Have I got this right? Is this arrogant motherfucker the guy who saw his company grow from .......
..... a few hundred thousand in fees before the Iraq war to hundreds of millions today?

Erik Prince/Blackwater CEO

He's essentially sitting before a Congressional committee and being as arrogant and disrespectful as anyone I've ever seen.

Mr. Prince, you win the Prick of the Week Award.

You deserve a long prison spell. As to your prior military service as a US Navy Seal ..... fuck it. You've DISearned any respect you may have thought you garnered.

You Arrogant Motherfucker.

114. He is Dick (DeVoid) DeVos' brother-in-law.
DeVos ran for Governor of Michigan last election. He is Mr. Amway-aka SCAMway.

RICH repukers!!!

"The DeVos family's contributions to Republican causes over the past 15 years is almost legendary.

Led by patriarch Rich DeVos, whose personal wealth has been estimated at $3.5 billion, the family has supported some of the largest, most influential conservative and Christian organizations in the U.S. - and given some of the biggest political donations.

DeVos and Jay VanAndel cofounded the Amway Corp. in Ada, near Grand Rapids, in 1959. The company was based on a direct-sales network marketing home and personal care products.

Amway, its parent company, Alticor and their family owners have given at least $7.5 million to federal campaigns since 1990. All of it went to Republicans and most was soft money - cash or assets given to political action committees or parties and not directly to candidates or their committees."

41. Actually, I didn't notice arrogance and I was looking for it --
obviously, he feels secure -- but I'm not sure totally secure.

If you wanted to see "arrogance" -- frightening arrogance -- it was the official who came in the morning after the Exxon Valdez . . . . whoa

Not only arrogant but his demeanor kind of said . . . . "I'll be here and all of you people will be gone."

Granted -- the whole mercenary thing stinks --
the message is these guys won't serve in our own military -- we don't pay enough?

but the message is clear: No one wants to serve in our military unless forced into it by poverty or stupidity!!!

I'm wondering if mercenaries are even more dangerous for us than a DRAFT?

79. "I'm wondering if mercenaries are even more dangerous for us than a DRAFT?"
Absolutely!

I grew up in the era of the draft and it was not nearly as onerous as some would have us believe. Even with VN in full swing, most draftees served their two years, never saw combat, then got out. And most draftees served well and honorably. The draft was not the cause of the disasters in the military in the 60s - it was fighting an unjust war that made for a lousy, demoralized military. Just like today.

Mercenaries, OTOH, are answerable only to the bucks, and the guy who pays them. As someone noted above, it would not be DHS or INS who will be running detention camps in the US - it will be Blackwater or one of their ilk. Mercenaries not responsible to the government or the public, but to their commander, who may be Prince, or some guy who thinks he is a prince. No accountability.

They claim to be American patriots, but so did the murderers of The Order.

81. Wonderful comments --
Rightly, when you can't raise a military to fight a war, that should be the end of it --
and this "private" way to run a war should be stopped --

Where did they get the authority to do this?
I guess the founders didn't think to prohibit it?

141. I didn't say it was no big deal. I said it wasn't as big a deal as
it is now made out to be.

I was raised as a civilian-military brat, and a high percentage of people I was aquainted with growing up were draftees. And those I knew in my years on Navy or AF bases, many enlisted in those services to avoid being drafted. A lot of those draftees, and enlistees, went on to become lifers. I, myself, had a high draft number, but enlisted in the Marines three years later after dropping out of college. I am not unfamiliar with the concept of the draft.

If you are old enough to have been drafted for VN, then you must remember the mindset of the days before VN. Being drafted in the 50s and early 60s meant taking a couple years out, maybe going to Europe or Japan, then coming home. Everybody did it. Even Elvis. The tragedy of the draft was not in being forced to serve, but in being forced to serve in an illegal war, travelling to distant lands to kill people who never offended us. It wasn't the draft that was intrinsically wrong, it was the war. If the draft itself was the problem, there would have been millions on the streets in WW2, when ten times the VN numbers were drafted.

