford - Over the last few weeks, we have been inundated with news reports concerning international protests targeting China’s involvement in Tibet.
Tibet receives abundant media coverage largely because it has become a trendy cause for Hollywood liberals, Europeans and others looking for something to do when they tire of criticizing the United States.
However, when looking at what’s wrong with China, Tibet is just the tip of the iceberg.
China fought with North Korea against the U.S. during the Korean war. Though a cease-fire has been in place since 1953, a state of war technically still exists. A battle is also brewing between China and Taiwan, an island holdout since Mao Zedong’s communists took control of mainland China in 1949.
Like any totalitarian anti-democratic regime, the Chinese government controls the media and feeds its citizens a steady stream of propaganda. Those who commit the crime of expressing an opinion contrary to the party line are prosecuted and imprisoned.
China’s constitution guarantees its citizens “freedom of speech, of the press
of assembly.” However, the same document also dictates that the rights of the people “may not infringe upon the interests of the state, of society and of the collective.” In other words, the Chinese people are free to say whatever the Chinese government allows them to.
