Montgomery Co. Considering Gas Tax

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. -- It could become more expensive to own a car or buy gas in Montgomery County.

Local officials are considering adding a gas tax of 15 cents per gallon, along with surtaxes on fees for vehicle registrations and titles.

The new charges were floated by the fiscal policy committee of the Montgomery County Council.

A recent study found the county could raise $75 million a year with the tax.

If the taxes were adopted, Montgomery County would be the only county in Maryland to impose a gas tax.
