Sorry, Jesus, But You're Out
I hate to be the one to break it to you, Jesus, but it looks like you’re pretty well out of a job. Your followers have decided to replace you with someone more in keeping with the times, and the times apparently call for a new, improved Savior - one who is okay with torture, adores a good war, and just generally kicks butt.

Let’s face it, Lord, it’s not like you didn’t have a good run. Two thousand years is nothin’ to sneeze at in the Son of God business. But the whole Prince of Peace shtick just ain’t going over as well as it used to back in the day.

These Christians we got nowadays don’t want to hear about turning the other cheek, being thy brother’s keeper, loving thy neighbor, yadda, yadda. They’re just not into that Do Unto Others thing, and would much rather have a Do Unto Yourself kind of credo, if you get my drift.

What they want to hear is that accumulating personal wealth was part of your divine plan all along. They want to get on their cellphone and order a Green Prayer Cloth of Prosperity to place on their Bible as they pray for that promotion-plus-raise-plus-stock-options – and know that if they act now, they can get two for the price of one donation. They want to hear that things like hating Muslims, homosexuals and Liberals were only left out of the Commandments because your Dad could only fit ten on the tablets, and inadvertently left off the really important stuff.

So what they’ve done is they’ve come up with a new Jesus, one created in their own image and likeness. (How’s that for irony?) And because the new kid on the cross is willing to see things their way, he’s catching on with the Fundies like a burning Bush (ha, ha, made you laugh!)

Yeah, this New Jesus is something else again. You won’t catch him blessin’ the Peacemakers and talking about that goodwill towards men crap (although I understand that if the New Jesus preaches forgiveness for adulterers and fornicators, especially if they happen to be elected-to-office Republicans, that’s appreciated).

Yes, sir, this New Jesus is ready to rock. If people on the other side of the world stand in the way of good Christians having the oil they need to get their Mercedes to church on Sunday, well screw ‘em. If sick kids are going to be a drain on taxpayers’ dollars, screw ‘em. If the workers are going to start demanding decent wages, screw ‘em.

And for God’s sake (no disrespect intended), let’s hear some positive parables about how the money-changers in the temple were really the good guys, and how that eye of a needle that rich men have to pass though to get into heaven is actually big enough to accommodate an SUV, fully loaded!

You see where this is going, Jesus? (Being all-seeing and all-knowing, I kinda figured you might.) You’re just an acoustic guitar with a simple lyric about brotherhood and compassion in a world of fix-it-in-the-mix muzak for the masses.

Now, I don’t want to say you’re out of business entirely. You still got some people down here who believe in you just the way you are – that is, just the way you’ve always been, before the mega-rich preachers in the mega-churches started advertising a more pliable Savior with a more palatable agenda.

Hey, don't get me wrong, Jesus. Your real fans are still out there. If you don’t hear them cheering as loudly as you used to, it’s just because they’re being drowned out by the megachurch megaphones blaring hatred and bigotry from every corner, selling this New Jesus who will do their bidding.

Sorry to be the bearer of these bad tidings, but if you’re going to insist on sticking with that as you do to the least among you, so you do unto Me act, it seems you’re going to have to start getting used to playing to smaller crowds.

13. I wonder what would happen
if Fox decided to end the series 24, by throwing Jack Bauer on a cross and killing him off? Would everyone start worshipping Keifer Sutherland instead? He'd be a pretty kickass lord and savior. They could even do a holiday special where he is resurrected and gives a "sermon on your ass" at Guantanamo with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch. Ratings gold I tell you, for both advertisers and churches alike.

Nice post by the way. ;)

56. But why would they go after Jack Bauer?
It's not as if the torture - which he commits on an hourly basis - is not fully sanctioned now.

Any chance Faux developed that show to intentionally raise the bloodlust of all the closet neocon facists? Nah, THEY wouldn't do THAT.

How do they sleep at night? I'm not a Christian (more like a nonpracticing heathen) but I find myself longing for a return of the Old Jesus (old Coke?) to the temple. Time once again to tip the tables of the money changers (in today's incarnation, the war profiteers and 'profit from misery' class).

