How long did the Rochester hostage situation last?
At what time did the Rochester, N.H. hostage taker take the hostages, and at what time did he let the first one go? How much time elapsed from the beginning of the hostage taking to the end?

1. Six hours, total, more or less. The first young lady and her infant were let go
immediately, because the others persuaded the guy to let them go because of the small child.

She ran and got help as soon as she got outta there.

2. I know it is disgustingly cynical of me, but I guess it ended just
right to hit prime time news.

3. I dunno. It kinda ended DURING the news, depending on your market.
Here in New England, it was an all-day affair on the local regional cable news, as well as the New Hampshire tee vee outlet that I get in northern MA.

I think the fact that the guy ran out of cigarettes and wanted some booze might have played a part. He probably smoked the whole pack they sent in to him in exchange for a hostage...

I don't think this guy was 'paid' to do anything, if that is your sense. He has a long public record of altercations with the police, and a documented history of mental illness.

5. His "pay" was not monetary. He is an attention-seeker.

4. Not at all cynical. He planned it that way.
Ripe for prime time news! Gave up precisely when the national nightly news was about to begin.

What timing! Impressive! Pretty good timing for a 3 day drunk! :P

6. Well, there WAS no news in NH. It was preempted for continuous coverage of this business. NT

7. There was lots of coverage in MA also but

WCVB continued coverage of the hostage situation until 7 PM and then went to the national
news @ 7 PM but WBZ Channel 4, Channel 7 and Faux Channel 25 went to news at 6 PM. But of
course the big news was this situation. It was a top story nationally too.

Don't you get any stations out of Boston?

8. Channel Nine in NH stayed with it straight through...
I get all of the Boston stations, and some NH as well.
