UK resort bans homophobic music
UK resort bans homophobic music

One of the UK's favourite cities for holiday-makers has set a precedent by placing a ban on homophobic music.

Brighton, a popular coastal resort, is the first to take such action which will have implications for several Jamaican artistes.

Under Brighton's new laws, establishments that play music by reggae and rap artists that promotes hatred against gays will be closed down.

In releasing the news, British newspapers reported that the so-called Murder Music by a number of Jamaican performers has been linked to violent attacks on gays in both the UK and Jamaica.

Last year a concert by Buju Banton was cancelled after Brighton police notified the club that his lyrics could result in violence against gays.

2. I guess I am stupid but
unless the words are bashing gays, what would be that kind of music. I know I wouldn't listen to gay bashing music, but I don't listen to current music and would not know the difference.

4. Interesting...there is a guy at work that listens to Buju Banton.
He doesn't seem homophobic, and I've never noticed any anti-gay lyrics coming from his computer.

5. I'll be damned if I'm going to actually post the lyrics themselves
But here's a link to one of his songs where he advocates shooting gays in the head. :puke:

6. Amazing, the printed lyrics are as difficult to decipher as the singing.

8. Torn on This
I don't think anyone on DU, including myself, would support this sort of music, but letting the government decide what is and isn't homophobic seems like a bad idea.
