Poll question: Which group takes the most punishment here at DU?
It is my experience that there are certain trends here, one of which is the following:
- "newsworthy" event occurs
- people post for/against someone or some group involved in the "newsworthy" event
- other people post about how horrible the first group of posters are for their position/opinion
- still other people post that there is too much __-bashing going on and that we should all stop it

This is a general pattern which varies to some degree depending on the topic/lunar cycle/available intoxicants, but it does exist in pretty much this form.

The question is, of all the groups that get bashed here, who do you believe gets bashed the most?

Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 05:38 PM by tom_paine
Just by standing up to Bushler and his Henchmen ONCE!

Just by saying, (I choose one example but it could be any of a hundred things), just ONCE, "Harriet Meirs, present yourself or yuou are going to jail for contempt!"

or how about this one?

"Alberto Gonzales, I have never seen a more clear cut easy-to-convict case of perjury in my life. You did it a dozen times and it's all on videotape, as is the testimony of all of those who contradicted you INCLUDING the Director of the FBI. The evidence is being presented to a Grand Jury. Preliminary hearing for your trial starts next week."

So many people think so many of us DUers are just Democrat-bashers. Well, I can only speak for myself, but if I am a mindless Democrat-basher I sure have got a funny way of showing, donating well more than $1,000 total over the last three elections to DSCC, DCCC, DNC, and various candidates. And I am a lower middle class person, this is not money I can easily part with.

Funny way of showing it, given my 20 or so hours of volunteeer work on Congressional campaigns in '02 and '06, more like 70-100 hours on Congressional and Kerry campaign in 2004.

I see all the Party-before-Country people are making their voices heard with their "Democrats are more reviled than Republics here at DU".

Well, I am and will always be Country-before-Party and if my Party is in deriliction ofthe most basic duties top protect and safeguard freeom and liberty for furture generations, then I WILL NOT BE SILENT. It also doesn't mean that I am letting the Bushies off the hook, either.

To all the (rhymes with glass-moles) who voted "Democrats", go Cheney yourselves.

Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 07:58 PM by tom_paine
I usually don't do this, but I couldn't fail to notice you are a registered member since 2007.

I say this not to belittle you as a "newbie" or to insinuate that somehow being here longer (much longer...since late Mar. 2001) makes my opinion more valid than yours. It doesn't.

But what it does give me is a span-of-time view of DU that, unless you've been lurking here for six years before you registered, you don't have.

You say that the Democrats get bashed more than the Bushies here at DU. That is patent nonsense. That is so beyond the pale and ridiculous that it staggers me with it's audacity and ignorance, especially for someone who has been around here for such a short time.

You are seeing the inevitable frustration of people, like myself, who busted our asses of for these Dems and donated bank to them for no return on any of the things which are important. It is coming to a boil now, as many people are at different times each getting to what they/we consider "the final straw".

You think that makes the Democrats, angry as we are at their spineless weakness, more hated than the Bushies?

Good Lord! You sound like a Bushie insisting that anyone who criticizes them hates America, sorry but it's true.

If what the Bushies had done was less severe, I would agree with the Party-Over-Country crowd that strategically it would be wise to let the Bushies have enough rope to hang themselves.

I told you what I have done to help our Democrats, what have YOU done? Got a $1,500 credit card bill because your cash shortfall for the past six years happens to be identical to what you wound up donating?

Did you walk your feet raw and swollen canvassing two week before election day, then take they day off on election day so you could do it all over again?

I have already wasted too much time refuting your blather. Go and make some more excuses. haryy Reid's next pitiful surrender is right on the horizon. Today he issued more of his bullshit empty threats about prosecuting Bushies for destroying the CIA torture memos.

It's no wonder the Bushies piss all over him, I can't even watch it without laughing at his pitiful impotence. It doesn't have to be this way.

And if you think Harry Reid's serial deriliction of duty to the Constitution and nation makes him a worse criminal than the Bushies in the eyes of DUers, well that's patent nonsense, too.

Go on and watch. I have seen this same kabuki dance so many times it makes me nauseous. I can retrace the steps in my sleep.

Go ahead, come back and talk to me after Harry "inexplicably caves" when the Bushies refuse the first subpeona or threaten him in any way.

Go ahead. Watch and learn. You think that makes me HAPPY to say that? You think I like to see what may well be our last hope for a free future pissed away by the people I poured my guts out for to help them get their majorities?

That's patent nonsense, too.

This conversation is over, feel free to get the last word if you wish.

Oh, and make sure you contact me when Harry caves on his latest Phony Tough Talk. You can tell me how you're so proud, or make whatever excuse and rationalization will satisfy you this time that "his hands were tied" :puke: .

