2005-BUSH ON CRAIG: He's "A Goddamned Traitor" Told RNC To Recruit Someone To Run Against Him
Edited on Sat Sep-01-07 04:23 PM by kpete
DING! DING! DING!

Is This the real reason he’s being booted? The arrest and guilty plea are just the excuse. This also explains why the arrest was kept quiet until the day it was needed, when Gonzo resigned. And what shiny object has the media been following all week, rather than examine the meltdown at the DOJ?

DUG UP FROM 2005

..............

Bush is also angry with Craig, a conservative who joined with Democrats in a filibuster to defeat permanent renewal of the Patriot Act. As a meeting recently, Bush referred to Craig as “a goddamned traitor” and told the National Republican Senatorial Committee to start recruiting someone to run against the Idaho Senator in 2008.

Such anger against those who dare oppose him is typical for a President who all too often launches into obscene tirades when his policies are questioned. Bush, on many occasions, has called political opponents “traitors” and, in private, refers to Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter as a “lily-livered bastard.”

Craig, however, is unfazed by all this and says the Patriot Act “doesn’t do enough to protect the civil liberties of innocent Americans.”

They were waiting for the right thing to use and Craig handed it to them on a silver platter. The rest was easy from there.

I think that statement, if true, makes it clear that as soon as they saw the opportunity, they used it to catapult their desired outcome.

52. Craig
How hard would it be for Bush or Cheney to set this guy up? Minneapolis is probably the hub that serves Boise, and Craig probably went home every month or so. They find out which plane he's on, have an FBI Agent follow him to the popular men's room in the airport, and make sure that local law enforcement assigns one of their most attractive, young vice officers on the next scheduled visit. Not saying that that's what happened, but I don't think it's out the question in Bushworld.

10. It's typical of BushCo. Remember Trent Lott?
You could not find a Black man or woman, anywhere in his state, who are surprised at Trent's attitude. When they heard about his remarks at Strom's party, the comments included "Gee, surprise, surprise--not" and "Duuuuuuuh!!!!!"

But more than a few of them vote for the old bigot anyway, even though they wouldn't have the plastic-haired racist in their house, because they like just one thing about him--his ability to bring COLORBLIND jobs to his state. And he does do that. He's the King of Pork. And he knows how to bring home the bacon.

Bush "punished" Trent by refusing to accept his apology--hell, everyone else did, even BET. He was pushed from his Leader job--where he CONTESTED the White House, and demanded a say in the GOP agenda--and was replaced by CatKiller Frist, who really was a pussycat when it came to dealing with the White House--he just did whatever they told him to do.

Doesn't surprise me at all, frankly--Bush is a vindictive muthafucka.

Bushco operation, engineered to crowd out any discussion of Gonzales & the Justice Department he made a shambles of.

And now to find out that Craig wasn't just ANY old sacrificial lamb, but someone who had previously incurred the wrath of the Chimperor -- well, it just neatly goes *click*, doesn't it?

Thanks, kpete. Here's my k & r.

15. He blamed Clinton, of course (Hillary)
-- Pardon the source..

Larry Craig: Hillary Would Abuse Patriot Act

Newsmax | December 22 2005

Republican Sen. Larry Craig is citing Hillary Clinton as the reason he opposes renewing the Patriot Act in its current form, saying Mrs. Clinton is likely to abuse the security measure if she becomes president - unless additional safeguards are built in.

"There will come a day when there will not be a George W in the White House," Sen. Craig warned, after calling top conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh on Wednesday to explain his position. "And tragically enough, and I hope never, it could be a Hillary Clinton."

Craig wondered aloud: "Who will be her attorney general, and what might he or she do to your liberties and mine? There's the question."

The Idaho Republican told Limbaugh: "You know, I've been here a little while, and I remember Janet Reno, and I remember Waco and Ruby Ridge."

"And I fear the day that we get a president, not this president, who has a very liberal attorney general and sees the opportunity, to leap through the holes that are crafted in the Patriot Act, that could tread on our civil liberties."

Craig reminded that he voted for the initial version of the Patriot Act and intends to support it again.

