'retreat mining', got all pissed off & funky but there are indications that in the absence of a safer, former 'long wall' mine that that was what he was doing...which he had been advised not to do in that mine

he would certainly seem the kind of guy that would lobby the devil himself for a tax break, or the scuttling of legislation designed to make mining safer,

heard he was opposed to locater beacons, and other forms of safety upgrades...how the hell can you be opposed to locater beacons :wtf: you'd have to be one self righteous piece of work imo

In the wake of Crandall Canyon Mine co-owner Robert Murray's media appearances at the mine, I'd like to point out that there is a word for people like him.
People who think that possession of wealth makes what they say true and what they do right. People who believe corporations, if they kill, maim and poison, should do so with impunity because they make a profit. People who would gladly trade a habitable planet for more money. People who panic at the thought that a dollar might be spent for the common good, but don't mind funding perpetual war on credit. People who petulantly spread blame while deflecting any accountability for their own actions.
Yes, there is a word for people like him. They're called Republicans.

31. Amen. From the OFFICIAL Mormon newspaper: "Were union miners kicked out of the rescue effort?"

HUNTINGTON, Emery County — Miners who quickly responded to help rescue the six trapped men inside the Crandall Canyon Mine say they were turned away and believe it was because they're members of the coal miners union.
"The union rescue teams were relieved and asked to stay on standby," Dave Maggio, with the United Mine Workers of America District 22 in Price, told the Deseret Morning News on Thursday.

It's an accusation the mine's owner denies, calling them rumors being started by the coal miners union to make him look bad.

"There were seven rescue teams that we sent away," Bob Murray, president of Murray Energy Corp., said in an interview Thursday. "It had nothing to do with them being union mine workers."

Essentially they're saying that the mine collapse was caused by a mine collapse.

48. Mountain bump:
Mountain bump
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

'Mountain bump' or coal mine bump is used within the mining industry to describe a specific type of seismic event occurring in a mine. It is commonly the explosive collapse of a wall or support pillar consisting of the original mine material. <1> These pillars are left in place in what is known as room and pillar mining, where an original narrow passage is dug and then the passage is substantially widened as ore is removed, creating open rooms with support pillars left in place. As the ore is extracted, the pressure on the pillars increases until, in the case of a mountain bump, it becomes too much and the pillar explodes under this extreme pressure. In retreat mining the pillars themselves are removed as the miners retreat towards the mine entrance, hopefully allowing an orderly collapse of the mine. <2>

As of this entry, August 13th 2007, it is believed by many geologists that the current disaster at the Crandall Canyon Mine in Emery County, Utah was caused by retreat mining and a subsequent mountain bump, although the mine's owner stridently denies this and asserts the collapse was caused by an earthquake.

61. This whole thing is tragic but what makes it even worse is that
they are down there risking their lives for coal which we should not be burning anyhow. What a mess.

105. I think he knew the mine would come down from the beginning
and didn't want to waste money drilling large enough holes to send in a rescue team. He is drilling the tiny air holes for the cameras to save money and prolong his BS and feed the media which are complicit in this. He has turned the tragedy into making himself seem like a hero. I wonder how long people will buy it.

106. i think that is completely reasonable to conclude, "We will drill a hole...
...a tiny 2" hole that will be able to refresh the miners with oxygen, food, water, maybe some toothpaste, a Playboy mag or two..." :wtf: forget his ass for a moment, if you will, he has got the pull his head out of MY ASS!! i agree, it's like he's been buying time while saving money

93. In China when the toy manufacturer screwed up he hung himself
...perhaps in a fascist state like the U.S. has become favoring business owner rights over worker safety, CEOs need to have a greater sense of responsibility and honor. The way Murry has responded to this event suggests he is hiding something, like he knew the mine was not a safe place, but sent his workers in anyway.

Edited on Thu Aug-16-07 11:32 PM by bridgit
they're just afraid to say anything, that was Murray's impetus from the beginning: to throw the monkey onto something/anything else but his shabby-ass retreat mining operation i.e. "your elect bills are going to go up", "coal is the cheapest source of sustainable energy", "i am the world's greatest mine owner", "i never perform risky operations in my mines", "i've had coal dust on my face"...on & fucking on

i mean that shit went on forEVER, jumping down the throats of any & all reporter that dared to question hm

why do it get the impression he's a real-time shit-head to live & deal with

fuck this!! it is time to re-examine corporate entities and the ways in which they conduct business in america

Edited on Thu Aug-16-07 11:52 PM by bridgit
have all gone into the machinery, little or cursory funding for the advancements in safety equip

all these guys are dragged kicking & screaming over everything thing from a living wage, tax breaks, special legislation, OSHA-esque "restrictions" on their bottom-line and they scream back

"This is going to cost YOU! There'll be higher costs for EVERYTHING!! Jobs will be lost!! You're all going to be driven into the poor farm!! It's going to cost you and that's a promise!!"

WRONG!

that is a threat, and both it and their business practices must be stopped

too many people think 'assault & battery' is one fluid event; assault comes first, then you get your ass kicked

these craven capitalist dogs are committing assaults upon this nation, and they must be made aware that there is a price for them to pay as well
