MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan (Reuters) -

A suicide bomber killed 90 people and wounded 50 on Tuesday in an attack on a delegation of visiting
parliamentarians in the northern Afghan town of Baghlan, the director of the local hospital said.

"The bodies of 90 people have been brought to the hospital so far and 50 people have been wounded,"
Baghlan hospital director Dr. Khalilullah told Reuters.

Five parliamentarians, including opposition spokesman Mostafa Kazemi, were among those killed, the
provincial governor said. Baghlan's intelligence chief, Abdurrahman Sayedkhail, said the number of
casualties was so high it was impossible to give an accurate number for now.

"I saw bodies lying in the streets and some of the people were stealing the weapons of the dead soldiers.
Children are screaming for help. It's like a nightmare," said local resident Mohammad Rahim who said the blast
had killed his two cousins, both schoolgirls.

The attack took place as the delegation was visiting a sugar factory in the industrial part of the town of Baghlan.
Large crowds of residents and schoolchildren crowded the visiting parliamentarians who were on an economic
fact-finding mission.

Northern Afghanistan has escaped much of the violence which has wracked other parts of the country since the
Taliban relaunched their insurgency against the Kabul government and the 50,000 foreign troops in the country.

The hardline Islamist Taliban have killed more than 200 people in more than 130 suicide attacks so far this year
in a campaign of violence aimed at convincing Afghans their government and its Western backers are incapable
of providing security.

OTTAWA, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) --

Canada's Defense Minister Peter MacKay was under fire Tuesday when the Canadian military base
near Kandahar he was visiting was attacked by two Taliban rockets, local media reported.

MacKay was unhurt during the attacks on the forward operating base located 20 kilometers west of
Kandahar, a reporter for national newspaper "Globe and Mail" said from the southern Afghan city.

After the first rocket landed around 11 a.m. local time, MacKay was taken into an armored vehicle
and transported to Kandahar air field shortly.

Four soldiers were lightly injured when the second rocket hit 15 minutes later.

It was unclear if the Taliban had any idea about MacKay's visit, the reporter said.

MacKay, who is in Afghanistan to trumpet Canada's achievements there, said he will continue the visit.

Canada has 2,500 troops stationed in Afghanistan.

MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan (Reuters) -

A suicide attack on a parliamentary delegation killed at least 50 people in northern Afghanistan
on Tuesday, a provincial official said, in the worst such blast in the country's history.

Five members of the Afghan parliament were among the dead and the toll was expected to rise.
Schoolchildren were also among the victims in the town of Baghlan in the north of the country
which had so far escaped the worst of Afghanistan's worsening violence.

"We have recorded 50 people dead so far, but there are still bodies on the streets we have not
counted and some of the dead have already been taken away by their relatives," Baghlan provincial
security chief Abdurrahman Sayedkhail told Reuters.