I'm just saying that there are problems with a draft if the cause is wrong, but the problem is not with the quality of soldiers it produces. And without a draft we must figure out how to deal with a military that is powerful enough to defend us OR to seize power for itself, which a conscript military could never be counted on to do because they are us. I was raised around our military, and served in the military, but today a part of me fears our military - something I never expected.

43. Why not be arrogant when Bushco is telling him he's got nothing to worry about.
I think we all know by now absolutely nothing will come of this, except that this guy will either receive a coveted ambassadorship/billions more in contracts/a medal signifying one of the highest honors in the land/will decide to campaign to become a Senator or Congressman and will coast to victory with the blessings of the NRA.

48. Erik's connection to Dick DeVos
If you follow Michigan politics you know we had a Republican running for governor named Dick DeVos. His father started Amway (many call it Scamway). Luckily, the voters of my state rejected him in favor of Jennifer Granholm. His wife had previously been the head of the Republican party in Michigan. She said at one time that, “the problem with Michigan is that people make too much money here.” Spoken like a true multi-billionaire. Her maiden name is Prince and she has a brother named Erik who owns a company called Blackwater. Erik went to Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, MI, perhaps the most conservative college in the country.

Dick DeVos:
Major donor to right-wing politicians

DeVos political connections have been equally well nurtured by DeVos money. DeVos family political contributions totaled more than $2.3 million in 2003 and 2004, including more than $1.8 million to party committees in Michigan. In 1998, DeVos founded Restoring the American Dream, a PAC that funded right-wing Republicans, anti-choice PACs, and other Republican PACs. In all, the PAC gave a total of $465,955 to Republican candidates over four election cycles (from 1998 to 2000).<14>

The Board of Advisors of the PAC includes DeVos's father, Rich DeVos; rejected Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork; Tom Monahan, Domino's pizza founder and a prominent anti-choice activist; and former Reps. Steve Largent (R-OK) and J.C Watts (R-OK).

As important as these contributions are to the Republican Party, they pale in comparison to the history of corporate contributions of the Amway Corporation. Up until the time new campaign finance laws changed so-called "soft" money rules that allowed unlimited corporate donations to political parties, Amway was one of the largest contributors of soft money to the Republican Party and GOP candidates. According to the watchdog group Common Cause, Amway and affiliated donors made soft money contributions to the RNC totaling $4,147,000 between January 1, 1991, and June 30, 1997.<15>

In the 2000 national election, Amway was the second largest contributor of soft money to the Republican party. Amway has helped Republican candidates in other ways as well. For example, that same year, the George W. Bush campaign used Amway's voicemail network to broadcast its message to tens of thousands of Amway/Quixtar distributors with a "personal voicemail message" from Bush.<16>

In 2004, Amway donors gave heavily to newly created 527s helping to fund groups like the ultra-conservative, anti-tax group "Progress for America." In addition to their donations to this and other groups in 2004, the Amway/Alticor Inc PAC directly donated $30,000 to Republicans running for federal office. So far this year, the AmWay/Alticor PAC has again directly donated $13,800 to Republicans. In recent years, the PAC has been funded exclusively by the DeVos family and executives of the two corporations.<17>

Turns out Joseph Schmitz, COO & general counsel of the Prince Group, Blackwater's parent company, is married to one Lucila Garnica Gallo, Colomba Bush's sister (Jeb Bush's wife).

Prince is noted for disliking having his photo taken and distributed; he often uses his hands to shield himself from photographers. While attending a technology conference in North Carolina, he was visibly uncomfortable when photographed on stage and officials asked that the images not be published.<2> Some have claimed that this is due to fear of terrorist reprisals for his role in creating Blackwater USA.<2>

Waxman said ...."that Blackwater has received more than $1 billion in federal contracts since 2001, mostly from the State Department and more than half that amount "without full and open competition." While a U.S. sergeant costs the government $50,000 to $70,000 a year, he said, a Blackwater staff member with a comparable position costs more than $400,000."

