1. That's just cruel. For a second, I had hope.
In France and Germany, they have incredibly extensive bus routes, light rail, and bullet trains connecting different parts of the country.

In the US, our railroads are decaying, and we junked many of the street trolley companies back in the 1950s in favor of cars and interstates. We have crap for mass transit, and Amtrak is slowly being strangled to death by Repub fiscal conservatives who see it as a waste of money.

3. Where I live, except for old town, there are few sidewalks but plenty of streets.
Usually, the only option is to walk on the side of the road, but it happens to be the run-off ditch when it rains, so yeah, you're basically walking in the ditch as a substitute for a sidewalk. I know your pain. I wish we had invested in mass transit to alleviate the oil prices.

4. Even though its annual subsidy
is only worth 4 days of the Iraq War and, when the airlines received a $35 billion bailout after 9/11, that was more money than Amtrak had received in subsidies during its entire existence.

5. Amtrak doesn't transport troops to far off war zones
Airlines do.

Wonder who gets more money?

9. I hate to say it, but war is extremely profitable if you're making bombs or winning contracts.
They throw billions your way, and in return they get to look patriotic and tough on national security.

It's probably the most profitable racket in the world. They make the Mafia look like small-timers.
