Once again, Republican turnout in the S.C. primary did not match turnout in 2000

In 2000, 550,168 voters turned out for the Bush-McCain S.C. primary. In 2008, with the state's population higher, and 97% of the precincts reporting, only 430,919 voters turned out. The exit poll also shows that among actual self-identified Republicans, McCain lost to Hucklebee 32%-31%.

There is a real lack of enthusiasm for the GOP field among their voters this year.

Republicans are in deep doodoo. If McCain wins the nomination, the evangelicals won't vote for him, and they're a major voting bloc in the GOP. And if Huckabee wins the nomination, sane people won't vote, even though their voting bloc is not as large in the GOP.