"the panel's Republicans generally defended the company and the role of private security contractors in Iraq."

I am a Canadian and the only good Bush Republican or Harper Conservative is one behind bars. These people are treasonous scum.

We both have plenty of house cleaning to do.

I love it this is really juicy!

"Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) blasted the majority staff
report for mentioning the Republican ties of Prince and his
family. The report noted that Prince's father was a prominent
Michigan businessman who contributed to conservative causes,
that his sister formerly chaired the Michigan Republican Party
and earned the title of "pioneer" for her
fundraising in Bush's 2004 campaign and that his
brother-in-law was the 2006 GOP nominee for governor of
Michigan. Issa charged that committee Democrats were trying to
tar the Blackwater chief executive as a political
partisan."

The truth hurts doesn't it!!!!!

The lapdog Republicans make me sick how they support this criminal who has fleeced the TAX PAYERS, and his protected his employees who have killed innocent woman and children in Iraq and left his own employees exposed to dangers.

Just when I think Republicans can't sink lower, they do it again. How shameful for their constituants.

If he continues to grow richer, he could conceivably acquire an army big enough to challenge the actual US Army. Then what is to stop him from a military coup?

This is one of the most dangerous threats to our nation since the Civil War.

The Man From Blackwater, Shooting From the Lip

By Dana Milbank

Like the company he founded, defense contractor Erik Prince doesn't seem to answer to anybody.

His security business, Blackwater, has been involved in at least 195 shootings in Iraq -- but it has operated outside U.S. and Iraqi laws. Similarly, when Prince made a rare public appearance before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee yesterday, he acted as if the lawmakers were wasting his time.

How much does Blackwater, recipient of $1 billion in federal contracts, make in profits? "We're a private company, and there's a key word there -- private," Prince answered.

What about the 2004 crash of a Blackwater plane in Afghanistan, when federal investigators said the pilots acted unprofessionally? "Accidents happen," Prince explained.

The lack of prosecution for a drunken Blackwater worker who shot and killed a security guard to an Iraqi vice president? "We can't flog him," Prince said.

The high wages for Blackwater security guards? "They're not showing up at the job naked," Prince reasoned.

What's more, Prince said, "I believe we acted appropriately at all times." It was a bold statement for a man whose company is being probed by the FBI for the killing of 11 Iraqis in Baghdad last month -- but Prince, a former Navy Seal, was a cool performer.

The 38-year-old scion of a car-parts magnate, Prince wore his blond hair in a military cut and tapped his pen as he fielded questions of those war critics who would turn Blackwater into another Halliburton. Asked if he needed a break before the final two questioners, Prince replied: "If there's two questions left, I'll take them and then let's be done."

Prince argued that Blackwater was merely doing in Iraq what the State Department hired it to do -- and if there's a problem with the arrangement, it's a lack of rules governing private contractors. In making this case, he was aided by aimless questioning by some Democrats; Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D.C.) thought it necessary to ask Prince about Blackwater's 401(k) plan, and Rep. Diane Watson (Calif.) went on a tear about Rush Limbaugh.

Republicans, meanwhile, proved content to shill for a major donor. Prince's father helped to bankroll the religious-conservative movement, and his sister, Betsy DeVos, is a big Republican fundraiser who married into the Amway fortune. Prince himself has given $236,000 to GOP candidates and conservative causes -- typical of a defense contracting industry that, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, gave nearly $1 million to members of the oversight committee since 2003 -- 83 percent of it to Republicans.

"Blackwater will be held accountable today!" vowed Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), who has received only $6,300 from defense contractors over the past 17 years.

"Blackwater appears to have fostered a culture of shoot first . . . and then ask the questions," trumpeted Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), whose career contributions from defense interests tally a mere $1,200.

Republicans took a more favorable view of their benefactor.

"We should take care not to prejudge," said Tom Davis of Virginia ($717,829).

