Here's what happens when they say the container ship that hit the San Francisco Bay Bridge yesterday leaked 140 gallons of fuel when in fact, they were off by "only" 58,000 gallons.

And the shit is already hitting the fan, as the environmental disaster in SF grows by the hour.

Is there anything we do right in this country?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(11-08) 17:30 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- Heavy-duty bunker fuel oil has washed up on beaches throughout the San Francisco and Marin coastlines all day, leaving purplish sheens on the water, ugly black blobs in the sand, and hundreds of injured or dead birds.

Some 9,500 gallons of oil have been contained since a container ship rammed the Bay Bridge and spilled 58,000 gallons of its fuel Wednesday morning, U.S. Coast Guard Capt. William Uberti said this afternoon. But as he spoke, questions were swirling about why it took so long for emergency officials to contain the mess - and who will be to blame for the environmental disaster building by the hour.

1. There had to be a reason the CG said that; they were either told
that or miscalculated greatly, but I doubt they were out to deceive anyone. Hey, I have to defend Coasties; there are too many in my family not to.

2. It is very difficult to find a reason to get mad at the USCG
After all, they are the only military branch that actually saves lives over taking them.

So I will wait for more info before blaming the USCG for this.

6. Technically the National Guard isn't one of the uniformed branches.
But they do a tremendous service.

7. I don't think anyone tried to deceive anyone babylon,
and I didn't mean to make it sound like I'm blaming the entire Coast Guard.

But it appears the San Francisco Coast Guard, which is ironically docked right next to the Bay Bridge, dropped the ball.

According San Francisco city officials, that just appears to be a fact, despite all of the great rescue work they do.

3. What a sad mess we are in, and I can't blame the CG for it.
