CURRENT TV Countdown w/ KEITH OLBERMANN - 31 Oct. 2011: Keith interviews Democracy Now reporter Ryan Devereaux on the state of the Occupy Wall Street Liberty Park protesters.

Some people have been treated for hypothermia and sent to the hospital this weekend after the generators were removed from the park by the NYFD. There is speculation that the NYPD has been sending transient, homeless and drug-addicted people to the park, instead of getting them help they need.

1. Moral trial by fire. Embrace.
Its happening around the capitol here too:
http://www.theolympian.com/2011/10/28/1856222/occupy-olympia-location-is-a-haven.html

I saw it when I went there. The right answer for the true homeless is for us to become involved in charity. We need to embrace that call to help, as it truly makes us stronger.

But I also got the sense when I was poking around there of something else, something new. There were homeless people who would ask for money, and when you said no, they were almost fond, appreciative. But when you gave it, they became angry, almost assaultive. They tried to freak you out. This is weird because they are normally downcast when you have nothing, and grateful when you give them something. To be honest, I had the strange sense I was almost dealing with actors.

But my moral compass has not swayed away from helping the poor and downtrodden, and will not be. The time of manipulation and illusion is coming to an end.

Peace
NiR

Just a thought, maybe they're there to protest, not sponge.

7. If this happened on more than one or two occasions
I think you should trust your instincts. And oh yeah, try getting some footage of strange goings on while you're at it.

9. I have known pan handlers to get very aggressive when someone
pulls their wallet out. Suddenly one dollar is not enough and they get threatening. Someone who hasn't given them money yet is still a "prospect" hence the different approach. Addicts can be very manipulative.

12. These guys just got crazy.
Not trying to get more money. But then again mental illness makes a lot of people homeless, and being homeless makes it worse, so it could just be that. I just get a little suspicious, when I hear about things like the supposed anti-semites at these rallies, so I look at these events with a more wary eye...

5. If the Occupy movement can get one city to go to court to
enforce time, place and manner restrictions on Occupy's First Amendment political speech rights, then they can win and show the conflict between Citizens' United and prior decisions on free speech and the idea that time, place and manner of ordinary citizens' political speech can be regulated, but the time, place and manner of corporate free speech cannot.

If Congress cannot regulate the political speech of corporations, then local governments should not be able to regulate the political speech of the Occupiers.

8. This is how cynical, sick and dehumanized the system has become.
Using society's most helpless souls as ammunition like some sort of medieval castle catapulting dead and diseased corpses at their enemies. If ever there was an indication of fucked up things are this is a new all time low.
