Poll question: Which do you like better, The Daily Show or The Colbert Report?
Edited on Mon Jun-25-07 11:20 PM by Up2Late
O.K., The Colbert Report has been on for a while, so it's time to ask, which do you like better? The Daily Show or The Colbert Report?

funny, well written uniquely different programs.

...liking The Daily Show more than The Colbert Report, mostly because Colbert keeps coming out way ahead of Jon Stewart in some recent Pop-culture polls, like the recent Time Magazine "100 Most Influential People" reader's Poll.

In that poll, Stephen Colbert was ranked #2 and Jon Stewart ranked #12?

Number 12?!? Jon should have ranked higher than 12th or at least be closer to Stephen in a poll like that, don't you think? I mean, am I missing something here or are Colbert's fans just rabid in there support of him?

Don't get me wrong, I love both shows, I just like The Daily Show a little bit better.

You 'know' as well as I (and most of us do) what the *real* statistics are. Talk to your friends, talk to your enemies, talk to your lawyer, and the checkout gal/guy where you shop.....if you want 'validation'.

Peace,

13. I've watched TDS almost every night since the Kilborn days
I watched Stewart before it was cool. That's right, you heard me.

But there's something about Colbert. Few would go to that Washington dinner and just give everyone there the finger. It didn't change the world, it hasn't stopped anything, but it was a hell of a show.

Hat tip to Steve Carell though. Whoever came up with Steven vs. Stephen should be crowned King for eternity.

i've been watching tds since day one as well- i even had early trepidation about jon being able to fill craig kilborn's magnificent shoes...but now it's "craig who...?"

btw- the first pairing of stephen colbert and steve carrell came several years back, during a short-lived summer replacement variety series on ABC- the dana carvey show. they had some GREAT bits

I didn't even like Stewart at first. I thought Craig was the man, Stewart just couldn't hack it, then stopped watching for a while. I got back into it during the lead-up to war thanks to the good things I heard on lib boards and was like holy shit, this is the guy I discounted? Rawk on!

43. I did the same thing, now I really wish I had some of those old 1999 and 2000 shows on tape.
I did recently post a few old Craig Killborn Daily Show and Daily Show w/Jon Stewart pieces that I found at the end of old video tapes to my old account at You_Tube, but they finally just deleted the whole account, and now it looks like Viacom is getting tough with DailyMotion now too.

It's really kind of amazing how much better he got, he really did kinda suck at first, but I think that was because he was just trying to "replace" Craig (do the same Craig Kilborn shtick) but once he began to take control of the show and make it his own, it (and he) got much better.

I think it was good timing though, because once the "Indecision 2000 coverage started ramping up, it really started getting good. I'm a little worried about 2009 though, because once GWBush and his slim-ball friends are gone, I really doubt it will be as funny. They may have to revert to the "less political/more pop-culture" show it was during the Clinton years, and I wonder if Jon will want to stay for that.

45. oh, I don't think so
There will still be dicks in politics after Bush and crew go. There's more than enough room for sharp, biting political comedy. The only question is whether Stewart will eventually get bored or if he'll still have the fire in his veins for decades to come.

14. They are like my children. I love them the same and appreciate
their different stellar qualitites. Jon is the more "mainstream" of the two. He is honestly engaging in the interviews and conversations. Stephen is the rapier, getting clueless guests to hoist themselves on their own petards...

The interviews that Jon Stewart gives are very interesting, while Colbert's are entertaining battle of wits! I like both equally. They are so different and yet complimentary. Choosing who is better is impossible for me...

16. Both the same
I think of them as one show, really - the Daily Show leads into the Colbert Report so nicely, I think of it as a one hour show that I never miss - it's actually the only thing I watch on tv, now that Bill Maher is on break. I do watch CSPAN now and again, but I love both TDS and TCR AND Jon and Stephen, too.

17. I only have basic cable (free with apartment)
so I don't watch much--usually just the youtubed highlights.

From what I have seen, Stewart is more trenchant and Colbert has more moments of LOL hilarity. As news, Stewart wins, as comedy, Colbert.

I can already see how he will transition the character beyond simple oreilly parody after the bush administration has run the course. It's a brilliant character concept and he's going to be able to run with it for decades.

27. Colbert by a nose
TDS' correspondent bench still has yet to recover fully from losing the Murderers' Row of the early part of the decade (Colbert, Carell, Walls, DeGeneres).

Also, TCR tends to have more interesting guests (more authors and people with political backgrounds), who can also be pumped for more comedy due to Colbert's schtick. For some reason, TDS' guest roster is still full of dull-witted celebrities with movies to plug, and Jon simply doesn't engage with them as much as the political guests.

"Soooo, you're in that big movie, there, m'friend. I thought that... being in... Half Baked would... boost my... movie career, as it turns out, ehhhhh, not so much!"

29. I Like Them Both, But Voted For John
I think Colbert is brilliant, but I don't always like the format of the show. I especially hate "The Word", which is rarely funny. I usually enjoy Threat Down. But Colbert's at his best when he's just talking, not doing a "bit".

On the other hand, I usually enjoy the Daily Show's "bits"; I especially LOVE the Indian guy (I can't remember his name) and the British Guy. And John just does a great job in general.

The only beef I have with both shows is the guest interview. I rarely enjoy those (exception: John's recent sit-down with Sci-Fi writer Greg Bear was fascinating), and wish the time could be used for more "news".

30. stupid question
Both shows have some similarities but a lot of differences. They're both best of class. One may have a personal preference for one or the other, the same way one might like vanilla ice cream over chocolate, but they are both very, very good. And this is coming from someone who originally had doubts as to whether Colbert could successfully pull off a right wing parody guy without making it become horribly grating and forced. The show came out of the gate at a dead run, stumbled a little, found footing, and is giving the Daily Show a run for the money. You cannot ask for a better entertainment value than that.

He makes me laugh quite a bit more than Jon and his crew lately... As an earlier poster said, The Daily Show does seem too "phoned in" too much of the time. Aasif Mandvi and John Hodgman are great, though.

I like the Colber Report better. I like that TDS has a lot more clips from Bush, Senators, Congressman, etc but I like the way Colbert satirizes the right wing. Better know a district, Tip of the hat wag of the finger, the word, the interviews at the end- all are hilarious.

40. Both are genius
Stewart has a way with parsing the daily headlines for us...there are none better than Jon. Yet, Colbert is all about characterization. Between the "real" Stephen Colbert, and the TV personality, it's a so subtle change of facial expression, attitude and wardrobe. I like Colbert for the same reasons I think Steve Carell is cinematic genius, or for that matter, the king of characterization, Tom Hanks (yes, some of his movies have been icky, but others were great).

Especially when some guests don't 'play along' and the whole premise collapses - also I think of the 'real' questions he could be asking these guests., like when he had Delay on. Less and less of the guests are 'cooperating'
