Hawaii Cold Spell (Temps dip into the 50's)
http://www.khnl.com/Global/story.asp?S=6035185

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Spring is nearly upon us, but a chill is sweeping the state.

With temperatures dipping into the 50's in some neighborhoods people are talking about the cold spell.

Beth Hillyer is live in Kalihi with more on the winter weather.

The place is packed at Boulevard Saimen in Kalihi.

Tiffany Robertson enjoys her bowl, "Oh yeah, saimen is the best when it's cold like this."

The manager likes the cold weather since customers are looking for a way to warm up.

"Saimen, it's warm when it's cold, it's the best thing you can eat, comfort food."

Others found comfort not in food but in a cup of hot coco.

2. "Winter weather" my ass!
My thermonetor says 12 (-8 with wind-chill.) I'd kill to temperatures to be in the 50's right now.

5. Realitively speaking I wish I was living back in Oahu also But I do remember a few mornings where
I had to turn on the OVEN so as to warm up the house since heaters are not standard in Hawaiian homes.

8. never thought of that one
I grew up out there, and it could get darn cold in the mornings. Most of our windows were just screens with louvers that had aluminum mechanisms frozen to the open position.

Try waking up with your house in the 50's. It's not fun. Hawaii people don't own flannel pj's.

3. Damn Junk science...
Man, I know at least one thing; Cold temps in Hawaii are NOT the result of unusual weather patterns brought on by global warming. Seriously! Don't believe me? Well, you just wait. In a couple of weeks, I will produce some meteorological scientist who will prove me right! Pay no attention to his large wad of bills in his pocket (about 10 grand) and the whiff of petroleum. All scientists smell like that. hehehehe. Just like where I live. It always got down to negative 5 after being 60 in december.
Nothing to see here, folks, move along.

4. We just returned from Hawaii on the 20th
we were mainly on Kauaii, but hopped over to Honolulu for three days to see some friends. The day we arrived, Jan. 9th, there was a winter weather advisory for the big island with snow reported in the mountains. I'm not sure how unusual this is, but the weather man seemed to have to explain what a winter weather advisory was, including icy roads. The weather we had was very nice, high 70's every day. But quite a few people were talking about the cold conditions on the other island. Scarey stuff.

We ran into some people at LAX who had vacationed in New Mexico and almost froze to death until they were able to go out and buy all new clothes including coats. It's nuts.

9. Mauna Kea would be the tallest mountain in the world if you measured from the sea floor
where it starts it's rise taller than the Himalaya's. 13,796 feet (4,205 m)From base it is 33,474 feet 10,203m In Hawaiian, mauna kea means "white mountain", a reference to the fact that it is regularly snow- or frost-capped during the northern hemisphere winter.

And snow is not unusual at all up there!

6. Strange. They spell "saimin" both incorrectly and correctly in the same article.
Reading the incorrect spelling, I'm going "whazzat?" I guess Anglicized Cantonese is flexible.

11. It's fine now
they'll enjoy. Tell them not to forget to check out the whales while here, a killer experience...

We just had a big weather system pass through, it blew like hell for about a week, and then the other night it DID GET COLD!

I was amazed, I've been what's considered COLD here in the winter before, but I had to wear a sweater and grab my wife's sweatshirt and stick my legs through the armholes to warm up my feet. My teeth were actually chattering when I hit the bed.

Luckily, our two year old is like a nice warm little dog in the bed :)

Didn't know it had gotten down to 50 degrees, wow, that's freaky, and like someone said, we have no furnaces here, either.

I bet I'm getting a WHOLE LOT of Sympathy from people in the states right now, sorry :)
