From the excerpts in Tour of Duty it was far more a collection of what his thoughts and feelings were. They seemed remarkably honest in describing his reactions to the circumstances he was in. Some came close to the poignant question he asked the Senate. Other passages were surprisingly beautiful, almost poetic.

The fact of the matter is that nothing in the journal could change the "facts" about the claims made in the SBVT books and ads.

All of Kerry's records - including those for the time period requested were on his web site for over a year. There problem there is the right wing's bizarre assumption that Kerry got a dishonorable discharge from the INACTIVE reserves. It would seem that the Vietnam era Secretary of the Navy might in the 1970s would know that - he, aka Senator Warner praised Senator Kerry's service on the Senate floor. The fact is that there are real questions in Bush's records, but not Kerry's.

As to the tapes, in 2003 or 2004, Kerry showed all of them to Bill Keller, editor of the NYT to dispute idiotic claims that he tried to "re-create battles on the tapes". In fact, we all saw the same footage of a smiling Kerry walking towards the camera - not threatening at all in 2004 - apparently there is little footage with Kerry in it. Apparently, he mostly filmed the boats (not when they were in the narrow canals) and the scenery of Vietnam.

This type of case has been tested in court before, and the courts have ruled that if you make a deal to pay money in a case like this, you have to pay it out if someone meets your conditions.
