theres some real a-holes on this board now, i guess now they are pissing on a dead person.

im guessing its because she was a gay-rights advocate? after the snickers thing its quite evident that the gay haters have grown in numbers significantly.

i dunno im just trying to figure out why they are being such insensitive pricks. gdam keyboard hiders feel real secure hiding behind the screen i bet face to face they'd keep this crap to themselves anyway.

49. I just commented that I read a whole page of "ignored" replying to "message deleted."
I just got here. When I see something like that, I pat myself on the back for ignoring the right person. Still, it's disconcerting to see discourse degenerate. I hate myself when I do it. The future of Internet forums will probably allow more video. It might be a little harder to hide behind the keyboard, as it were.

3. I think it is sad
yeah she had some real issues, but you can tell she was usually miserable and didn't havea very good life. before she ever got a chance to have a decent life and do something good with he rmoney, her son died...probably the only person who ever treated her with respect..and then she died too. I think it's sad no matter what her faults were. None of us are perfect.

4. Keyboard warriors always feel that it's okay to be a bully.
The vitriol about this does take my breath away, though. I was the one who posted about it in the lounge and some stuff is just heart stopping.

I said it before and I will say it again. Celebrating someone's death diminishes the person doing so. Someplace, someone is grieving that person and deserves some good vibes about their pain.

8. You're right.
I don't watch TV or read tabloids so I don't know much about her. But it always seemed that she did the best she could with her life. And she had a good heart. She stood up for us.

There is a huge amount of homophobia here at DU, and as long as they don't use any direct slurs they can get away with posting huge amounts of hateful shit without it getting deleted.

DU is definitely a democratic site, but it's not very progressive. To many really reactionary, mean, bigoted people are at home here.

All we can do is put up a fight, and do our best to defend progressive values.

13. It's part of the collective madness, or neurosis, that has gripped America
I see it every day in the high school I work in.
It is truly disturbing to watch.

A complete lack of empathy or humanity.
Instead, what Bertrand Russell identified as
the basest form of humanity.

An ancient philosopher observed that the fall
of a civilization could be predicted by what its
citizens considered "entertainment."

Any else see it?

To turn the tragic life of another into
a series of jokes and puns is simply sick.
We are a sick society.

driven into hiding from the world.

From my personal perspective,

The filthy people who spoke about her like that... Not only were they speaking ill of the dead, of the recently dead... But the fact that they would CHOOSE TO SPEND THEIR TIME in that way is maybe even scarier and sadder.

I have beat my friggin head against the wall for the last 3 days to get people to spend a TINY AMOUNT OF TIME on a guy, Lt. Watada who has DEVOTED THE REST OF HIS LIFE, thrown away everything he has worked for, in order to stop the war in Iraq, because of his CONSCIENCE!

Where is the conscience of the people who spew shit like that? Where? How many people here claim to care abot stopping the war. NOT EVEN 500 Views! I can't get 500 views out of what 90,000 members of DU.

87. NBC news spent more time on Anna Nicole tonight than they did on Molly Ivins
Keith also spent a lot of time on this tonight on Countdown - all he did for Molly was mention she had died.

I think it's find to castigate the media for over hyping this story, but it's awfully mean spirited to attack Ms. Smith. I never paid much attention to her (though with all the coverage she received, it was hard not to know something about her.) and I can't say I ever heard she did anything that hurt the masses (unlike Milton Friedman mentioned in this thread). From what Keith said tonight, it sounds like she had a very troubled life and 39 is far too young to die and there is a baby girl left who will never know her mother. KO also mentioned that she was a very kind person.

If you want to attack the media, have at it. I'll join you. But have some respect for the people on the board who were fans of Anna Nicole - maybe there are even some people here who knew her and are grieving for a friend.

26. i am sorry i do not see the snicker commercial as gay bashing. i dont.
i see it as the opposite. bashing the stupidity of straight male. and i thought it in the face stupidity. i expressed my opinion on one fo the first threads. and left it at that. there is no gay hating because i do not see the commercial as gay bashing. i didnt suggest that anyone should not be offended by it, either. i know that in and of itself is offensive. i can respect that there are people.... gay and straight that see it as bashing gays. i can also understand that there are people..... gay and straight that think it is opposite of bashing gays. i embrace each observation and allow each to uniquely own their perspective

that being said

i also see no reason for smith to be getting so much news time on her death. i think it is indicative of our poor media and where we are as a culture. i wasnt impressed with her in life. i also believe all should be respected in death. and the sadness of the event. but that has NOTHING to do with the gay issue. none what so ever. and it is a far stretch for those that dont agree with the coverage to be accused as gay haters.

This is a huge tragedy, and her death is the culmination of a very tragic life. It's awful, and it does make me sad.

Having said that, it's not much of a surprise that her life led her to this point. I hope that she's in a much happier place, and I truly hope that she is with her son and can find peace. More peace than she seemed to have during her last years of her life.

...so mean here? What happened? I see so many threads of people defending their right to not have compassion, to insult people, to diss people, to use offensive terms, etc. I see people telling others to just lighten up when something hurts them. I see real crap sometimes.

