Pentagon requests funding for 30,000-pound "mother of all bunker busters" in $42 billion request

http://blog.wired.com/defense/2007/10/giant-bomb-bio-.html

Like previous pleas for more war money, the Pentagon has slipped a couple of items into this new, $42 billion request that are... well, questionable at best. Like protection against biological and chemical weapons -- even though there are none to be found in either Afghanistan or iraq.

Protection against Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Explosives (CBRNE) threats is still of critical importance in a fight against a cunning and adaptive enemy. While we have not experienced a CBRNE attack in Iraq or Afghanistan, the enduring danger of such an attack requires that the Department be prepared for such situations. Thus, this Amendment request includes $69 million for protection and detection equipment to protect American and Coalition forces from chemical, biological, and radiological weapons.

And does the American military really intend to drop the 30,000-pound "mother of all bunker busters" -- the so-called "Massive Ordnance Penetrator" -- on insurgents?

The Replenishment category also includes $0.3 billion for the development of specific technologies to improve the survivability of U.S. personnel and equipment. This includes funding for the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) for use on the B-2 bomber.

1. I've always thought a "bunker buster" could have the same effect as a firecracker,...
,...in a closed hand.

I cried for three days when congress approved funding the new nuke bunker busters. The war profiteers have portrayed these damn things as mini-nukes,...like, somehow, they would be less destructive therefore more desirable weapons of mass destruction.

It's a fact this country has enough weapons of mass destruction to destroy the earth several times over. Any further development and production is just a fucking waste of resources. Any further funding is revolting.

2. NOOOOOOOO!
We need bridges to nowhere more than we need more godamned weapons of mass destruction.

4. That makes sense
This way, if a Democratic-controlled Congress votes to deny them funds
in the future, they can just use one of these thing to make the Capitol
go away, along with everybody in it.