Not me. Lame excuses and kabuki theater and Fake Tough Talk isn't enough for me anymore. I wonder how long they will work for you?

Unlike you, I have the anachronistic belief that Nancy and Harry and my reps are there to fight for me, not their limos and creme brulee.

You can say that's just repeating Bushie memes, but I never said ANYTHING like that about the Democrats (even if I was dissatisfied withtheior performance) until early 2007, when much to my horror, it turned out to be true.

STILL doesn't make our Democrats worse than Bushies, not even close. It just makes them the German Social Democrats to Bush's Hitler.

248. Okay.
Sheesh!!!

I don't know what to say except, "the last word", in my world, includes asking you to reconcile with me.

First, we have to decide what it is over which we must reconcile.

Okay?

I am sorry I hit a "button". I wasn't aiming for that (as I fully expressed myself).

Can we start over?

288. Yes. We can start over. Thank you for your explanation and kind words.
At the end of the day, we are all on the same side.

There is nothing left to reconcile. The storm passes and the clouds break.

I took umbrage that anyone could honestly believe that the Democrats were more disliked on this board than the Bushies.

That is what pushed my "button".

Yes we can start over.

Peace.

6. Republicans! but Christians run second
Not that some don't deserve it (the fundies and hypocrites) but there are many good Christians out there in the model of Jimmy Carter and others who do good work and don't judge others. Sometimes I feel that some on DU don't see this.

76. Some drug dealers are good people.
But, because they are law-breakers, and because many people have no close personal contact with good people who deal drugs, many have no problem with "tough on crime" laws that ruin families and lives of good and bad dealers equally. To this, people will defend their position by claiming that good dealers are few and far between or that the lives ruined by drugs outweigh the ruination of the good dealers' lives, often with personal horror stories for further justification. Should these people be more discerning when discussing drug dealers by making a distinction between good dealers and bad dealers every time they discuss drug dealers or should we be more understanding of people who make sweeping statements about drug dealers because there is likely some reason for their position, be it personal experience, simple ignorance or just a poor choice of words?

203. I'm pointing out how people make broad statements and assumptions about groups.
I didn't say drug dealers are good people, I said some drug dealers are good people. Apparently, you have no problem with painting every member of a group as good or bad by your definition of the group, but you have a problem with anyone doing that with a group you belong to. That's hypocrisy.

It is institutionalized, after all (like classism and sexism), and it's harder for people who benefit from such a system to realize and acknowledge this.

I should track her down again.

She did the props for SNL as well but there are a lot of nasty chemicals involved in creating such things and she had the funniest stories.

I called her once and she was shopping for dismembered limbs around Halloween, telling the salesperson, "no no no that gangrene is ALL WRONG."

Then another time she had to make these giant costumes that resembled male genitalia and after working on them for weeks they cancelled the skit.

She was really funnier than a lot of the writers actually.

24. Interesting question.
I was initially going to say "republicans," but then I re-read the OP and realized that one of the patterns you stated was people trying to stop the ______-bashing. As far as I know, people trying to stop republican-bashing is a pretty rare occurrence here at DU. :P

Now, as to my vote. I'm probably going to take a lot of criticism for this, but I voted Christians. Don't get me wrong, I fully understand that this is NOT the case in the "real world," and would not have selected it had the question not related specifically to DU. I also realize that contempt towards Christians here is nowhere near as severe as the pure hatred and horrible things directed towards homosexuals, minorities, and other groups in some places of the country. Believe me, I do understand, and I would much rather have bigotry directed towards Christians online than towards any of the other groups mentioned in the OP, online or otherwise.

However. It seems like here at DU, it's perfectly acceptable to generalize, insult, and make unfounded assumptions about Christians. Not entirely without reason - most of the people who claim to be "Christian" in the public sphere today are, let's face it, assholes. But it gets just a little tiresome when you can't so much as state that you are a Christian without snarky comments being made about your "insanity" and "foolishness," comparisons to sheep (or worse, repubs) being made, and basically a complete lack of respect for your (assumed) beliefs, possibly because of the assumption that Christian = homophobe fundie psychotic bigot who wants to take your rights away and make you worship Jesus. And yeah, there are enough of those in the world (too many, really), but you know what? Most Christians here on DU are not like that. If they were, they'd be posting at Freepworld.

