Poll question: Charlize Theron is a US citizen
Would that make her an African-American?

--------------------------------

LOS ANGELES, Sept 13 (Reuters) - South Africa's Charlize Theron gained dual U.S. citizenship this year and in her first movie since, the A-list actress tackles a very American subject with "In the Valley of Elah," which looks at the human toll of the Iraq war in this country.

The actress calls herself "politically aware" and not one to "walk around with blinders on." So whether in "Elah," workplace drama "North Country" or her Oscar-winning turn in "Monster," Theron wants roles that challenge fans to think.

"I question authority, question what the government is doing, and I think that is an incredibly patriotic thing to do," Theron told Reuters.

Theron is quick to say, "I love America and love living in this country," and to be sure, she sees "Elah," as a story about people, not politics.

Born in South Africa to American parents (Semetic and Caucasian) and naturalized upon his parents' return to the states when he was 3 years old.

So, yes... he and Charlize are African-Americans.

22. CNN still refers to them as African Americans
During CNN's December 6, 2005 broadcast of rioting in Paris, Lin referred to two North African youths who had been killed as "African-Americans". They were French citizens of Tunisian origin.

24. That's incorrect
Most blacks in Europe were born there and still live within the borders, they haven't even set foot in the US. You can't be African-American unless you are born here or are a citizen.

Edited on Wed Dec-19-07 10:00 AM by Dorian Gray
When I lived in England I made the mistake of referring to a friend (who was black) as African American. (Ingrained into my psyche!) I got an earful back from him! He in NO way was american, and please don't call him that ever again! He laughed with me for a bit. I explained that I was uncomfortable using "black" to describe a person because I felt that some may be sensitive to the term. He said "black" was fine.

31. This reminds me of a thread a few months ago
when a Norwegian DU member posted about how proud they were when a "colored" women won a place in their new cabinet.

You would not believe all the condemnation on DU trying to ensure that the rest of the world complies to the US' vernacular when in comes to how people are described.

Because we know, whatever the US does, the rest of the world must follow. :eyes:

35. I have to admit
the when I hear "colored" it makes me cringe. So I can understand the response to a certain extent.

I do think some allowances should be made for different cultures, language, etc. I also think it would be ridiculous to insist that a black woman in Norway should be referred to as African American. Just NO!

45. Because when the organization was created that was the acceptable term
"Colored" was the standard reference in 1909, and the organization retains its original name.

"Its name, retained in accord with tradition, is one of the last surviving uses of the term "colored people". The group is based in Baltimore, Maryland."

25. The designation of "Afro-American" was created
in order go give black people a sense of a history and a culture that was stripped from them by white European slaveowners. Caucasians are able to take the knowledge of their own culture and history for granted, a privilege that african-americans did not and mostly do not have but are attempting to reclaim. Questions like this basically mock the injustice that was done to african-americans by stripping them of all sense of identity in order to enslave them. Of course, you knew that.

This OP reminds me of questions like "Why isn't there a White History Month?" :eyes:

I understand your point, and I think that if this were a really serious discussion involving any legality into the matter, I'd agree with you. But, the OP just seemed like silly speculation, and as I said in my prior post, I do have a male South African friend who jokes about this sometimes. (Though never officially states that he's African American.) And because I felt like it was silly speculation, I guess I didn't find it all that offensive.

"Africa" is a continent, not a color.

Saying that she should *not* be called an African-American is like saying that a black person from Sweden who obtains American citizenship should not be called a Swedish-American, since Swedes are "supposed" to be white.

76. Hey, the whole thread was based off
an obtuse interpretation of the phrase "african-american" so a bunch of white people can sit around giggling about how silly it is, so are we surprised that it degenerated into a bunch of drooling monkeys posting variations of "I'd hit it?" At least no one's mocked the Holocaust yet, but it's still relatively early, so I won't hold my breath.

DU is just full of bigoted crap today.

And yes, she's African-American, just as if she were from Ireland she would be Irish-American.

The only note that's been missed is homophobia but hey, the day's still young.

78. I vote, White Person
I always thought the in order to be called an African-American one had to have been in the States AND be a descendant of slaves.

I am African and an American citizen, I have not and will never refer to my self as a African-American.

80. Her ancestors were European.
At one point, her family may have settled in Africa - but her ancestry is European. Thus, she is an African citizen of European heritage, who has just gained American citizenship and...OH JESUS WHO GIVES A FUCK?!?

"Her ancestors were African.

She's from Africa. She has dual citizenship. She's African American.

My SIL is from Canada and she has dual citizenship. She's Canadian American.
