and reflecting back I think I've had a lot of people in my life who were taught religions and religious beliefs but also understood them to be mythical -- so there's a lot in this realm that I think still has to be worked thru.

There are people I remember because of their spirits ---
they are important to me and have had the most effect on me ---
even people I've never known, but where I've been inspired thru biographies, etal ---

Eleanor Roosevelt, I guess is one of those people -- she would have been the first --
except for my family.

Being loved within a family is a spiritual experience -- IMO.

I don't hurt people intentionally, but I haven't devoted my life to actively helping others, either. I don't count my (relatively small) donations to charity to be all that virtuous.

I was raised without religion and would describe myself as an atheist. I expect my morality is a combination of what I was born with and what my parents instilled in me.

38. Hmm... well, in the broader sort of "social justice" sense, I suppose

I picked it up from the writings of people who are concerned with such things, as well as from my dad's union activism. He was a devoted union man and went out of his way to explain to me why people with less have to stick together.

Though I'm not religious myself, I've had a number of friends who were devout members of various faiths (Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, and Sikhs) and I've always enjoyed talking with them about their religions. They all seem to share a similar principle at their core that I like, which is basically just "help people who need it and don't be a dick".

That recognition of the greater good and duty to community is as close as I come to spirituality, so I'll call it that. :P

I remember, as a very very young child, hearing things that were mean spirited, unfair, bigoted, etc. and knowing that it was "wrong". There may have been influences further back than my memory goes, but I have always had the basic values I do now.

I have gained strength and peace at times from the examples of others, but the "knowing' was always there...
