Poll question: The poll on whether to spend time clearing winter mix falling on top of snow
Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 08:37 AM by HereSince1628
Is it better to let the freezing mix fall on top of the snow or is it better to get the snow out from under it and deal with whatever freezy mix sticks to the cleared pavement later?

or you'll be dealing with a bigger mess or do what I (have) do now and just wait for it all to melt! :D
I have two frozen cars here, covered in ice... again! I have frozen snow covered in ice and we can't
find any ice/snow melt stuff (rock salt) for sale to save our lives. I wish we had removed the snow before
the ice fell! Now it's an uneven ice skating rink here and I almost fell 6 times yesterday trying to
scrape all the ice off my car. Good luck! They say it'll be warming up today and I can't wait!

5. The idea of frozen fossils of slushy foot prints remaining until either March
or sublimation isn't pleasant. That's part of what started the discussion here over early a.m. coffee.

7. It's not just unpleasant but it's also dangerous.
I needed to get to the store yesterday but the roads were so bad, I only went a short distance
and then parked it. But I'm going to try again today. I just can't eat 'only pasta' until it all
melts and there's more rain coming tonight (I think) and more snow coming Thursday too. I hope
I can find some ice melt today. We didn't remove the snow a few days ago because it froze before
we could get rid of it. My back hurts today from the 'almost' falling. I may have slightly pulled
some muscles.

6. I've heard talk of this "snow". Is it dangerous? Does it smell?
"Snow". Perhaps I shall Google it.

9. When you get a chance to see some snow
look for the yellowest piece of snow and make a snow cone. Then enjoy the taste.

8. Get it out of there
Because if you don't the snow will compact into thick ice, then you'll have rain on ice, which can ruin your day. If it's warm enough for rain, you may get lucky and will peel right up.

I have some tire tracks from compressed snow, and it's now bumps of wet ice. A little magnesium chloride this morning plus the rain should loosen it up enough. I hope.

Good luck!

10. Get it off now. I always take a baby aspirin before
shoveling snow to help prevent heart attack risk.

14. I've become afraid of spraining my finger on the "Start" button
of my Binway Super SNOFLIPPER model BR549. It's an obsolete but servicable 12 cylinder 360 hp turbo-charged snow launcher with a pair of 18 by 36 inch tracks rotated by an 8 speed tranny with independent power to both front sprockets. I modified the scrapper bar so that it doesn't eat uneven sidewalks and low porch steps anymore.

The 1000 watt aircraft landing light makes it easy to use at night, when shined on icey spots they vanish into sublimation.

Last year after launching an unseen snow-covered copy of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal into low earth orbit with the 2nd stage of the thrower running on "low" I spent 4 days being intorturated by Homeland Security. They seemed convinced that I had shot the frozen paper wad at Delta flight on an inbound approach to Mitchell Field. Apparently they had already been on an emergency alert when the starter motor caused a regional brown-out.

26. HAH! Since you mention it...

It's a 1970 Gravely, 1 cylinder, 7.5 HP, 4 speeds forward and reverse with no clutch it's all planetary gears, no brakes either, just put it in reverse to stop. It cuts an acre with under a gallon of gas, and burns no oil yet. I have a homemade plow that replaces the mower deck as we don't get enough snow for a blower attachment. This thing is pure torque and scares the crap out of people.

That is something we used to see on the TV screen a long time ago before we got cable.

13. Let it sit. Mr. Tesha did a controlled experiment yesterday.
Mr. Tesha unintentinally did a controlled experiment yesterday
and the results are definitely "let it sit".

Pre-conditions: A large blacktop driveway with about
an inch of snow on it with about a further quarter-inch
of "winter mix" glaze on top of the snow.

We thought it was over. It had been dry for a while
and the weather folks said "it's over".

So Mr. Tesha cleared a shovel's width the entire
length of the driveway. Along the way, it started
"winter mixing" again so he packed it in.

Later, yesterday, when it really was over, he and I
easily cleared the entire driveway right down to
the pavement, *EXCEPT* for that shovel's width
which is now a half-inch of very-well-bonded
glare ice.

Luckily, today it's sunny for at least the morning
after which the "winter mix" returns :( .

21. Just to follow up...
The shovel-wide icy patch lasted about two days before
it could be mechanically removed. Meanwhile, the rest
of the driveway remained clear and dry.

The weather guys say we'll have more chances to experiment
by tomorrow morning, but this time we're forecast for just
snow, not a "wintry mix" ;).

20. That'd take more than one bottle of Bailey's--this might not melt until April.
Maybe curl up with acouple cords of firewood and a half dozen cases of Bailey's.

19. Clear the snow NOW or it will be so heavy with the ice on top it will take forever to remove it.
This comes from experience. Been there, done that! and regretted it.:)

25. I can see snow topped mountains
from my porch. We deal with snow once a year and that's when we take the dogs to play in it. They are good for about 10 minutes. DD goes to the snow with friends. When she was a toddler we took her and her best friend to the mountains. They made a snowman which was about three inches tall.
