There are a few real world reasons I can think of:

Either they were waiting for the new cycle to go to sleep on this, hoping the "resignation" wouldn't be seen as an admission of guild during questioning. Hoping that congress would look as though it is 'kicking a dead horse' or 'playing politics.'

Or

Things are going down and whether the recent wave of resignations were directed to try to deflect blame or rats fleeing a sinking ship, the administration is in serious trouble.

That is my preference as well.

I think Gonzalez is one of the bricks on the road to impeachment.
