How about an annual DU "Excellence" Award? And how about
Edited on Thu Feb-07-08 12:33 AM by Cyrano
we make Nance Gregg our first honoree?

There are many literary awards including the Pulitzer Prize for journalism, The Edgar for mystery, The Hugo for science fiction, and so many others. But as far as I know, there is, at present, no award for online commentary.

So how about we begin one here on DU? My reason for nominating Nance Gregg as the first nominee is due to her insightful posts, or more properly her inspirational online "columns," her long-established excellence, and perhaps, most importantly, her dedication to serious, civil, elegant discourse.

So how about it? Skinner? Moderators? DUers? Would you like to see the best of the DU best recognized annually?

I guess this idea is up to Skinner more than anyone else. So how about chiming in here with your opinions on this idea?

On edit: I'm not talking about a single post or two. I'm referring to ongoing excellence consisting of a body of works.

6. The term "best" is subjective.
I'm not talking about a "best" single post or two. I'm talking about someone who consistently achieves excellence in their posts.

Of course it's subjective. But consistently "best" can be selected by a DU vote.

So my original qustion stands. What is your opinion of the concept of an annual DU award for execellence?

7. For "execellence"? I'm sure the recipient would be honored.

8. No, it's not a popularity contest. It's a judgment call regarding
elegant, meaningful prose, insightful commentary, and the ability to move people with reasoned arguments, positions, and the occasional soaring usage of language and logic.

In the meantime, it's late, and I'm crashing. I'll pick up on any replies manana.

4. Where do I sign the petition?
There are some damned fine writers hanging around here.

We have one of America's finest poets who is around here just about every day, and hardly anyone knows.

There are some songwriters deluxe here, as well.

Dancers, painters, actors and actresses, (I had lunch with one of DUs finest, and one hell of an actress in her own right, in NYC just a couple of weeks ago).

But there is only one Nance.

I read this, from her Journal, at the Celebration of the Life of the one-and-only Tom Snyder - my best friend. It brought down a serious house:

9. Love love love Nance...but
There's plenty of clique-ishness already, and cream always rises to the top, whether it gets a gold star or not.

I think we ask for trouble when we try to single out people ....for good or for ill..

DISCLAIMER..... DUzys are something entirely different and we shall always cherish them (or the memory of them, if JeffR has to give up doing them  )