Look, I know Christians aren't popular here, and I understand the reasoning, but I wish some people would understand that not all Christians are evil Republican assclowns, and that those Christians posting here on DU at least deserve a little respect for trying to get said assclowns out of office. If you can't respect their beliefs, that's fine, but is it really necessary to jump down someone's throat practically every time something like this comes up and call them "insane?" I realize that some of you have had bad personal experiences with Christians and the church - also totally understandable. But is it really necessary to take out that anger on DUers by insulting them solely on the basis of what they believe (even though they are not forcing anyone to believe the same thing)? I mean, I've met several atheists who were complete assholes, but I also know that some of the atheists here are really great people, and I don't mock or insult them because of what they believe (or don't believe, as the case may be). Same with Christians. Yes, I was raised Christian, and although I'm still trying to sort out my beliefs, I think the basic tenets of "love thy neighbor" and "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" work pretty well for me.

I guess what I'm trying to say with this long and convoluted post is this: Not all Christians are evil, so please stop generalizing and directly attacking the faith of posters here. Disagreement is cool, but outright rudeness based on your (possibly incorrect) perceptions of what someone else believes? Not so much.

OK, I think that's it. :P Peace. :hi:

100. See my post #76 above...
I think people assume others mean something they might not and that what constitutes being rude/polite is universal and should be conformed to by everyone. While I don't think you're wrong and you do have a number of good points, you have to realize that there are a number of reasons why good people might hate (or seem to hate) Christians, and simply telling them not to won't get you very far. The best way to change minds is to offer proof to the contrary. Show otherwise, if it's important to you.

115. Fair enough.
And I'm certainly not telling anyone not to hate Christians - I just wish some people would lay off of making it a point to deride every single post by someone who identifies as Christian when they mention their religion and/or beliefs. As far as proof to the contrary, I try to do that by my words and deeds, but some people aren't going to change their opinion. And that's OK - like I said in my previous post, I understand the dislike or even hatred people feel for the religion as a whole. I guess it just bothers me to be called "insane" and to have people imply that it's OK to kill Christians because they haven't been persecuted as much as other groups. I don't support the persecution of any group because of their religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, skin color, or any other characteristic, and I just have trouble understanding why some progressives would be OK with that. Anyway, thanks for your thoughtful response - you've made some very good points, and I'll try to be better about seeing things from the perspective of others. :hi: Peace.

And if that group is a race, it's called racism. And if that group is women, misogyny. etc,

The best way to end bigotry, racism, misogyny starts with the group who holds those attitudes, not the group in question.

140. Sorry.
Cities routinely decorate for Christmas, only recently changing the terminology to "holiday festival" or some such garbage to quiet those "uppity atheists/Jews/whatever" that complain about separation of church and state. The fact is that until those uppity whatevers complained, Christmas was being celebrated on our tax dollar all over the country and it basically still is, which could not be accomplished by a non-dominant force. Thus, I was being ironic, or something.

58. Other: Undecided people who have questions
Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 06:18 PM by Mike03
A major reason I post here is because I'm not sure about my stances politically and want input and ideas from others.

But when I come here to ask questions, I'm immediately attacked or people suspect I have an agenda. My questions are met with suspicion, sarcasm, or just plain ignorance.

I used to come to DU to become educated more than to post opinions, and I still do, but it's become so unpleasant here that it's really... Eh... I don't even know how to express how bad I feel about how this place has become debased.

It's really depressing to me, because no matter how bad things were I could always come here. I would say, sometime after Fuck Head was re-elected, this place changed.

And I know I'm part of that trend, because I'm not the gentleman I used to be. I'm getting pissed and more pissed with each day, and having more and more trouble hiding that when I post here. I used to be very polite, but I'm starting not to give a shit anymore.

61. I selected "Other" - fat people.
Every single time there is a thread about weight, dozens of people come out of the woodwork with the sole purpose of denigrating fat people. It's the last acceptable prejudice, even among progressives.

Some vegans tend to be confrontational, like PETA, though, so I can understand that (not that I condone it).

221. Most bashing does not equal to most no. of people doing the bashing imo
Edited on Thu Dec-13-07 12:44 AM by Reterr
A vocal minority is all that is needed to create the volume. As for the Kooch, I don't think people like him because of the veganism (hell I am a vegan and I wouldn't vote for someone on that one issue-specially if that is just their dietary preference and not an indication that they will do something about the USDA/the meat industry/factory farming etc.). I think with some it is in spite of that ;) :P.
Anyway I don't mean to come across as whiny-I just think that vegs get bashed more than most other groups on the left, because a certain group of people associate all of us with the craziest and most militant PETAns(again who are a very vocal minority in the AR movement) out there.
Peace

293. I understand that, but ...
my point was that I don't think Dennis is attacked BECAUSE of his veganism, whereas vegans in general are subjects of ridicule on DU. Why isnt he attacked for it? (or at least not attacked as much as one might think he would be, given the anti-vegan sentiments of DU). Because people respect him. What's missing here is simple respect for one another, for our beliefs and practices when they have nothing to do with our progressivism, and in fact even though they enhance our progressivism to us. Respect in that sense is a sadly devalued commodity today.

