Siegelman released from prison pending appeal
by kos
Thu Mar 27, 2008 at 02:09:29 PM PDT

Just hit the wires:
http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2008/03/siegelman_to_be_released_from.html

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals has granted former Gov. Don Siegelman's request to be released from prison pending the outcome of his appeal.

Siegelman is currently serving a 7 year sentence in the Oakdale Federal Correctional Complex in Louisiana following his 2006 public corruption conviction.

Acting U.S. Attorney Louis Franklin confirms the 11th Circuit granted Siegelman's release in a four page order which states Siegelman had raised a "significant question" about his conviction.

That "significant question" is called "Karl Rove".

Siegelman was already slated to be temporarily released for congressional testimony. This move likely ensures he never sees the inside of a prison cell again.

20. And how Bush Sr. pardoned all the Iran-Contra republican operatives
even before some of them were convicted of their crimes...which were OBVIOUSLY committed with the help of bush sr.

8. Everyone who called the FCC and congress who acted to put pressure
on the FCC to investigate that news station, and 60 Minutes at CBS, should congratulate themselves( I am as I called a bunch of people with FCC oversight). This is a reversal of Roves reach into the courts of Alabama. its time to put the repugs who did this in prison. Respect for the rule of law needs to be enforced. We helped to get it done.

23. DU has been all over this since the Time article.
A lot of credit goes to Scott Horton, TPM, Legal Schnauzer, Locust For Journal, Time, 60 Minutes, and all the bloggers who would not let their investigations go unnoticed.

Follow the story, beginning when it hit DU from links here:

10. if he ends up acquitted, and state opinion approves of it
Makes 2010 interesting as hell. Right now, Folsom and Sparks seem sure bets for both Gov and Lt. Gov and for winning said offices.

A Siegelman retrial and acquittal, if the public agreed, would turn politics in this state into a turmoil. Cause then there would be a question of who takes what, and as far as I know, he wasn't disbarred, which would make him eligible for every elected office in the state. Now, there's no way in hell he could beat Shelby. However, if all this mess was settled before June (and let's be honest, Figures is a sacrificial lamb), well, Siegelman has the same geographic base as Figures (and Figures......)

I'm saying if there was a way to put him on the ballot before November, you could talk Figures into stepping aside. I'm just saying the potential exists.....

26. Update:
Actually, the Justice Department hadn't agreed to release Siegelman for the testimony. Too bad Mukasey's effort at stonewalling the congressional investigation was rendered moot by the appeals court.

:grr:
