Los Angeles police plan to map Muslims

LOS ANGELES - Civil rights advocates criticized plans by the Los Angeles Police Department to map the city's Muslim communities, calling it racial profiling.

The LAPD's counterterrorism bureau plans to identify Muslim enclaves in order to determine which might be likely to become isolated and susceptible to "violent, ideologically based extremism," said Deputy Chief Michael P. Downing on Thursday.

"We want to know where the Pakistanis, Iranians and Chechens are so we can reach out to those communities," said Downing, who heads the counterterrorism bureau.

Downing said the plan is still in its early stages, but the LAPD wants to work with a Muslim partner and intends to have the data assembled by the University of Southern California's Center for Risk and Economic Analysis.

And the further you get into rural Missouri, the worse it gets. I'm just commenting on the fact that LAPD seems to be involved in some over the top racist incident on a very regular basis.

Weird how things like due process, habeas corpus, racism and xenophobia all seem to go out the window when the subject is Muslims, especially people of color who are Muslims.

And the fact that there is no outright fucking rage against this is all the more telling.

There is outrage in LA over this religious and racial profiling. It is on the street and in the "alternative" (to LA Times) newspapers. Even under two African-American police chiefs (Williams and Parks)the racism is still bad both in the department and on the streets (Nobody has bothered to implement the Christopher Commission recommendations for changing this).
When we read this we wanted police profiling.. in Simi Valley, Ventura and Orange county. Hey... the police do not live where they are policing... they live in predominantly white, middle class neighborhoods...

In my area of LA County most of the sheriffs are people of "color" and live in our area... but this is unusual
