Otis Redding died 40 years ago today

This is a statement about the tragic death of Otis Redding, the four members of the Bar-Keys, the pilot and Otis' valet. It was 10 December 1967, just three years earlier to the same day Otis' idol Sam Cooke was shot dead in LA. "(Sitting On) The Dock Of The Bay" was recorded on 6/7 December 1967.

I walk my dog (see avatar) by where the accident happened almost every day.

1. That is good reason
to get out the old 33 LP with Otis Redding recorded live at the Monterey International Pop Festival, and listen to some beautiful music. The live version of "I've Been Loving You Too Long" is outstanding.

7. That was the best
Although I might have to go for Try a Little Tenderness.

I've watched the film version of that Monterey Pop Festival a dozen times, and Otis is always the highlight (along with Jimi and Janis). I have a special place in my heart for Otis Redding, whose music was always playing on some jukebox in some cafe during the year I lived in Paris as a young student. When that soulful music infiltrates the zeitgeist, both wistful and idealist, of a twenty-year-old American in Paris it never goes away. That music will always be with me.

3. I wish I had met him
Otis and I were raised in the same town. His parents were from the same small town that my mother was born. We were in the same grade and went to school less than a mile apart. The problem is that our schools were segregated. He was in the black school and I was in the white one.

Otis went on to fame, fortune and riches. I didn't. There must be a moral in there somewhere.

4. As I understand it, all commercial aircraft had been grounded

that day due to bad weather, but Otis knew he was right on the brink of big crossover success and didn't want to miss an important college gig, and decided to make the flight to Madison in spite of the weather. There's a beautiful tribute song to Otis by his protege Arthur Conley (the guy that did "Sweet Soul Music") called "Otis Sleep On". If any of you younger DUers don't know much about Otis beyond "Dock of the Bay", check out the movie " Monterey Pop" and watch Otis blow the crowd away.

9. I'm listening to "The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads"...
Absolutely fantastic! And, of course, if I could have one dream come true, I would want to play with Booker T. and the M.G.s....

12. Otis helped get me through my tour in Viet Nam.
His "Dock of the Bay" was one of our two theme songs at NAF Cam Ranh Bay, with a few minor modifications to the lyrics. The other theme song was, of course, "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" by the Animals.
