12. AP: House closes its doors for spying bill
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080314/ap_on_go_co/terrorist_surveillance
By PAMELA HESS, Associated Press Writer Fri Mar 14, 8:05 AM ET

WASHINGTON - The House held an unusual closed-door session to talk about classified intelligence gathering in anticipation of a vote Friday on a warrantless eavesdropping bill.

The Democratic bill would set rules for the government's surveillance of phone calls and e-mails. President Bush has vowed to veto it.

The president's main objection is that the bill does not protect from lawsuits telecommunications companies that allowed the government to eavesdrop on their customers without permission from a court after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

House Republicans succeeded Thursday in delaying the vote by one day by requesting a rare, late-night closed session of Congress to discuss the bill. It was the first secret session of the House in a quarter century.

The last such session was in 1983, on U.S. support for paramilitary operations in Nicaragua. Only five closed sessions have taken place in the House since 1825.

39. New FISA Compromise Is an Improvement, Still Raises Concerns
http://www.aclu.org/safefree/general/34440prs20080311.html

3/11/2008

"“While we still have concerns about aspects of the new House FISA bill, the American Civil Liberties Union is encouraged by the new draft – particularly the language on state secrets, which would allow the cases to go forward while allowing the telecommunications companies to assert any defenses...

"We do, however, continue to have the same reservations we had about the RESTORE Act passed by the House last fall. The provisions in that bill and this new bill allowing for bulk collection of communications and dragnets are inconsistent with Fourth Amendment protections and thus we cannot endorse the bill...

“The recent revelations from a new Verizon whistleblower who tells a story similar to the allegations of the AT&T whistleblower – that telecommunications companies are allowing wholesale access to US customer communications without warrants -- coupled with the story in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal about the reemergence of the total information awareness program make clear that Congress and the courts need to investigate the facts before blanket immunity is even considered.”

ACLU Letter to the House Regarding Draft FISA Legislation, H.R. 3773 (3/12/2008)

Re: Discussion Draft of H.R. 3773

http://www.aclu.org/safefree/general/34444leg20080312.html

"...Despite these laudable elements, the ACLU cannot support programs that provide for bulk collection of American communications – and this proposal authorizes just such a program. As the Wall Street Journal reported Monday, wholesale collection of Americans’ information is an ongoing and increasing problem that continues to encroach on our rights. Every time we think we understand the scope of surveillance undertaken by this administration, new facts emerge that show the scope of spying is even broader. We encourage Congress to do extensive oversight to learn how this Administration has violated our rights so we can begin the process of rectifying the many abuses of power that have been committed."

"bulk collection of communications" is a huge issue.
Would this slip by at all, if we were not watching
the wrong side-show, the telecom immunity distraction?

Meanwhile, is the recent rash of releases of info on surveillance more cover-up,
intended to avert discussion of a more serious crime, databasing the entire stream?

Is the crime something far more disconcerting than "bulk collection of communications"
as "they have protesteth way tooo much" this week!!

The propaganda campaign must be hiding immensely impeachable offenses.

MORE from: Are ALL COMMUNICATIONS routed overseas to circumvent US law and the Constitution?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=2935817&mesg_id=2935967

I was told years ago that ALL fiber optic communication traffic was routed overseas so that "everything" was moved outside the protections of the law and Constitution and ANYTHING could be monitored. I thought the idea quite fantastic even though it came from a very reliable source that would know exactly such things. Then, the story of the fiber optic splitters hit my radar. I now see now how easily exactly that, routing ALL COMMUNICATIONS overseas, was accomplished.

Is this Bush's and the Telecom's HUGE crime hidden and covered-up behind this story?
If the telecoms get immunity, will it aid in covering up Bush's crime.
ABSOLUTELY! That is why it is so important to the Rs!

Supporting telecom immunity = obstruction of justice.

Have we arrived at the point in the history of the Bushco junta where
laws passed and people nominated are part of crimes of obstructing justice?

