Another excellent reason to own a Hybrid vehicle...
In case you need incentive!

In California, anyway...

I've owned mine for two years now, and love the mileage, the handling, the spaciousness...

Today, I received my new registration stickers...

And I realized that not once have I had to get a smog check!

:)

1. My dear CaliforniaPeggy!
Good for you!

Hopefully soon, every American-made car will be a hybrid, so we can buy American-made cars and help American workers.

3. My dear ih8thegop!
Wouldn't that be great?

Clean up the air, reduce our need for oil, and provide jobs?

Sounds like a little bit of paradise that we desperately need...

Thanks...

2. As nice as it would be to own one...
the nearly $10k difference from a non-hybrid model is a big deterring factor. At some point I have to worry about myself before the environment. As much as a new car (hybrid) would be nice, a used gas powered mpg-efficient car is just as good.

5. That is a problem, for sure...
The price is high...

Hopefully over time, that will change...

6. To be fair, the difference is about $5K, not 10.

8. I'll meet you at 7

Just went browsing yesterday, and similar models are about 7 at least in difference. That's assuming you get them both "fully equipped"...but then you have to consider you're looking for new models that you want to consider when purchasing used ones.

12. Maybe it depends where you live. I got a fully loaded Hybrid Camry off the lot
for 29.9K .... The best they could do on the non hybrid with all the bells and whistles was 26

15. I guess you're right
Northern California Sacramento area probably is more expensive than elsewhere.

9. Oh, OK...
I knew it was more, but wasn't sure just how much...

And for some people, that is a deal-breaker...

Some car dealerships tack on a "premium."

We told ours that if the "premium" didn't vanish, we wouldn't buy the car.

They blinked!

They knew we meant business, and with the car being one without a lot of extra features, they knew it would be a hard sell...

I'm not sure, though, if those will continue...

I'm glad for your mom!

10. Good for you Peggy.... you are on the right track with all of that...
it is my personal belief that school busses should have pedals in each seat. A carbon fiber, narrow tired, aerodynamic, solar cell coated, partially human powered schoolbus. 'Course, the last kid off would have legs like Ahnold if he/she survived.

13. If you go up/down hills a lot, that's also an incentive.
With a conventional engine, you have to keep burning fuel to go up hill, then convert all that energy to heat in the brakes as you head downhill. No matter how efficient the engine, you still waste a lot of energy. With a hybrid that uses regenerative braking, part of that energy is returned to the battery instead, so the mileage advantage of the hybrid will be greater than on more level ground.

Residents of SF and Pgh, pay heed!

14. An excellent point!
And at stop lights, the engine shuts off...

NO idling...

NO wasting gasoline...

I love it!