I believe they actually sleep very well. They are people without a conscious or care. Yes, they believe in God and Jesus, but they never said they follow them as evil does not do that. For the record, I'm not calling anybody who doesn't believe in God or Jesus's existence to be evil. I am saying that just because one says they do believe does not make them Godly or religious or good as what's in one's heart determines that. This isn't always easilly seen by us and makes for deceit to be possible.
In my opinion, and know that this is not directed at anybody on the thread, it is not a difficult task for me to see where those in the bush administrations and most of the republican party along with some dinos thrown in as well come from and if you are ever in doubt then just look at the result. None of what they do is good. Those that follow or support this evil are usually evil themselves. Do know that most of those that are evil do not believe themselves to be evil strangely enough, but beware of the ones that do know they're evil and they continue that path.
BTW Nancy, again a very good post.

Yours is a theme that has rolled around in my mind since the beginning of The GWB Coronation. Our mainstream media confused me, particularly when they went on that Republican=Christian sainthood kick. Where did Jesus fit in? Who would he bomb? Which Iraqi child would he incarcerate? Which billionaire would he give a tax break to? So many questions, so little time.

49. Not me.
I have no use for it personally, and I hate what it is (ab)used for,
but I have nothing against it per se, or anyone who really believes,
no matter what religion it is. The line is crossed when anyone tries
to tell me they know better than I do what I or anyone else should
believe. That agnostic bumper sticker said it perfectly for me:
"I don't know and you don't either."

Believe what you want and go in peace. Tell me, or anyone else, that they
should believe the same thing, and that peace is broken.

It's ever-interesting to me, how Jesus railed endlessly against hypocrisy, yet today it seems all his truest believers are hypocrites of the highest order!

They sure-as-shit knew how to celebrate his 2000th birthday, huh? Nothin' Jesus would enjoy more than another series of idiotic, pathetically unimaginative wars and pogroms!

64. This is good
So true. There are so many hypocrites out there calling themselves Christian, without in the least acting like it. They seem oblivious to the fact that some of their political positions are directly contradicted in Jesus' teachings. When they use the term "Christian nation" it is possibly used as an ethnic term, meant to obfuscate their identity they are trying to describe - persons of European descent.

66. Another great one, Ms. Greggs!!!
Thanks for this posting Ms. Greggs.

Question: Where can you find this statement: "If a man strikes you on the cheek, smash him in the other"? (Answer below)

You are 100% correct in addressing that this is not the Lord's problem, but rather His followers.

My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, would be appalled at the behavior of "His people." (While I am not one to judge, this is why He gave the parable of the Sheep and the Goats.)

I for one will always Think Hebrew, which is largely espoused by the Progressives in the modern world.

By the way, the answer to the question above is: The Satanic Bible.

Which do you think the majority of the Lord's followers is espousing: The Bible or the Satanic Bible? (Hint: Think of the USA Patriot Acts I and II as well as the Bush Doctrine.)

Just a question...

ASKED ABOUT HIS ROOTS IN SILVERSPOON KENNY-BUNK-PORT, PRESIDENT DUBYA STOOD IN FRONT OF HIS PICKUP TRUCK CLEARING BRUSH, AND DRAWLED...NOPE.... BORN RIGHT HERE IN CRAWFORD... BEEN A CRAWFORD MAN ALL MY LIFE... AND A LOT OF IGNORANT PEOPLE HAVE HEARD I WAS BORN IN A LOG CABIN... SPIN... THATS ALL IT IS... JUST SPIN... EVERYONE KNOWS I WAS BORN IN A MANGER.

------ BY THE WAY... I NOTICED THAT THE FUN-DUH-MENTALS ARE CHANGING THEIR STORY AND ACCEPTANCE OF DIVORCE..... USED TO BE "NO WAY" NOW THEY HAVE "RE-INTERPRETED THE PASSAGE" THAT IT REALLY SAYS "UNLESS YOU MARRIED A COUSIN, OR GOT TIRED OF THE BITCH, OR ARE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT"

NOW MAYBE I DON'T GET IT... BUT MY SPIDER-SENSES ARE SAYING THAT WHEN THEY FINALLY DECIDE THAT THEY NEED THE GAY VOTE THERE WILL BE SOME "RE-INTERPRETING OF THE PASSAGES" IN THAT AREA AS WELL.

