Blast From The Past - GWB, Jan 2001: "There is no excuse for arrogance"
Edited on Sat Dec-15-07 02:47 PM by EarlG
I'm doing some research for the Top 10 and stumbled across http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2001/1/22/213715.shtml">this article from January 2001 (sorry, it's NewsMax). Anyone remember this?

Bush Urges High Ethical Standards

WASHINGTON (UPI) – President Bush witnessed the swearing-in of his White House staff Monday and said he expected them to avoid even the appearance of impropriety and to conduct themselves with humility and civility at all times.

In an East Room ceremony, Vice President Dick Cheney administered the oath of office to several dozen White House staff members. The oath is not unlike the oaths Bush and Cheney took Saturday, committing the oath-taker to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic," and "bear true faith and allegiance to the same."

(snip)

Bush warned that he expected his White House staff to meet the highest ethical standards, avoiding not only violations of law, but even the appearance of impropriety.

"We must remember the high standards that come with high office," he said. "This begins careful adherence with the rules. I expect every member of this administration to stay well within the boundaries (that) define legal and ethical conduct."

(snip)

Bush told his staff that he sees civility as a central part of the required behavior of White House staff. "There is no excuse for arrogance and never a reason for disrespect toward others," he said. "I expect each of you ... to be an example of humility and decency and fairness."

24. Heating oil was.........
.99c a gallon then in 2000. I talked with my oil man's wife this week, for that info.
Last week it was $3.25! I paid $162. for 50 gallons last Friday! It is 10o outside hasn't been above freezing for 36-48 hours. Just 50 gallons between me and death/bailout! I think my stingy LIHEAP allotment will take me through to mid January!
I have an old receipt from 12/12/86. I got a tank fill up, 550 gallons back then for only $140.92! It was 71.9 then.

Lets see, 1986-2000 from .71.9 to 99. Price increase of .28c in 14 years.............
2000-2007 from .99c - $3.25? AN increase of $2.26; IN 7 YEARS.

DO YOU NEED A BETTER TALKING POINT TO CONVINCE YOUR REPUG FRIENDS TO VOTE DEM? (Kucinich or Edwards!)

29. You are better off using the oil just to keep the place from freezing
and to keep your pipes running, and then use a spot electric heater to warm a small area.

Look into e-heaters, put them on an inside wall--they're safe and they will warm up a room at a reasonable cost (they're electric convection heaters).

7. Link doesn't seem to be working
Here's another crazy one though: Bush's acceptance speech at the 2000 Republican National Convention.

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2000/conventions/republican/transcripts/bush.html

"I am proud to have Dick Cheney by my side. He is a man -- he is a man of integrity and sound judgment who has proven that public service can be noble service."

That's in the first ten seconds, you can imagine what the rest is like.

10. And the official white house ethics statement...
I think they broke every single one of these provisions by June 2001.

I'll see if I can fix the link above. Thanks for the heads up.

11. As usual, he said exactly the opposite of what he meant
He's so predictable.

"We will be ethical,"

"We will protect the people,"

"We will not interfere with other people's business,"

"Oil prices are too high,"

"We will protect the constitution."

14. "Help is on the way." --- to Gulf Coast Katrina victims.

Link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4204754.stm

Mr Bush dismissed criticism that he had been slow in responding to the unfolding disaster, and had not yet set foot on the ground.

"I hope people don't play politics during this period of time," he said.

"There'll be ample time for politics. But now's the time to focus attention, our compassion and our resources on helping people who need help".

Translation .... "I hope I am not held accountable for being such an inept and pathetic fuggup."

"I'm pretending to do something while playing class warfare politics. I want those people dead, and I'll blame it on the dems afterwards."

15. Some of the stuff the Repubs spit out after Clinton's impeachment is also quite hypocritical.
Look it up sometime, turnabout is fair play.

18. THANKS! Do you know how many times the word "law" appears in their quotes?
40 times. Law, Laws, Lawyer... Wave that freak flag, baby.

Incredible. When a Dem is the focus, suddenly they know the Constitution by heart:

"The founders felt impeachment was so important it was included in six different places in the Constitution."

And words such as accountability, law, honor...words that they now choke upon. I won't even try to count them.

"'So what? I committed perjury. So what? I broke the law. Let's just move along.' I believe we've got a constitutional obligation to act."

Yes, if only.

20. I don't remember that,
but it's in keeping with the admin's policy of "eternal opposite day."

I remember them telling us how their foreign policy was going to be all sugarplums and candy canes, and it was of course a box of horseshit-filled chocolates.

"I expect every member of this administration to stay well within the boundaries (that) define legal and ethical conduct."

And, lo, it was all smoke and mirrors.

Then he morphed into commander-in-chief of foreign policy.

What a long road it's been.

26. Between this and the "no nation-building" answer during the debate...
It's amazing to see so many Americans swallow the whole Shrub transformation into WarChief without so much as a blink.

I know I sure get tired of saying "I told you so..."

30. Most certainly. It reminded me of NIXON, and some used car salesmen.
At about that time in history, I was thinking about how every law and every appointment by the junta would eventually have to be annulled, overturned, or reviewed when Constitutional governance was restored. So that seemed like the epitome of insult heaped upon injury. He was assuming power based on a lie.
