What my Persian in-law will tell me: "They voted to bomb my country."
Sorry to keep harping on this, but this is what she--and most of the country--THIS country--are going to see.

Someone, anyone, please explain this vote in a reassuring manner, if possible. Explain to me how the majority of Dems voted for what, to all intents and purposes, makes Iran out to be a terrorist nation and worthy of a military "solution."

And do keep IWR in mind--do you homestly think the rest of the country/world has forgotten that one?

Think like Joe Blow, who gets his news in 5 minute segments between yesterday's endless NFL armchair quarterbacking if you would.

2. Sasly, that might work. It's not like she isn't used to political upheaval.
She was born during the reign of the Shah.

Sigh...

3. Sorry, no reassurance from me.
Joe Blow will hear "we're keeping you safe, fight them there so we don't have to fight them here, etc etc". I don't now how to interpret this, spin this, see this, in any reassuring manner.

4. They are right.
This was sickening, a triumph of propaganda over reason, a triumph of short sighted political expedience over the good of the country and the world and against the will of the people.

I am thoroughly disgusted.

9. That shouldn't come as a surprise...
US policy has towards Iran has always been short-sighted, with the exception of, perhaps, Carter's handling of the Iran Hostage Crisis (which he actually did a very good job doing, all things considered). There's no reason to believe the situation will be any different this time around, considering most of idiots responsible for bungling up Iran in past were good buddies of Bush the elder.

However, it may very well be way too late to engage in a reasoned debate with the Iranian government. Under the direction of the mullahs, Iran has consistently acted against its own best interest, engaging in downright moronic policies, justified by the firm belief they are Allah's voice on Earth. It is one thing to accidentally step on your dick, but you gotta be nuts to just stand there and stomp on it like Iran does.

5. There is NO way to explain this vote in a reassuring manner
I can't help but feel that your in-law is correct: the Senate voted to bomb her country.

6. We here at DU and those in DC can spin it all they want, but if even I see it
that way, how can she see it any other?

I'm just sick about this--literally.

7. It was a non-binding resolution, the IWR was binding
Not that I'm happy about the way they voted.

say will be twisted later to justify killing.

Don't trust any answer. Only trust certain people. You will recognize reason when you read it.

There is so much tension combined with the moon that it isn't even worth reading the hate Iran words that are all over DU.

Keep asking. I want to know also. I have been physically sick over the idea that we would/will invade and destroy Iran.

There are way too many people who have no respect for humans.

This may be the most useless war ever fought if they proceed.

Neocons will never control the area from Pakistan to Israel.

The trail of death to attempt it will be a blight on mankind by a few, for a few.

8. They didn't authorize bombing, they're just cheering it on.
Congress doesn't need to be consulted for an 'emergency' strike after all.
