Not Pretty Enough?
Edited on Tue Feb-27-07 02:39 PM by rebel with a cause
I checked but this wasn't on list. Similar story on other thread on blog, so it is not a duplicate.

Some girls allege they were booted from a sorority because they weren't attractive enough. CNN's Keith Oppenheim reports (February 27).

Video about sorority throwing out young women who were not pretty enough. Targeting those overweight, minorities, and etc. Ex Members of "Dog House" made complaint.

1. I thought most of them did that.
At least that was my impression when I was in college.

Not only that, the girls had to do degrading things and get treated like shit in order to join. That's why I quit. I didn't need to be degraded in order to prove my sisterhood.

2. I think they all do also.

My daughter was invited to a sorority type recruitment party. Never went. She was smart, but as a poor girl with a racially mixed heritage (identified as Latina), she was just not interested in being either rejected or a charity case.

3. My roommate and I were "invited" to join a sorority
The year was 1968.. We showed up at their little "tea party" wearing frayed jeans, tee shirts & mocassins :)

They were agog in their matching Bobbie Brooks sweater sets :)

We finished out the evening at a local bar laughing our asses off at the looks on their faces :)

4. Bear in mind that the most illustrious alumnus of DePauw is....
(drum roll, please)...

...J. Danforth Quayle. He'll probably be doubling his contribution now. :eyes:

I hear the baked potatoe in their dining halls is excellent. :sarcasm:

12. Why are you blaming the University?
This was all the sororities fault as far as I can tell from the video.

The University is even weighting the option of getting rid of the sorority.

17. It's just that Quayle is perhaps the ultimate example of style triumphing over substance.
which is clearly what's going on at his alma mater.

True, national DZ is the villain here -- but then, why does that chapter have more trouble than others recruiting? Rushees choosing style over substance?

5. If they want to
know why sorority membership is low, maybe they should review the video, hint girls the answers in there

6. I feel for those nice girls who were insulted and hurt and admire
those that quit who didn't have to. This is common practice in sororities nationwide.

7. I never "got" the sorority thing
thus I never did it.
Luckily my girls didn't either. However, one of their friends went to University just to join a sorority. She had straight A's in high school, was Homecoming Queen and Prom Queen. She was always buying formals when she could find them on clearance for the many events she would be needing them for as a sorority sister. She couldn't wait.
She is now in her third year of University...living in an apartment off campus.
She was never "asked" to pledge even though she is a pre-med major on the Dean's List. She is black.
Again my statement. I never "got" the sorority thing.

13. Neither do I.
But when I worked as a professors assistant for two years at the university, I could always tell the sorority girls and fraternity guys from the other students. I had worked with youths with behavior problems so I did well with the jocks, but the cheerleader types was another thing all together. No big problems with them, just a snotty attitude.

My professor was very impressed that I had most of the students (around 300 different ones every semester) peged with their names, but I had the worse time telling the blonde cheerleader types one from another. They just all lookded the same. :7

9. I never got the Greek thing myself.
When I went to college, there were plenty of fraternities around, but I never felt the need to be pressured into binge drinking, hazing rituals, spending thousands of dollars on Rent-A-Friend. Lots of frat guys were just plain nasty to be around, so I found other circles of friends.

11. Yep.
We had nine fraternities for about 1100 men students. I was a GDI (god damned independent).

15. Its been 35 years since I was in college
but in those days, the sorority thing was all about 'looks' and different sororities had different standards, although if your parents were wealthy and you had a cool car, you might slide by.

The greek thing was definitely not in vogue in the 1960's, but seems to have had a resurgence, unfortunately

16. 'Being greek' in college is a wonderful experience.. but it depends
very much on the campus environment, the chapter, and the members themselves. This particular abomination was perpetrated by the national office of Delta Zeta sorority- and they will pay dearly for it in the years to come.. in terms of alumni support, and chapter growth. Please to keep in mind that even among 'greeks' ourselves -both undergraduates and alumni- this story is pretty horrifying.