150. Some DUers who bash RW Christians dont see or care
that they are (purposely or inadvertently) including progressive Christians in their bashing. I think this is expressed in the poll as a statement from Christians (and sympathizers?) who feel the unfairness of what we see as the bashing of progressive Christians, and it shouldnt come as any surprise to observant DUers.

181. Republicans, definately
I see the mindset of the evangelican Christian to be basically that of a modern Republican, probably because the modern Republican has used basic Christian ideas and manipulated them into free-market worship and being pro-business to the detriment of everything else.

But Republicans usually have that model, the "strong father model" without being devout Christians. So they come from a similar mindset.

I'm surprised that gun owners don't have more votes, though. Not winning the poll, certainly, because gun-bashing runs hot and cold, but when it's hot, there's plenty of vitriol. "Gun pimps" is only lukewarm in those threads...

210. Well, the most fanatical Christians...
...that have the most effect on public policy and politics are have the most organization, which is something that the pro-business Republicans do well. By the pro-business Republicans offering rigid, effective organization to the fanatical and largely unquestioning Christians, both factions are gettting plenty of "strict father model", which is something they desire, seek out, and support.

And non-fanatical Christians, liberal Christians, don't have the organization to be an effective force yet. Many liberal, politically-active Christians are busy fighting on the streets for the poor and troubled that are the victims of Republican social-program cuts... which gives more political and financial resources for Republicans and less for Democrats, so Republicans win more and more at the ballot box.

You should read "Dont' Think of an Elephant" by George Lakoff. It's quite a revelation!

247. I would agree with you there, except
there are so many groups, it's really hard to call just one.

Women, yes. They are constantly mocked for their looks, their dress, their behavior, for having the nerve to go out in public with breasts, harassed for not being dressed "well" enough "she looks like she bought her suit at K-Mart", but when they are dressed perfectly, they are harassed for being superficial and spending too much on their clothes. Every rape victim is assumed to be lying, gender slurs are used regularly, women here are objectified to a frightening degree, and they are used as metaphors for all things bad.

However - I have also seen threads saying that the last acceptable bigotry here is homophobia, and I see a lot of that here as well. Lots of snarky assumptions that all bad people are gay.

And fat jokes still abound (particularly when related to women).

Age discrimination is very alive here, and ranges from assuming people past the age of 50 are unlovable unless they have large wallets to mocking people for looking their age. And if they get plastic surgery to hide the signs of age, they are mocked for that as well.

I am also constantly blown away by the bigotry here against Mexicans, against Muslims, against African Americans. There have also been some Christian bashing threads I've spoken out against, but I wouldn't call them an oppressed group in this country because they are, in fact, a privileged group. So they endure some slander, but at the same time their status awards them material gain, so although I speak up against it, I don't concern myself overly much about their status as a target for discrimination, if that makes sense. That's the same way I feel about straight white guys. I would like to see them on the whole be more concerned with the fact that women make 10,000 a year less than them on average than concerned with the idea that someone insulted them - given that those insults are obviously not "holding down the man" in any way. Likewise, I would like to see them more concerned with the fact that one out of six women are raped in this country, than concerned that one out of fifty of those victims are lying - which is the norm for any crime.

Those fights get pretty ugly with little accomplished and they tend to take over, so the decision was made to exile them to I/P for everyone's benefit. It is true that this is an important topic with a broad impact on everything else but, to drop a bad metaphor, some places have really shitty parking.

The 9/11 stuff I don't understand as well, but I think it may have been based on how some people feel that if a few people here are throwing around ideas most people think are crazy that it reflects bad on all of us (which I don't agree with, but is also related to this poll).

222. That would be GLBTs
Every time a Rethuglican gets caught in a sex scandal there are countless gay jokes spewed here on DU.
The number of Do you think Republican X is gay? posts here is astronomical. Accusing them of being gay is not based on any evidence , but merely meant as a slur.
Even here on DU we have to fight with people who don't think we deserve equal marriage rights.
We have to defend ourselves against people who support themselves or others denigrating us based on their "deeply held religious beliefs".
People think it's cute to post little songs and jokes insinuating politicians have homosexual orgies with one another.
Any time we try to point out homophobia or ask people to stop it we're told to "lighten up" and even accused of "histrionics".
Every single time elections come around we're told to stop demanding our rights lest we "lose the election for the Dems".