ANS was only 39. She was exploited, just lost a son and leaves behind a motherless baby. My heart has room for unlimited compassion.

I don't understand this place. Maybe I am naive. I didn't know so many would be so vehement about their rights to not be nice.

say they have more important things we should be talking about. Come on! This is a discussion board and hopefully most people here don't spend most of their lives posting. Yes, there are many important issues, but you're not really doing much when you are posting here. If you don't like a thread just don't open it or better yet they can just hide it.

Do you think it's better to do that? I'm contemplating it because I haven't been having much fun on DU lately and I used to really enjoy it here. I know some people never ignore because they like to not miss out on anything, along with other reasons. What do you think?

64. Being a democrat doesn't necessarily make one a kind person.
I've cut back the time I spend at DU. Mean spirited, nasty, snarky comments that add nothing to the discussion or debate. People being mean just to be mean. The anonymity of the internet doesn't help.

Instead of striving for excellence, we cut others down to feel good about ourselves. (The impersonal you/we, of course!) It's a disturbing symptom of our very sick society.

Some days I put the whole damned internet on ignore & those are great days!

He was right about a lot of things. If you take his ideas to far you end up with something like China.
Powerful corporate interests will take over and you lose your democracy.

The neocons misuse him. Every time they want to do something corrupt they hide behind him. Deregulation and small government just means that the tax payer is getting screwed.

I just started posting here a few days ago. I came as a refugee from another leftist site.

DU is tons better and has far less hate speech - I haven't heard the first thing about nuking the entire South or raping Ann Coulter and there are posts about female politicans here that don't mention their looks or refer to them in derogatory sexual terms. Even so, yeah, I think I may have to check out the ignore feature soon.

77. She was a cultural icon
Edited on Thu Feb-08-07 09:46 PM by Penndems
While not a fan of hers, I remember the first time I saw Anna Nicole Smith: In the Guess fashion print ads. She certainly got everyone's attention, that's for darn sure!

Who didn't want to go to their local department store and pay an outrageous amount of money for Guess apparel, simply because of the way Anna Nicole Smith looked in a pair of their jeans and one of their shirts (including yours truly)? Here was this stunningly beautiful, full-figured Marilyn Monroe lookalike, looking at the camera with this "come-hither" glance, in a pair of pants that looked painted on. She lent sex appeal to the Guess line of clothing.

Anna Nicole Smith's life may have been tumultuous and lived in the public eye, but she didn't seem to want to hurt anyone, least of all animals (she was a spokesperson for PETA). She was entertaining, she was funny, she lived on her own terms. When her son predeceased her, it seemed as if the life just drained out of Anna. The one person she truly loved was gone.

Rest in peace, Vicky Lynn.

113. I'm going to lock this.
The administrators of Democratic Underground are working to provide a place where progressives can share ideas and debate in an atmosphere of mutual respect. Despite our best efforts, some of our members often stray from this ideal and cheapen the quality of discourse for everyone else. Unfortunately, it is simply impossible to write a comprehensive set of rules forbidding every type of antisocial behavior. The fact that the rules do not forbid a certain type of post does not automatically make an uncivil post appropriate, nor does it imply that the administrators approve of disrespectful behavior. Every member of this community has a responsibility to participate in a respectful manner, and to help foster an atmosphere of thoughtful discussion. In this regard, we strongly advise that our members exercise a little common decency, rather than trying to parse the message board rules to figure out what type of antisocial behavior is not forbidden.

Do not post personal attacks or engage in name-calling against other individual members of this discussion board. Even very mild personal attacks are forbidden.

Do not hurl insults at other individual members of this message board. Do not tell someone, "shut up," "screw you," "fuck off," "in your face," or some other insult.

Do not call another member of this message board a liar, and do not call another member's post a lie. You are, of course, permitted to point out when a post is untrue or factually incorrect.

Do not publicly accuse another member of this message board of being a disruptor, conservative, Republican, FReeper, or troll, or do not otherwise imply they are not welcome on Democratic Underground. If you think someone is a disruptor, click the "Alert" link below their post to let the moderators know.

Do not draw negative attention to the fact that someone is new, has a low post count, or recently became a member of Democratic Underground. Do not insinuate that because someone is new, they are a troll or disruptor.

Do not accuse entire groups of people on Democratic Underground of being conservative disruptors, or post messages which spread this type of suspicion. Do not post topics that arouse suspicion against new members, or members with low post counts.

Do not say that you are hitting the alert link to report another member. You are permitted to tell someone that you are adding them to your ignore list, provided that you actually do so.

Do not "stalk" another member from one discussion thread to another. Do not follow someone into another thread to try to continue a disagreement you had elsewhere. Do not talk negatively about an individual in a thread where they are not participating. Do not post messages with the purpose of "calling out" another member or picking a fight with another member. Do not use your signature line to draw negative attention to another member of the board.

You are permitted to post polite behavioral corrections to other members of the message board, in direct response to specific instances of incivility, provided that your comments are narrowly focused on the behavior. But you are not permitted to make broad statements about another person's behavior in general, and you are not permitted to post repeated reminders about another person's mistakes.

best,
wakemeupwhenitsover
