3. How do the people in the military fool themselves into believing they are
contributing to the good of the nation?

11. It is the enlistment to grave paycheck and free health care.
They are contributing to their OWN good.

The overriding reality here is big fat paychecks for 20 years, 60% retirement
for the next up to 50 years. It is security for life. Would you KILL for that?

Many retired military get more pay per month plus benefits, for many decades after retiring, that real workers earn.

19. Retired military deserve every penny paid to them
There are tons of Veterans here on DU. More here then on fr. They are real workers and I think that your comment about people who serve are killing for sub-par wages is as stupid a comment as I've heard in the last 8 years posting and reading here on DU.

30. Read the question! How do people in the military fool themselves.....
The answer has context!

How do they fool themselves in your view?

29. Certainly there are some who join for that
But I think that many simply want to serve their country. My wife and I were both set to join after 9-11. We were nearly done with college and were going to enlist as officers... then they started beating the drum for Iraq, and we started looking more into politics... Not firing a gun for this country unless someone tries to put their boots on our soil.

Money had nothing to do with our decision to join.. and subsequently to not join.

4. Bush gave the audience close scrutiny to make sure everyone applauded on command!
And they all did, what with Bush being the Commander-in-Chief.

BUT, what are they thinking? As soon as they get out of the monkey suits,
they'll be casting votes in this DU poll  Poll question:

If BUSH wasn't President, would he be committed for his delusions?

8. There were 2 (maybe 3) applause points in the speech
and plenty of points in the speech that could/would have been applauded if it were really unscripted

relied on to applaud on command any more.