Of course there are more issues I can't think of at the moment but those are some of the most significant and pervasive ones.

225. Depends on if it's your ox getting gored or not.
People are more likely to notice "bashing" when it's something that hits close to home. From what I can see, there are vocal minorities all over DU stirring shite up equally whenever their pet topic for attack arises, so it seems that there's a ganging up when those few self-described true defenders get involved.

There's always going to be those who need to fight for or against something. What's sad is when those who need to fight don't know when to stop, call it a draw, and move on.

Seems to be The American Way these days.

It's all about feeling good and feeling powerful, and never having to face the possibility of any difficult truth.

Too many Americans would rather fight and die to preserve whatever Matrix or Status Quo that makes them feel comfortable, rather than search for or face even the remotest possibility of dealing with any difficult truth.

It's very sad.

It seems to be a knee-jerk among most (or at least a great number) of DUers to criticize someone for their religious beliefs.

The recent shootings in CO are DU classics: calling the hero of the event "more scary than the killer" because she is very religious.

238. One could say the same thing about those who immediately get defensive when religion is questioned..
...or criticized. What is sacred is NOT universal, it's entirely relative. And what one person thinks of as a joke, another may think of as taboo. If someone wanted to bother to take the time to do it, we could easily find out what group gets bashed the most on DU, and I'm pretty sure it isn't Christians, though that seems to be a popular, if inaccurate, meme. It even goes along with the religion's martyrdom motif.

I posted it because there were a number of people complaining recently about some of the categories listed getting unfairly and unevenly bashed. I suspected that people who closely relate to those groups were being sensitive and defensive, and I posted this poll to test my hypothesis (and was pretty much empirically supported). If you "have no clue what people are talking about," you either haven't been on DU in months, don't read or have so many people on Ignore that you aren't qualified to identify trends here. And, while the argument can be made that ALL polls are bunk and that I am indeed a trouble maker, you are completely wrong and apparently have no clue what you are talking about either.

280. Democrats by a huge margin.
Posting something along the lines of "Fuck Pelosi" will get you 100 replies and 100 recs minimum.

Meanwhile, a post on the Senate Judiciary Committee passing a resolution on finding Rove and Bolton in contempt of Congress doesn't even crack double digits.

Anyone see a problem here?

283. Nope, because of expectations.
Democrats are supposed find Rove and Bolton in contempt of Congress. That's their job, and they're about a year late in doing it. And that is why people post things like "fuck Pelosi" that get agreement - many of us feel betrayed by the people who are supposed to be representing us. If you own a business and you hire someone to clean the bathrooms, would you allow them to make excuses for a year before they did it? Even if the excuses are valid, the performance is entirely unacceptable.

284. Interesting: Christians and Republican are about equal
even though all of the Democratic candidates for president are Christians.

291. I think it's about feelings & emotions. I.e., Ouch!
A third of those responding are saying they're hurt by what is said about Christians on DU. I assume they mean what they say. I do. For me it hurts to have my beliefs regularly trashed. There I said it. Ouch. Gee, yep, I'm sensitive. Isnt being sensitive (to others hurting as well as our own) a quality of a progressive, a quality the RW mocks us for? It especially hurts to be lumped in with the RW because of my belief, a belief which is really for me a main root of my progressive views.

Other posters are saying no, the first bunch is wrong, theyre not hurt, or they want to see themselves as hurt (martyrs), or theyre not as hurt as a lot of other people or groups here, or they deserve being mocked and ridiculed for believing what they believe. Still, to me, it comes down to a sizeable number of DUers--Christians or sympathizers--simply saying ouch. I'm curious if the poll has surprised anybody else or led anybody to consider changing their posting behavior.

292. You're not contradicting what I said, not that doing so was necessarily your intent.
Feelings get hurt when someone perceives that a group they identify with (or otherwise support) is being bashed. Hurt feelings can blur and exaggerate the actual number of instances and/or severity of bashing.

And I'm not sure anyone learns anything from any of my posts other than how much of an asshole I can be, heh, heh. But, if so, great and if not, whatever.

294. I was just offering another facet of it is all.
I guess because I see myself as an independent Christian,
the idea of group identity makes me draw back a little.
I believe emotions drive us a lot more than we might like to think,
and even some of our most "rational" responses.
For me the thread was educational and in fact inspiring,
and I'm also surprised that there were only a couple deleted messages
in the whole parade.

285. By volume...
Republicans, Democrats, and Christians are in a very close running. Of course, these categories may overlap subjectively... where do you put Hillary bashing for example?

The rest are certainly violently bashed BUT in far smaller numbers.

Also, you forgot "conspiracy theorists" and "the loony left."
