Ok, simple question for DU HTML guru's
How do I format text to fit in a certain width? I have this problem that when I post messages with pictures the text wraps to the width of the largest pic. I would like it always to wrap to a smaller, consistent width regardless of the total window width. What are the codes to do this?

Thanks in advance

1. You could try "pre" "/pre" tags. Replace quotes with brackets. n/t

2. Just put in hard line returns.

This sentence is a run on sentence and I didn't put any line returns in I just let it keep going as I typed until it got to the end of the screen.

This sentence is a run on sentence but I hit a line return as I typed
before it got to the end of the screen.

4. I am copying and pasting large blocks of text, so that isn't a realistic option for me n/t

9. If it's coming from Word (or a more-reasonable editor)...
If it's coming from Word (or a more-reasonable editor),
you can pretty easily convert "soft returns" into
"hard returns"; Word will definitey do that for you
as part of the export-to-text. Other editors can do
it using global search-and-replace.

5. I don't think you can get there from here
DU does not allow users to use direct HTML code (for very good reasons.) On a page that I design, I would div tags and apply various styles such as width and padding. You can't do that inputting on DU.

Best advice I can give: resize the pictures to a reasonable width. Most people nowadays have screens of at least 1024 pixels wide. Allowing for sidebars and the like, any picture wider than 500 pixels is probably too big to start with.

6. But I have seen other posts on DU with such formatting.
Unfortunately, resizing isn't much of an option either as I generally don't have the time to download the pics, resize them and then upload. There was a post months ago where someone explained how to do it, unfortunately I failed to bookmark it.

7. Probably by inserting carriage returns into the text
Manually inserting line breaks will work too, but you have already said that it is not feasable with how you cut and paste.

8. You can resize Images
when you up-load them to Imageshack.

Check the resize Image box, then click the arrow for the Image size you need.

10. Does DU allow < table > tags these days?
Edited on Wed Aug-29-07 08:56 AM by Tesha
They used to be allowed, but didn't always work well.
They'd provide another option for controlling the
width of the various elements in a posting.

12. No
Get to a text window (just hit Reply to this post) and click the HTML lookup table link. At the bottom is a line which reads: Sorry, tables are not allowed

The is a test of --div style="width: 200px"--.

"How do I format text to fit in a certain width? I have this problem that when I post messages with pictures the text wraps to the width of the largest pic. I would like it always to wrap to a smaller, consistent width regardless of the total window width. What are the codes to do this?

OK, there's your answer. Put the div tag (without the dashes) inside SQUARE BRACKETS at the head of the text you want to format. Use an inline style declaration to set the text width however you want it. You can specify the width in pixels (px), ems (em), percentages of the total block width (%), and so on. End the block with /div inside square brackets.