"We should not be holding this hearing," protested John Mica of Florida ($145,454). "Therefore, I move that the committee do now adjourn."

Many Republican questions could only loosely be qualified as such. Lynn Westmoreland (Ga.) congratulated Prince for a "very good job," while Chris Shays (Conn.) credited him with a "perfect job."

"How many individuals under your protective service have been injured or killed?" asked Patrick McHenry (N.C.).

PRINCE: Zero.

McHENRY: Zero?

PRINCE: Zero, sir.

McHENRY: Zero individuals that Blackwater's protected have been killed in a Blackwater transport?

PRINCE: That's correct.

McHENRY: Zero?

PRINCE: Zero.

Democrats were careful not to even mention Prince's politics -- but California Republican Darrell Issa ($131,235 from defense interests) decided to take offense anyway. "Labeling some company as Republican-oriented because of family members is inappropriate, and I would hope that we not do it again," Issa complained.

"Well, the only one who's done it is you," Waxman pointed out, accurately.

Issa stammered and didn't complete his reply.

Though Prince read his opening statement with beads of sweat on his brow and upper lip, he quickly adapted to battle. When Danny Davis (D-Ill.) asked him to concede that Blackwater had killed innocent civilians, Prince replied: "No, sir. I disagree with that. . . . There could be ricochets. There are traffic accidents, yes. This is war."

As the hearing stretched through the lunch hour, the witness grew cockier. Paul Hodes (D-N.H.) said no more than "Thank you for being with us" before Prince shot back: "Glad I could come here and correct some facts."

Prince had evidently made enough corrections, for a member of his entourage caught the chairman's eye and made a "timeout" signal. The hearing thus adjourned, the Blackwater chief picked up the "MR. PRINCE" nameplate and, with a sly look, pocketed the souvenir.

109. It occurred to me
As I lay in bed last night thinking about the Blackwater testimony. Mr Prick said that all life is precious or something to that effect. He could not possibly believe this and I know it was a lie because he is in the business of war and killing. His passion is training people to use weapons and kill. So many of the war mongers want it both ways and the hypocrisy is mind boggling. * says he is for a culture of life and yet he is responsible for the deaths of thousands if not millions. I am not fooled by the charade of lies and deceit. It is simple. If you are in the business of war you are a liar if you say all life is precious. Rather, Mr. Prick has no respect for human life. He is the worst kind of person on earth, an evil killer.

I just recently started paying attention to this story.I saw him on T.V. yesterday and I've been reading up on Blackwater...it's all so surreal.

I wish the Bushbots and Republicans in general would put Country before Party and imagine how it feels to not agree with the President and his men,to feel compelled to speak and act on behalf of the Constitution and to know there are camps being built in America, dissenters are being arrested and jailed,Habeas Corpus is no longer and now,NOW... the Government has an army at the ready that is under no obligation to follow the rule of honor and integrity and could,if contracted, turn their weapons on American Citizens...

I cannot believe this has happened in America.

And won them legitimately. That person won every medal an enlistee could earn in the German Army of WWI. His name, Hitler of WWII fame. Did his medals mean he was a good person? No, just that he did his job while in the Military. Serving in the Military is good, but that does NOT mean bad men do not do it.

And while Hitler did NOT win every medal someone could earn, he won every medal AN ENLISTEE could be expected to win. There is a difference between those two statements and why I worded my comment the way I did. Did hitler win EVERY MEDAL a German soldier could win? NO, but he never was promoted above the rank of Corporal and as such was NEVER is a position to win any other medal then the one's he did.

Paging Dr. Orwell

By Josh Marshall
Everybody needs a trade association in DC, even in the private military contractors. Their outfit is the International Peace Operations Association. Their "mission is to promote high operational and ethical standards of firms active in the Peace and Stability Industry; to engage in a constructive dialogue with policy-makers about the growing and positive contribution of these firms to the enhancement of international peace, development, and human security; and to inform the concerned public about the activities and role of the industry."