"At the same time," he explained, "we see this as a once-in-a-two-or-three-year opportunity or four to make sure that it never gets misused."

19. Yeah, it makes more sense. Not only did the inner circle
find him a little too "constitutional," they needed something to take the heat off Gonzo. The timing was too perfect for it to be otherwise.

That being said, it's good he's gone. He was an enemy of the environment and powerful enough to block some pretty important legislation. Although only another fascist will be appointed in his place, it will be a fascist with considerably less power.

Pushing the Craig story was another example of the Bushies cutting off their noses to spite their faces. He was a powerful ally, and they're trading him for a powerless ally.

22. Here is Craig's letter as to why he couldn't support PATRIOT reauth.
"In the buildup to the Senate vote, my name has been thrown around quite a bit on the pages of the newspapers, because I made it known that I would not be supporting the conference report. Why not? While the bill does preserve important tools for law enforcement, it doesn't do enough to protect the civil liberties of innocent Americans."

"The conference report would allow the government to obtain library, medical and gun records and other sensitive personal information under Section 215 of the Patriot Act, without demonstrating specific reasons to believe that person is connected to a suspected terrorist or spy. Currently, federal agents can simply say those records are relevant to an authorized intelligence investigation."

"I am also concerned about the conference report's treatment of the use of National Security Letters (NSLs). NSLs are similar to a subpoena from a court. Federal agents can use them to gather certain types of sensitive information about a suspect, including business records. Someone who receives an NSL is placed under a gag order and cannot discuss the NSL with anyone except an attorney, and must report that contact to the FBI. Furthermore, if someone feels they have been unjustly served an NSL, their ability to challenge it in court is harshly limited by the law, and the conference report does not allow meaningful judicial review of the gag order"

More: http://craig.senate.gov/releases/ed121605a.cfm

He went on to lead the fillibuster with Russ Fiengold:

"In a crucial vote early Friday, the bill's Senate supporters were not able to get the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster by Sens. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., and Larry Craig, R-Idaho, and their allies. The final vote was 52-47."
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines05/1216-08.htm

I think THIS is why Craig is gone. It all makes sense now.

Great find, kpete!

Hell, I'm more interested in the statement about Arlen Specter. You know how we keep saying we need to confront our repug reps too? This would be a great email campaign to Senator Specter. Tell him that this is all the chimp thinks of him, and ask why he still covers for him or cowers down from him. Did Arlen know this when he took that plane ride with the chimp last month? I think if people were to play on Specter's ego and machismo, we could turn him against this administration here in his 'waning years in office'. Arlen, it's time to stand up to these guys. You know in your heart that they're wrong, and you're a Constitution lovin' kind of guy, aren't you? See what they *really* think of you? You're a "lilly livered bastard", Arlen... a "lilly livered bastard" in the eyes of the man you serve and bow to. These are words straight from George W Bush's lips, Arlen. You're a "lilly livered bastard".

How does that make you *feel*, Senator Specter?

45. Wow!
'As a meeting recently, Bush referred to Craig as “a goddamned traitor” and told the National Republican Senatorial Committee to start recruiting someone to run against the Idaho Senator in 2008.'

Yes, I've discovered that seems to be one of the basic rules of American politics: it is always OK for Republicans to replace a candidate in favour of someone more right-wing, but if the Dems ever try to replace a candidate with someone more liberal, that's the next thing to a Stalinist purge!

'Such anger against those who dare oppose him is typical for a President who all too often launches into obscene tirades when his policies are questioned. Bush, on many occasions, has called political opponents “traitors”'

What a lover of democracy. I bet he's calling a certain Mr. Gordon Brown a traitor right now!

Craig got caught tapping a guys foot and showing his hand under the stall after peeking in it at the cop. As creepy as this is, is this actually breaking a law? This has been bugging me. Now if he had been actually propositioning lets say underage men, then why didn't they catch him in the act? Seems like a good lawyer could get him off for this behavior alone.

I was listening to a rerun of Thom Hartmann on XM this morning and he said that Gonzo leaked the Craig arrest the day after he resigned to take the heat off himself. It makes sense that Justice would have been told of the arrest of a US Senator even though it had been kept secret otherwise.
