ID Security Breach? New Bill Would Let You Know Where It Happened
News 10, California
Identity theft is so common these days, just about everyone knows someone who has been a victim. Assemblyman Dave Jones, D-Sacramento, introduced new legislation Monday morning that he says would better protect your personal information.
Under Assembly Bill 779, if a security breach occurs, customers would be sent a notice that will tell them where it happened. Jones says that will help consumers decide where to shop.
"So what our bill does is very simply provide that in those notices you get to be told where the breach occurred so you can decide that if ... it's happening at a store like the one behind me, you're not going to shop there anymore," Jones said.
The bill comes on the heels of a new law that goes into affect July 1, 2008. Senate Bill 802 prohibits any business from printing more than the last five digits of a debit account number or the expiration date on any copies of a receipt.
