Human Rights Campaign statement on Ahmadinejad
Human Rights Campaign statement on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that there are no gay people in Iran

"Today's assertions by President Ahmadinejad that there are no homosexuals in Iran would be simply absurd were it not for the fact that international human rights watchers have long documented some of the most horrific acts of persecution and violence committed against gay people in Iran. These acts of terror have included incarcerations, beatings, and brutal executions. Ahmadinejad's denial that there are gay people in Iran shows the extent to which he devalues the lives of the many citizens his government has and continues to violate."

The Human Rights Campaign

33. And why does this matter NOW?
I've been reading the gay press since I first found out there was such a thing my freshman year in college twenty years ago. The human rights abuses occuring in Iran, Afganistan, Zimbabwe, Singapore and many other places have always been recurrent topics covered in the gay press but long ignored by the MSM and even the liberal press to a lesser extent. Rex Wockner in particular is famous for his dispatches from abroad. Let me let you folks in on a little secret: human rights abuses against gayfolk occurred in Iran long before Ahmadinejad. Khatami, the great reformer, defended his country's policy of executing gay people while speaking at Harvard almost exactly two years ago. Where was the outrage then from the gay community's newfound flag-bearers? What say you about your silence then? Excuses? I don't want to hear excuses. Here I sit listening to this nouveau-outrage coming from people who've ignored the issue completely in the twenty years I've been involved in the gay rights movement. I'm have trouble buying any of it now. Consequently, I just can't jump on the outrage bandwagon just because YOU are finally ready to address the issue. So I have a fairly rhetorical question: "Why now? Why Ahmadinejad?" I have my suspicions already.

Speaking only for THIS homosexual, this entire gays-in-Iran kerfuffle comes terribly late and suspiciously convenient. I'm not buying it. Bottom line: NO WAR IN IRAN!!! Let's settle that question and THEN I'd be THRILLED to talk about human rights abuses if you are as sincere as you say you are. You'll forgive me if I'm not waiting by the phone. Frankly, I'm very VERY disappointed in the Human Rights Campaign.

34. "suspiciously convenient"
You aren't actually suggesting they've joined the pro-war crowd because they rightfully condemned Ahmadinejad for his comments and actions re:gays, are you?

Advocacy groups often target current events of some magnitude to maximize the impact of thier commentaries. That seems like a more reasonable explanation, doesn't it?

39. What's the point? Honestly.
Why another post about Ahmadinejad and Iran? Don't you think there have been enough? Everyone here knows that you detest him. We've got that, but how important is this really. Yes, we all hate the persecution of gays, but after all, are friends the Saudis aren't too gay friendly either.

When is enough enough?
