Your Reaction to DePalma's film "Redacted"?
Edited on Sat Nov-17-07 05:39 PM by Mike03
Apparently "Redacted" is being screened or shown on cable, and it would be interesting to get some reaction to Brian DePalma's film about the hideous rape/murder of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and the pitiless slaughter of her entire family.

DePalma has a splotchy record of important but also failed films. In 1987 or thereabouts he directed "Casualties of War," which had nearly an identical theme of a demoralized and dehumanized squad in VietNam abducting, raping and killing a Vietnamese girl.

If you have seen "Redacted", what did you think?

Is it an important work, or an exploitative work?

Is it tasteful, horrifying or merely salacious?

Is it overtly political and, more importantly, is it effective?

Comments appreciated.

EDIT:

Abeer Qasim Hamza was her name. I thought it was proper to put her name in the post, since most Americans don't know it but ought to.

1. I would compare it to "Schindler's List"...

since it brings out very strong emotions that are extremely relevant to the historical events being portrayed. It may be exploiting a few isolated events, but the overall theme is extremely relevant when you look at the statistics of what is happening to the soldiers and the pressures they are under.

2. That's good news: it's hard to beat Schindler's List on many
points, especially relevance and impact. Thanks for the opinion.

4. Your welcome, it also seems to borrow from "Full Metal Jacket"...

Kubrick and De Palma are two of my favorite directors. De Palma also effectively used the theme from "Barry Lyndon".

15. Schindler's List? So, does that make the American soldiers the Nazi's?

17. No, not at all!

Perhaps the Administration though. If you'd watch the film you'd realize that the soldiers are victims as well.

On edit: Hitler seems to have treated the SS much more humanely.

6. Cable or maybe Satellite.
I just remember on DU the other night, someone posted that it was playing on some station that I was unfamiliar with. I'll try to search back and post if I can find it.

8. It was produced by HDNet cable channel, and the preview is being shown there....
Edited on Sat Nov-17-07 06:22 PM by AntiFascist
It is supposed to start playing in theaters soon, I think. Funny, I can't seem to find much info on their website. Bill O'Rielly went so far as to say that Mark Cuban should be shot for producing it, but KO really came to Cuban's defense!

On edit: here's the website http://www.redactedmovie.com/

hehehe, notice the quote by Bill O'really!

11. Good for HDNet for producing this film.
DePalma has had a hard time locating a financier since "Mission to Mars".

That is really good news that a project of this importance would or even could find an executive producer.

As for O'Reilly, I couldn't even give a shit. De Palma is a giant, and that little moronic screw-headed pervert Bill O'Reilly is not even a gnat on the ass of a cow chewing its cud on the bank of the Grand Canyon.

9. The republicans are making a big deal about
all the so called liberal anti Iraq films failing at the box office. I as well as most of the people who boycott them, are sick and tired of the Iraq war and want it to end, we don't want to go see pictures however made about it. Not because people want to see kick ass films instead.

10. I read that the original had been edited, despite DePalma's protest.

None the less, I look forward to seeing it.
Figures the Pentagon/Hollywood relationship would impact and
censor the US viewing version of the film.

Dirtbag corporates infiltrate and abound though out American culture as well.
Nothing is sacred.

13. Of course the RWing is attacking this film.
The film obviously does not promote their Oil War.

The preview had a lot of disturbing images at the end. Arrrg, I should have recorded it.

14. check out the "fan reviews" on fandango, like any of these aholes even saw the film?
http://www.fandango.com/movies/1/moviefanreviews.aspx?mid=110228&

i hate that, see it first and then decide, reminds me of people that say "No i don't like (insert food here)" and of course they've never tried it.

I have not seen the film but plan to when it hopefully gets to my area.
