Honda's FCX Clarity(The Zero emission sedan of the future?)
http://automobiles.honda.com/fcx-clarity/interior/

It's smooth-driving and roomier than the booth at your favorite bar, and it looks like the offspring of a space ship mated with a mutant Accord. But, by golly, it's a real car.

The question is, will Honda really sell the FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle in any significant numbers, or is this just another ploy by the company to claim it was "first" at some significant development in automotive history?

Honda still won't say with any clarity how many Claritys it plans to offer at $600-a-month leases in Southern California next summer, which lends ammunition to those who accuse the carmaker of grandstanding for PR purposes.

But Honda did say it plans to build this car in Tochigi, the location of the small-volume plant that gave us the Insight, S2000 and NSX. And the "production" FCX Clarity we drove recently in Southern California meets all FMVSS regulations for crash testing and other government standards and will be manufactured on an assembly line just like anything else Honda makes. So it's a finished product. The FCX concept car we drove a year ago (AW, 10/23/06) was almost identical to this production version but last year's car didn't have any safety technology like airbags, lacked the full range of interior comfort and convenience features, and didn't come with the final chassis and suspension setup. It was also operating with 10 fewer kW of electric motor power.

1. There is the notion that Americans must drive BIG and/or EXPENSIVE vehicles..........
Edited on Sat Jan-12-08 06:20 AM by Double T
and this immediately needs to change. We need Smart Cars, nanos and other inexpensive high mileage, low emission vehicles that already exist EVERYWHERE ELSE in the WORLD except HERE! The decision of what we drive needs to be taken away from the corporate criminals.

4. I've never had any trouble finding inexpensive low emission vehicles in the US
But of course my definition of vehicle is a bit unique:

I'm sure studded snow tires and ski-type outriggers must help!

6. There's snow and ice less than five days a year where I live
It works just fine the other 360 days.

Of course it should be noted that there's lots of snow in places like Boulder CO and Madison WI and people manage to get around on bikes in those cities, along with lots of European cities.

3. I think the GM EV1 was "too expensive" for mass sales
Hydrogen fuel cell cars are ridiculous. We can never support a mass fleet of those. I think we will have a different design of battery electric cars or compressed air or people will find a way to take the bus. Quite wealthy people will still drive on $14/gallon gasoline, though.

7. One of more interesting things about this car is that Honda plans to build the unit that charges it
Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 07:38 AM by AP
so that you can run your home off of it too.

Honda also recently bought a solar panel manufacturer.

So it sounds like they want to integrate all these things.

The electricity to create hydrogen out of water will come from solar panels on your house. Your house and car will run off hydrogen, and the house can also run on solar power.

Your fuels costs will drop by more than 1/4, and it will be very clean.
