33. I don't even know a cursed man who has had as many personal
quirky things happen to him as Dick Cheney has had:

9/11, four heart attacks, shoots his friend in the face, an office fire, was the submarine accident at the beginning of the Bush presidency Bush's friends or Cheneys?

107. We have the right to ask if the documents that are under subpoena
were destroyed in that fire. And if they don't produce those documents, we have a right to protect them from being destroyed, since the entire building has the same wiring system, a fire can happen again.

89. Funny, the first thing I thought was that it was the CIA...
Since the war between the intel services and the regime ramped up in recent weeks (did you notice how the WH plans for WW3 in Iran were derailed?). If there is an arson behind this, I would expect it would be as a message from CIA or some such to Cheney. If he resigns suddenly, that would be an indication tending to confirm.

Then again, it could be just a fire, you know.

If it is Cheney's crew, then keep in mind this is not how they destroy documents, they can just do that without fanfare. This is how they distract from something else, or attempt to attract sympathy.

46. Sure, but maybe they're trying to "hide it in plain sight"
Try this one on for size: "Cheney couldn't have possibly lied about WMD in Iraq as a reason for invasion, after all he would have known that the invasion would prove him a liar - therefore he must have been stating what he thought to be the truth."

In this case it would be: "why on Earth would Dick Cheney light a fire in his office to destroy evidence? Surely he would know that this would be a supremely obvious way of doing it. Cheney is a smart man, there is no way that he would do anything that blatant."

And what would be the rationale for the accidental destruction?

What would you say?

Why not name five better ways of getting rid of evidence that won't generate suspicious questions. You can't merely claim that you "lost" them or that your dog ate your homework.

By the way, arent you the person that took me to task for going after Steny Hoyer and Rahm Emanuel?

91. "...Cheney's ceremonial office..."
IF there are claims of destroyed documents relating to ANY of the current scandals, I would have to ask "Who and why was anyone working with these particular documents in the VP's ceremonial office?"

I've done discovery (and would love to work on this case) and the LAST place you work on that kind of production is the company board room or the boss' office. No, they sequester the team in the basement with supervision and where they can ensure security. Anyone with discovery experience would tell you exactly the same thing.

There are thousands of people in the DC area who have worked on these kinds of cases and there are thousands of people in the DC area who will know in an instant that something is fishy if any claim is made that the documents Congress demanded had been destroyed.

I don't think you even need that little hat for this one. I said in another thread that this is a perfect example of "the dog ate my homework" and anyone who does not at least question this is hiding their head in the sand IMO. This is their MO, if they can't get away with using national security for their reason or executive privilege then they have things disappear.

Either they burned evidence or they can claim it was burned if they are asked for it.

Since no one can investigate we will never know. Pretty smart on their part, very bad for the American people.

As in Chess, Cheney just said "Check" and then he did that ugly evil grin thing he does.

A lot of posts are speculating that the fire was a cover to destroying Cheney's documents. But Cheney's working office's aren't in that building -- his working office is in the White House. He has a ceremonial office in the Exec. Office Building.

53. Some interesting connections - current and historical
Historical:
http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/brief-fire-occurs-white-house/story.aspx?guid=521A9963-9DAD-4F92-988D-0721D2EC3C8A&dist=SecEditorsPicks
The building, commonly called the Old Executive Office Building, has a long, colorful history. Several presidents had their offices in the building. It also housed the office of the secret White House plumbers, who engineered the break-in of the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate that ultimately forced President Richard Nixon to resign.

Current:
Had read this in the morning paper:
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/344089_ciatapes19.html

Judge orders hearing on destruction of CIA tapes
Agency had been told to safeguard evidence

The ruling came amid news that at least four top White House lawyers took part in discussions with the CIA between 2003 and 2005 about whether to destroy the tapes, according to current and former administration and intelligence officials.

Those who took part, the officials said, included Alberto Gonzales, who served as White House counsel until early 2005; David Addington, who was the counsel to Vice President Dick Cheney and is currently his chief of staff; John Bellinger, who until January 2005 was the senior lawyer at the National Security Council; and Harriet Miers, who succeeded Gonzales as White House counsel.

Hmmm, so it's been reported that NSC's offices are in the building, I saw somewhere on DU earlier that White House counsel's offices are there (anyone can confirm that?) and Cheney's adjunct office was there (convenient to Addington, I'm sure).

Coincidence?
I'll be keeping this on:

57. There were no important documents lost in that fire.
I'm sure that any documents that might have the slightest bearing on crimes committed by this administration
have long since been removed from Cheney's office.

The point of this fire was to establish a broad excuse to cover any and all information requested by committees and/or grand juries.
Dick "I-Lost-It-In-The-Fire" Cheney. Hey, you can't have the documents if they're gone, right? Pity!

Right. I hope and pray that somehow, during my lifetime, that guy gets put behind bars. I don't care if it's for jay-walking or tax evasion, as long as
it's for a long, long time. He makes me physically ill. They all do.

allowed in the building to investigate. The SS stopped them. *Ahem* Did they need time to cover their sorry asses? Me thinks so!

75. I don't see the point of them doing something so blatant.
Their sneakiness in the past has always been so full of skulking, headline-avoiding, and hidden in the shadows. It really goes against character type and modus operandi for them to do something so high profile and so likely to garner attention. I'm sure we'll find out in the days ahead that there's some 25 year old Bushbot who's been given too much responsibility and who was ignoring some basic safety precautions.

The last thing these punks do is to call attention to themselves. With this crowd, if it looks like a fuck up and quacks like a fuck up, you can safely bet that it is the basic fuck up it seems to be.

76. MIHOP wouldn't surprise me. And it doesn't matter if anything was destroyed.
Let someone prove that a tape or document wasn't destoryed in the fire. That's when something really blantant like arson comes in handy. Our ony hope is if they outsourced the job to "Arsonists on Call" and paid by gov't credit card similar to what Scott Bloch did with his computer hard drive.

78. How's this for tinfoil?
Maybe it wasn't Cheney at all. Maybe someone was sending Cheney a warning message, akin to the Godfather. Cheney does deal with some shady sorts, after all.

I'm amazed at how many times in the past 7 years I've invoked the phrase, "Now, THAT's one for Ripley!"

Coincidence after coincidence after coincidence after coincidence, etc.

I've never heard of a federal bldg. burn since 1812 (Pentagon, notwithstanding). And now THIS! Wow! Who'da ever thought?

And just in time, too.
