So, did you survive Harrysteria Potter?
My wife a two kids went to see HP movie #5 last evening and then acquired HP book #7 when it came out at 12:01 am (I think it was a packaged deal through Rainy Day Books here in the Kansas City area). My family had been looking forward to this event for some time (my wife said "two years" for her--I don't know where she came up with that). When they got home (sometime between 12 and 1 am) my wife and daughter began reading the book and continued into the wee hours of the morning. My daughter was still reading when I left for work at 6:30 this morning!

1. Even went party hopping before going to pick up the book
We tried to end run the lines by picking up the book at a local superstore (Meijer) thinking they would be able to handle the crush better. But one look at their line and we fled back to the Barnes and Noble. It actually only took us twenty minutes. They turned out to be quite organized.

2. My 14-year old went to see the movie last night. He walked in and said
"Harry Potter sucked" and that was it.

4. hmmm... any particular reason why?
I went with a group of 13-15 year olds and every one of them thought it was the best HP film so far...

17. I just asked and he said it didn't make sense. He said they'd start a
plot line and then switch to something else without explanation. He actually said "It was like counting to 10 without 2, 4, 6, or 8."

For my kid (lately) that's a pretty deep descrition.

9. My wife said she was a little disappointed in the movie...
She claimed it differed slightly from the book. She said the movie gave less attention to what she felt were significant events in the book. But she did say that overall she liked it.

She keeps rattling off these names and their role in the series, and whether or not they're "good" or "evil." I simple nod my head and smile.

3. My book is on the way
I pre-ordered it. Sadly, I am about to take the bar exam next week so there will be no HP for me until Wednesday. But, I can stare longingly at it and try to avoid any spoilers on the internets.

My hubby and I are both sitting for the bar (what a hideous experience; even worse than 3 years of law school) but we did take a study break and went to see the movie when it opened. It was OK; book #5 is very complex and I felt the film cut too much out of the story.

We're anxiously awaiting book #7, but won't be able to touch it until next week when we're released from the 7th Circle of Hell. Sigh.

Peace,

RV

8. I think you'll have an easier time passing the bar than avoiding Potter info for four days!
Best of luck with both!

14. Thanks!
I haven't freaked out until right now. Plus I've forgotten everything I ever learned about the common law of contracts. EEEK!

Thanks for the well-wishes.

Peace,

RV

19. Relax. It's all a logical historic progression- it's not like memorizing Pi to ten thousand places.
Just refresh on your most basic foundation principles, and you'll be surprised
how easily the answers pop into your head when you see the specific questions.

You'll do just fine.

16. Best of luck on passing the bar.
I agree, the HP sites have tightened security on their end, but other places -- who knows?

5. We got ours from Amazon this morning...
My wife is reading it right now and I am waiting patiently for her to finish. Guess we're Tag-team potter fans.

6. I'm afraid I've totally missed the boat
I haven't finished #4 yet. I've read all the spoilers in the Lounge and that doesn't bother me because once I start reading the books again I'll have forgotten all that. My chronic narrative amnesia is the reason why I can never remember the punchlines of jokes which also means I can laugh at the same joke after many retellings.

7. Here is a pic of the crowd at one bookstore that you all missed

A crowd at a book store. That still takes some getting used to for me.

13. My first thought at the bookstore last night:
"Why couldn't this phenomenon have happened when I was 19 years old and single, rather than a married father in his 40s??"

15. I am Potter impaired
Edited on Sat Jul-21-07 12:56 PM by melody
I've never read HP, I've never seen an HP movie, I have no desire to. I have a basic knowledge of a couple
of the characters and I know Alan Rickman is in there somewhere. I feel a little like a blindfolded
gay man at a nudie bar.

18. My son and his girlfriend were at our local Barnes and Nobles last night so she could
get the book. I asked how he was going to get home and he told me he'd find a broom!

20. We got two copies last night
One for the kid and myself. I'm a slow reader. Words on a page are like sleeping pills for me. A few chapters and I'm out.

There was a nice crowd at midnight and the lines went pretty swiftly. Little kids and big kids in costume. The high schoolers (behind me in line) were trying their best to be cool by making fun of Star Wars geeks but they weren't fooling anybody.