137. That could be partially true, just posted the Kucinich statement
as to why he voted against the bill.

Did we really win or just take take our eye off the full picture.

http://kucinich.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=86082

Kucinich Opposes FISA Bill That Infringes on Fourth Amendment Rights

Washington, Mar 14 -

"Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) released the following statement regarding his opposition to the FISA Amendments Act of 2008:

“Blanket warrants, institutionalized by the Protect America Act, will continue with the enactment of the FISA Amendments Act of 2008. Under this bill surveillance of persons abroad could infringe on the Fourth Amendment rights of U.S. citizens,” Kucinich said.

The FISA Amendments Act of 2008 is the latest version of FISA legislation to be considered by the House of Representatives. Provisions outlining the conditions under which a warrant can be issued are vague. They require no evidence of wrongdoing and contain no explanation of how the information will be collected. The bill also permits warrants of an undefined scope. They do not need to contain details about the facilities, places, premises or property to be searched. These provisions undermine America’s Fourth Amendment rights.

“The Constitution dictates that the government must have cause to spy on U.S. citizens. But this bill ensures that all targeted international communication that the government intercepts is not covered by the Fourth Amendment even if a U.S. citizen is involved.

“Although this legislation was an improvement over past versions of irresponsible FISA legislation, it does not include retroactive immunity for telecommunication companies and ensures that the courthouse door remains open. I cannot support a bill that undermines Constitutional protection of civil liberties.”

“If we permit our constitutional rights to be watered down out of fear, we have given up our democracy. Congress must stand firm and defend the Constitution,” said Kucinich."

"Though highly under-emphasized, the theft resulted in the exposure of some of the FBI's most self-incriminating documents, including several documents detailing the FBI's use of postman, switchboard opperators, etc., in order to spy on black college students and various non-violent black activist groups. For more information on this subject see COINTELPRO"

Postman. Switchboard operators!!!!!

"The Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI was a leftist activist group operational during the early 1970s." (Their one act was the theft and distributionof FBI records.)

They broke into a small FBI office and stole some classified records. Sent them to the media and got them published in a peace magazine - WIN Peace and Freedom, etc. Shut the operaton down.

Imagine. Switchboard operators - a few decades difference.

Which theft is less - stealing our privacy or stealing their documents of them stealing our privacy? Why do they make us face all these sticky situations. And we still pay them to steal from us.

Who posted the essay about all crimes having one crime as its constant center - the crime of theft.

Just a little diversion to show that our problems do not go away.

86. Lundgren Throws The Desperation Pass...
"Aw c'mon...just roll over and pass the Senate bill". How amusing to see the GOOPers squrim under the legal games they used to play and knowing they're about to go to a crashing defeat.

Remember, they want the Senate bill NOW as this is this regime's last real chance to get its ass covered for months to come...if at all. The longer this "debate" goes on, more information comes forth showing more people have been wiretapped and that this regime is covering up mass spying on millions of Americans...or, even more damning, is targeting specific people for reasons far related from the conveluted "war on terror".

I've been critical of Hoyer caving to the GOOP in the past, but he's really stuck it to them in this debate. They wanted a FISA bill...threw their tantrums, and when he was good and ready, they got one...just not the one they wanted. Now he's letting them choke on it.

105. Hoyer Is The Real Power Here...
A lot of the crap thrown at Pelosi has more been the work of Hoyer...the traditional role of the Majority leader is to "move the agenda". DeLay was the real power, not Hastert...and in this congress, it appears Hoyer is the gatekeeper as to what gets moved to the floor and when and which version is the underlying bill. In the past he was way too accomodating...but at least in this case, he's dug his heels in and has done a great job behind the scenes in getting this bill passes and even bringing Blue Dogs along.

Lets hope this is the much needed spine injection.

One thing th telecom immunity debate has seemingly accomplished
is to alter the focus on FISA law, such that a further erosion

Reid: "Very Encouraged" By Passage of House Bill
By Paul Kiel - March 14, 2008 - http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/03/reid_very_encouraged_by_passag.php

Just out from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV):

“I am very encouraged by House passage of a new FISA bill. The new House version adopts the basic structure of the Senate-passed bill, but contains added privacy protections. Now is the time for Republicans to come to the negotiating table so we can resolve the last few issues. The President should stop giving high-handed speeches in the Rose Garden and start working with Congress to finalize this important national security bill.”

Just out from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV):
