3. I don't like "slippery slope" arguments
"slippery slope" is often used to try to stop good things, it's not a great argument to buy into, as it can be used to argue against almost anything.

However, I do think that insurance programs should be what they claim to be. I can't imagine any life insurance company being told they didn't have to pay a beneficiary because "they didn't really need it."

5. But we know, in this particular case,
the Republicans and their Democratic Party allies want to end social security. We know it, they have made it clear. So, like Thom suggests, this is a ploy.
