I don't like Republicans
Edited on Wed Jan-02-08 01:49 PM by MrScorpio
But when I think about all the Republicans I've ever known, I think of only how so very few of them are admirable.

Former Mich. Gov. William Milliken. In the world of republicanism, he's always been an iconoclast. Progressive and outspoken in his disdain for every regressive trend that his party has been sponsoring since the so-called Reagan Revolution. He's currently in exile in Traverse City and I wish him well.

One other being Barry Goldwater in his later days. He was probably the least guileless Republican I've seen in my entire life. He was notorious in his bluntness, and it got him into a lot of trouble. But looking at his views, a lot of the positions that "Mr. Conservative" stood for were 180 degrees opposite of what the so-called conservatives are standing for today. Pro gay rights, pro choice, distrustful of the Christian conservative influence in the Republican party and pro-conservationist.

No "conservative" today has the balls to stand in his shoes.

It's very hard for me to say nice things about Republicans in general.

About today's batch, they can all go to Hell.

2. I would add John Dean to that list
a man who loves his country above his party

I even think he calls himself an independent now

12. Hagel and Dick Lugar, although Lugar wimped out on taking a stand
against the war. Both are statesmen who love their country more than their party, and Lugar was very kind to Obama and took him under his wing when Obama was a newbie.

5. Me neither!
There are always the exceptions, I suppose. Just as we have had a few Tories, mostly a long time ago, such as Harold Macmillan and R.A. Butler, and even Ted Heath, who were overall to the left of Blair et al. But on the whole, if you're a decent individual, you're not going to make it hard for yourself by attaching yourself to an indecent party. And my view is that Thatcher here, and Reagan in the USA, have moved their parties so much to the right, and away from decency, that few good people would remain in their parties.

6. My favorite republican is Pete McCloskey,
I believe he originally represented Palo Alto, California and last ran in the Tracey Stockton area, and lost. He was more liberal and honest than a lot of democrats and I know he must be really sad about the morons who now run the party, especially in California.

8. My sister
is a total, 100%, unapologetic ditto-head. She works during the day, but actually listens to Rush's show on the computer every single night. All three hours! And everything she quotes regarding politics and news is something from his show.

But I still love her. She is funny and a good mom and very caring and generous to the family. So it's hard to really criticize her in that regard, but man - she does need to broaden her source of information!

9. I don't like Republican Icons.
The President, his cronies, most of those in Congress, and CERTAINLY the Pundits. I have hope for the rank and file, however. More and more are seeing the light and leaping the fence these days. All they need now is to know what we're fighting for, as well as fighting against.

10. I've met a few I personally get along with...
but legislators? Hah.

Of those I get along with, I only count the ones who can have a civil discussion about our differences. The ones who get their 'information' from talking points (i.e. the VAST majority of them) I do not get along with.

11. Lowell Weicker wasn't bad in his day
He was to the left of his eventual replacement - Joe Lieberman - on most issues. He was also helpful in getting Ned Lamont to run for Senate in 2006.

19. I would add Warren Rudman to that list
while he retired from the senate as a republican, I seem to think that he, too, has stated that he views himself now as an independent. But I could be wrong about that.

21. Rudman was pretty conservative, however
though, he was a decently respectable one. Certainly more sane than 95% of today's Republics in Congress.
