We were so close, there was no room.......
Lay down lay down, let it all down
Let your white birds smile up at the
Ones who stand and frown
Lay down lay down, let it all down
Let your white birds smile up at the
Ones who stand and frown

We were so close, there was no room
We bled inside each others wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace

So raise the candles high cause if you
Don't we could stay black against the night
Oh raise them higher again and if you
Do we could stay dry against the rain

We were so close, there was no room
We bled inside each others wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace
Some came to sing, some came to pray
Some came to keep the dark away

So raise the candles high
Cause if you don't we could stay
Black against the sky
Oh oh raise them higher again
And if you do we could stay dry against the rain

1. Wow.
I remember this song. And I never knew the lyrics until now, even though I liked it.

Check out the comments. Democratic Underground is mentioned.

Thanks for helping me catch up on the life I've been missing.

2. I first heard the song in 10th grade
In IDH we got to choose what we wanted to study, and we chose the Vietnam war. We always were obsessed with the late 60s and the 70s for some reason. I wonder how many other people who graduated in 1999 strongly associate the Steve Miller Band's The Joker, Jimi Hendrix, and Lynryd Skynyrd (did I spell that right?) with high school?

One day our teachers played protest songs for us, and this was one of them. And we actually were lying down on the floor.

I haven't talked to anyone who was in that class since graduation, but I often wonder how that semester spent on Vietnam has affected their opinions on Bush and Iraq and all that. We ended the semester with a trip to D.C., and more than a few of us cried at the Wall.
