http://www.dailypress.com/news/local/virginia/dp-now-wittmaniraq.0108,0,1860642.storyWASHINGTON - Freshman Virginia Rep. Robert Wittman, on his first visit to Iraq, said Tuesday the U.S. effort to stabilize the country is "going very, very well" and the Iraqi government is beginning to create "bits and pieces of a democracy."
Wittman, a Republican from Westmoreland County who won a special election last month, joined two Democratic congressmen on a week-long trip that is scheduled to include visits to Jordan, Lebanon and France.
The trio spent Tuesday in Iraq, visiting with top military officials in Baghdad and in western Anbar province, where violence by all accounts has lessened in recent months.
"We've seen a lot of great strides," Wittman said. "The country is much, much more secure."