71. well done again
You go Nance.

& have no fears. Jesus is out there taking all this in, planning his big move. Won't be too long now. He has a lot of saints & angels & prophets & chosen people to organize, plus some personal affairs to take care of. All in due time I figure. In the meantime we must do what we can, and make sure our own foundations are taken care of.

Be well.

84. Oh, perfect for dispelling the meme of a war on Christianity.
Christianity is under attack, but part of that attack comes from within and the people complaining will not admit it nor even see its possibility.

Finally, someone who may actually help Democrats with religions. Thank you.

86. great stuff but...
Since when did Christianity mean anything OTHER than war on other people, religions and nations?

Was there really ever a time when it didn't represent hate?

Okay, so this is more about Jesus than Christianity. What I find so ironic is that (never read it but so I've heard) Jesus is supposed to be all about love and such... and then the Christians, in his name, are all about hate.

My own sister, who is a very nice person, a good person. She's even a paramedic. She is a strong believer and yet she has problems with her own daughter being gay. She considers all other religions at the least wrong and possibly evil.

I have been telling myself for years that a person's beliefs are their own. I must stick to that in order to defend my OWN beliefs. However, I browsed through a book a while back, I don't remember the name but it was one of those new atheism authors, that mentioned how religion is basically all about war and that when religions work to destroy other religions or kill other people or bring about fanaticism such as is happening in the world, you simply can't say "it has the right to exist."

Not when it's responsible for the murder/death of so many people.

While Jesus may have been all about love, it doesn't seem to me that the religion as a whole has ever taken that part to heart.

87. I know PLENTY of real Christians....
Ok... I can count them on two hands, but they are the genuine article. Peaceful to the core, kind, generous, nonjudgemental, and highly forgiving.

I think Nance basically nailed what's happened. Religion starts with a potent, altruistic message. In most cases, it becomes corrupted in the hands of humans and used to turn people's will to their ends.

We cannot kill religion with violence, it is the greatest folly of any militant belief and begets unending cycles of death. Belief must be dealt with through ideas, and Christ's message, however authentic, is one of the most powerful anti-conflict ideas ever. How it became so very twisted in the hands of men is a story of immeasurable shame and failure.

88. "While Jesus may have been all about love, it doesn't ...
... seem to me that the religion as a whole has ever taken that part to heart."

It's true, organized Christian "religions" have failed miserably in taking Christ's message to heart.

However, many individuals have.

I've heard several Constitutional scholars speak about how separation of Church and State was not only meant to protect government from the influences of religion, but also to protect religion from the influence of government.

This is exactly what has happened to the Fundie-types of 'christians' over the past, especially during the Bush administration.

So-called christians have been encouraged to reinvent their role model, Jesus, so that he conforms to the political agenda being espoused by people like G.W. Bush, whose agenda is in turn being supported by their religious leaders.

The legendary Jesus, who preached selflessness and a commitment to the welfare of our fellow human beings, just doesn't fit with the sanction of war, torture, and a disdain for those less fortunate.

So given a choice between Bush and Jesus, it was obvious who had to be sent packing.

The current crop of pseudo-christians want more than anything to be told that their coveting of the Almighty Dollar is not evil or contrary to the word of God - therefore, it was much more expedient (and acceptable) to simply discard the Jesus of lore and replace him with someone more flexible ...

94. Kind of ironic, ain't it,
that capitalism emerged out of perceived "permissions" within Calvinist theology? Somewhere, somehow, "...if you lend a man your cloak, give him your coat as well" got turned into "gimme an inch and I'll take a mile, and yours too, while I'm at it!"

I really want to share this with my family when we convene (I return) after a five year absence this Thanksgiving. I was raised on the myths of the "first" Jesus. There's been plenty of snake oil peddled in his name. I managed to hold on to the myth.

In these times it's not so simple. While I try to pursue the ideals of the myth, the idea of a supreme being that can perform an act of god with dire consequences, but is more or less impotent when it comes to an intervention that could save humanity, I have my doubts about the whole religion thing.

I still think that I know what is the right thing to do. And actually, that's not the issue. What's right for me is probably not right for every citizen. There's that democracy thing again.
